stick to the duck only. OK May 03, 2013

ordered a double combo with roast duck, roast meat and a piece of tau kwa. That cost me $6, kopitiam card will give a 10% discount, so it works out to be $5.40. I was quite disappointed with the roasted meat as it was not flavourful at all and so was the gravy. The duck was still good but it seems to hv lost a bit of oompph of the usual johnson duck but was still acceptable.

Restaurant by the Park not Beach OK May 03, 2013

Categories : American | Bars/Lounges | Restaurant | Live Sports Broadcast | Pasta | Seafood | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches

tip: nearest carpark is carpark D. From the carpark you can see the side of the pup with neon lights but not too obvious i must say, most people who drive along Pasir Ris road will not see it as its behind the bicycle kiosk which is closed at night. This joint replaces the former JuzEat Restaurant. Anyway i asked the waiter about the story behind the restaurant/pub name, was told the bosses used to hang out as a group of 5 and love drinking thus decided to call it 5 drunken rabbits. Anyway it has both indoor aircon and alfresco dining area, the LCD tv screening bpl are for the outdoor dining folks. I actually prefer the outdoor seating ambiance and setting, with the candlelight and ratten furniture. The branding by the way is more clearly seen at the toilet area with wall pictures rabbit themed. Anyway for food we ordered seafood squid ink linguine $19.80, salmon fillet with char grill chicken $34.80 and Belgian waffle $7.80 fr dessert. Total bill was $73.45. Was a little disappointed with the squid ink pasta as its was a little dry and felt the pasta was a little overcooked. The seafood did not taste fresh also, but not to the extend that it was bad though smile. The salmon and chicken on the other hand is slightly better with mashed potato provided as sides. The Belgian wafer serving was a little small as well, definitely not enough to please. But i would say the nice setting does makes up for it. If only it was a bit nearer to the beach smile. Anyway i think the service staff all needs a bit of training, they felt a little raw...more training will definitely help.

Hybrid BKT OK May 02, 2013

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Coffeeshop | Bak Kut Teh

Chance upon this place while on route to pek kio hawker centre. The area, there is at least 3 BKT stall now, the other being ng ah sio and founder bkt along rangoon road. Was hoping heng heng serve the herbal style soup instead of pepper. Once seated, the staff will bring on the chilli padi, cutlery, you tiao and giam cai. The giam cai is definitely worth ordering, goes well with the rice. Me and my friend order a claypot of bak kut each and also an additional pig trotter leg, emphasizing we want lean meat instead smile. Not a big tea fan but we had kungfu tea (tie guan yin), rare to have such offering now. The soup served contains 2 pork rib type "long gu", the soup felt like a hybrid, in between pepperish and herbal. Did not really like this "in between" taste though. The soup did not have other additions as well. But still eating Bak Kut Teh in a run down coffeeshop still has its charms, in this case, the company beats the quality of food. It seems they are also famous for steam fish but it cost up to $30 per fish serving.

Quality > Service OK Apr 29, 2013

Categories : Australian / New Zealand | Steaks and Grills

Came here with a groupon voucher to try the food here. One order was for black pepper steak and the other was for ribs and chicken. Both orders came with a soup of the day and a soda drink. We walked right into the restaurant and had to grab the attention of the staff at the bar to attend to us. We were then ushered to a seat of our chicken (they hv both open table seating, and seating with mid level backing types) and was told she will be back to take our orders, she never did. I had to catch another waitering staff who was also aware that we were waiting to hv our orders taken but did not do anything as well. Now to the food, the soup of the day was chicken and mushroom, not the cream based type, it tasted a little salty, didn't like the oil on it and quantity served was little, soup stains were even spotted on the bowl when served. The black pepper steak was served cut up and not the entire slice but it was good, unlike the service level. Same goes to the chicken and ribs, the chicken was nice to bite and did not feel dry at all. Likewise the ribs were well grilled and flavored. My only gripe is not much sauce is provided for both dishes. Also the fries could have done a lot better, sad to say it did not compliment the meat well. As you can tell, very mixed reactions from me with the food quality impressing but not the entire dining experience though. This joint has got to improve especially carrying the Australia outback theme, hope it can buck up on the finer things of dining and i'll be back soon.

That's the shorten version of the message imprinted on the disposable cup. Anyway I think its gonna be the 1st time i ended up talking more about the interior than the food for this joint. Typical fast food concept, you order and pay for your food at the counter, collect your drinks, help yrself to chilli/ketchup/serviettes then find your own seat. U will be issued with a beeper device and it will light up and vibrate once your order is ready for collection. Two main sitting area with a kids corner. There is an interesting toy story swap concept here whereby you bring along a pre-loved toy and swap it here. but of course prior to this you need to buy a set meal and top up $2 for a swap card. The interior deco is really worth mentioning, from the army looking Harley Davidson, ceiling fan, wall lights with bee covers to artificial carpet seats and backing, tables made from recycled pallets to comfy looking sofa seats by the window, this entire place exuberates class in design. They also have magazines under use pallet table but a pity i think they do not check for rubbish (the seat i was at had bottle caps and serviettes inside).

Now for the food, was quite impressed with the french fries which was served together with my tartar chicken special in a army mess thing. i ended up finishing half of the fries before even i started on the burger. The burger confirmed i'm more of a meat person coz the mocked chicken just couldn't leave a taste memory with me, it tasted bland. Actually i struggled abit to finish it. The tangerine crush i had is also disappointing. But i guess the ambiance (it was super quiet, only 2 tables filled) and the nice deco made up for it. Will try omakase next time instead.
