Wantan Noodle FTW Smile May 09, 2013
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Food Court | Roasted Meat

Was hunting around in Food Opera for late breakfast and it did not took me long several diners ordered the wantan noodle and the char siew looks really good (with it slightly charred yet not to fatty). Went with the popular choice, costing $5 with 3 soup wantan. I must say the noodle is average but the char siew is really top notched, tasting as good as it seems. Was also pretty pleased that the wantan was the biggertham usual ones, more like 水饺 actually.

2 stall front Smile May 06, 2013

this ipoh hor fun specialist actually uses up to 2 stall but one is used more for food preparation, that's how popular the food is to afford renting additional stall just for food preparation. the same stretch probably have 3 stalls all selling variation of noodles with amigo and weng kee being the popular choices. i ordered the chicken chop hor fun and a bowl of dumpling (shui jiao) soup. I was delighted to eat the hor fun, its not ust the sauce that is nice, even the chicken chop taste freshly deep fried and not those that has been pre prepared way ahead. Mixed with their sambal chilli the kway teow alone is itself a point worth mentioning, using the smaller kway teow type, it does not taste overcooked nor will be clump/lump together after a while, a sign of skilfully prepared kway teow. The shui jiao soup is average though. will want to try the ipoh hor fun next. hor fun was $3.50 and the dumpling soup $3

At least its different Smile May 03, 2013

Tried their white glutinuous rice with hay bee hium (50cents) sometime back, i must say its very impressive. The hay bee hium is also quite unique in that its a mixture of dry shrimp and pork floss like ingredient. Bitesize also makes it easy to finish with one mouthful. It could even be better if they added some peanuts to it as well. Next time i will probably ask the owner what this item is called. By the way their ang ku kueh also smaller than normal but it does not look as oily as others.

Very nice toilet Smile Apr 29, 2013

can't help but to mention that in my review title. It was my first visit to BDV, knowing that it is slightly upmarket in price, only came here because it was farewell for a colleague. 1st impression of this supposedly Michelin star restaurant (suppose so seeing the Michelin mascot at the cashier) was the place was decorated to be small and cosy but not necessary comfortable with the small chairs and table. Lots of wine bottles seen around the place exemplifies the love of wine by the french. The tables are mainly good for 4 pax maximum so not recommended for big group gathering. I ordered the set lunch with foie gras mushroom as appetizer, ribeye as lunch and pot au chocolate as dessert. Can't quite remember the ingredients but the appetizer comprises of foie gras served together with mushroom and pistachio nuts, quite appetizing i must say. My rib came lonely with no garnish except for some Béarnaise which is a sauce made of clarified butter emulsified in egg yolks, white wine vinegar and flavored with herbs. I extremely like how well prepared the steak it was, lightly charred on the outside yet retaining the succulent juices in the inside with good degree of pink. Also like this portion of ribeye which has good bits of fats in between. Dessert was normal though and nothing much to shout about. We also ordered some mussels marinier but were quite disappointed with the mussels small in size and tasting a little too soft for liking, kind of unusual for mussels actually. But the sauce is actually quite nice.

The toilet by the way is nicely decorated with wallpaper and wine bottles, not to be missed during a visit here. our bill came up to $188 for 4 pax

Tiger's Den Smile Apr 25, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen

Came here for set lunch. first impression is people might not recall this as the famous menya musashi because the signage actually says 虎洞instead. Anyway we arrived here at 1150am so it was not crowded at all. ordered their set lunch which comprises of the black noodle soup ramen and 1 side dish which i chose octopus. One tip i would offer for this ramen is to allow the spring onions to submerge in the soup for a while before eating it, i felt it made a difference, as it was a set meal, only 1 piece of char siew was offered. the soup has this slimy, thicker than normal taste to it and its pretty good. The side dish is also of decent quantity. Overall the set meal is sufficient to fill the hunger. i would love to try the dry ramen next time.
