Authentic ramen Smile May 14, 2011

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

We read about reviews before we stepped in this restaurant. It was a compat Jap restaurant, hence very Jap feel. There were local as well as Japanese families dinning.

We tried their limited offer fatty pork ramen with pork bone soup and high in carbohydrate ramen set.

Very first thing we did was spoonful of soup to taste, wow, really good and fragrance, you could taste it was boiling for long hours. The soup won our first love!tongue

I have a bite of fatty pork, it wasn't my type of meat though. It was too soft to my taste. Whereas my set was having the normal char siew and 溫泉蛋, they were good too. The egg was cooked just right, very rich egg yoke taste. Half way of our ramen and soup, we felt full almost, it was tough for me to finish the small bowl of rice at the end. If you need carbo rich food, this set definitely is for you.

Probably the soup base was too rich, it could fill you up. Having said that we were very happy and satisfy with the meal.

After we foot our bill, they passed us a card with a stamp, tempting us to go back. I would like to if I have a urge of authentic Jap ramen.

Steam fish head in Hongkong Style Smile May 02, 2013

We have had steam fish head many times in the Chinatown complex. This round, we patronised Seng Kee because they claimed that they were the pioneer stall, as usual, they are busy during dinner time.

We just ordered steam fish head in Hong Kong style and stir fry kang kong. I especially liked the fried lard pieces served with the steam fish, I always ate them all! Frankly, the steam fish head is sufficient for 3-4 people to share and we have only 2, therefore, we add a veggie dish to complete the meal.

We would only order Hong Kong style as the taste was just right with the balance of soy sauce and oil. We did tried bean sauce though, it wasn’t our taste, it was too salty to our like.

I would say this is an economical meal with standard, fish is freshly steamed and veggie is frying once it has ordered, they are not pre-cook food. It is a value for money casual meal, sure will come back whenever I want to eat fish.

Herbal chicken soup Smile Dec 14, 2011

Categories : Hawker Centre | Chinese Soup

Browsing for idea of lunch at Tanjong Pagar hawker centre at quiet Sunday, there aren’t many stalls open, choices are limited. This soup stall looks new to me, probably they have open for few months only. The stall owner looks friendly as he smiles to me when I place my order. I just want to have something soupy with rice that day. They don’t serve many types of soup on Sunday, whereas they serve more choices on weekdays. Which means their food is under control, they won’t prepare or cook too many beforehand. In terms of freshness, it has some warranty though.

I have herbal chicken soup with rice. It is wrapped with foil and plastic sheet as the container. Once the wrapper is open, steaming hot soup and ingredients are within. The soup was clear brown, hardly could trace oil as the owner has removed the chicken skin. Taste wise, I like it without msg and light, though it has a strong liquorice taste, it overpowered the rest of the ingredients. If liquorice could be less, it is a perfect bowl of soup for me. I could taste it has taken long hours to boil as chicken meat is really tender. Chicken leg was the main ingredient plus some herbs.

I think I will return to try some other soups. It seems this little stall serves good old flame soups with detailed and consideration.

The best Chendol Snow Ice Smile Dec 09, 2011
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese Desserts | Desserts and Cakes

Ever since I tried snow ice in Hongkong and Taipei, I fell in love with it. It became one of my favourite desserts. Whenever I could afford the calorie, I would have it. I knew this place serving tradition sweet soups and snow ice for long. Wherever it serves snow ice, it catches my attention. This was another Sunday biking, I reached Chinatown at early afternoon, it was around 2+pm, I have yet to have my lunch. I decided to have my dessert first then lunch. This place is popular and always packed with patrons. I managed to find a seat next to my bike, browse their menu, they serve few types of snow ice only, from the picture most of them looked too much colouring to me, my last option was chendol snow ice as ice was white in colour, it really looked like real ice!

As you can see the picture, they stack high the snow ice, ingredients are the usual chendol, there are few pieces of transparent cube, mild sweet to taste, I guess this is transparent agar agar, quite interesting though. Syrup is putting by myself, I like this idea as I can control the sweetness myself.

Here comes the pure white snow ice, it has rich coconut flavour, smooth and melt in your mouth. The richness is like using the coconut milk to freeze then shave to snow ice, no addition of water. Though it is really rich coconut taste but I love it simply. I saw some patrons having mango snow ice, this time the colour is too rich to me, it is too artificial and too much colouring. I was happy with chendol snow ice.

Poor~red ruby

Poor~red ruby

We have our annual internal audit that day. After the first section audit in the morning, we decided to have an exotic Asia lunch for our British auditor from head office. Thai is a good choice.

We have ordered red, green curry, basil with mincemeat, stir fry vegetable and red ruby as our dessert. We all liked the red and green curry so much, they tasted really good and authentic, we scooped up most of the gravy into our rice! Basil with mincemeat was a bit wet, though taste wise, it was all right, not so spicy or salty.

The British man has a cup of coffee to finish off his meal. My colleague and I have red ruby instead. When serve, it was to our disappointment, red ruby’s colour faded, not even pinkish in colour, taste really bland, hardly got the coconut flavour!
Overall service was good.
