No POSB ATM Smile Apr 08, 2013

Had dinner here some time back, they had a buy 2 get 1 free promotion at $14 with porridge going at $2. IMO, certainly around the same standard as eminent or G7 sinma. The porridge combined well with the thick sauce. Only gripe is the waiting time is abit long during dinner hours. Dragoncity actually uses up to 2 stall-front at this hawker centre. They also serve the chicken essence version of frog leg which i think i will give it a try next time. Mentioned in my title, there is no posb atm around this area, so better come with more cash, there is an ocbc atm downstairs though.

Its been a while since i've tried any innovative mutton soup, usually its the same style. Not till i tried out Ivy's version. You get mu er, tau kee, lamb tendons and herbal soup all in one. And they do not overly put too much ginger slices. Costing $8.50 for a set, it was more than enough to fill up for one meal, i especially like that it does not hv the foul mutton smell, in fact i finished the whole bowl of soup. Certainly a place to come to for mutton soup herbal style.

Salt Baked Style Smile Apr 04, 2013

Ga-Hock is the kind of coffeeshop that you wouldn't know its popular from the outside. Though some may find it a little too run down as the environment at the back is under canvas overhead shelter near a big drain. Parking is also now Gantry type for the small available space in front and be warned its not going to come cheap. Alternatively several diners will park at the warehouse office near the bag, i heard the per entry fee is $3.

Their signature dish here is definitely the salt baked crab but be prepared to wait up to 30min. If you are coming during weekends, its best to pre-order and reserve them. The crab sizes are pretty large. Salt baked method of preparation will cost $50/kg with others instant cook type at $45/kg. The crab dish is served simple with no sauce or whatever, just with a bit of parsley as decoration. But one can immediately taste the slightly salty taste that has infused into the meat. Its a refreshing kind of taste and for once eating crab is not all about gluey sauce or spicy black pepper. Kind of like cold crab style but more flavorful and to the salty side. Its an instant hit with me, thumbs-up. the hot-plate toufu we ordered taste average though. Anyway Ga-hock is also famous for its curry fish head. My total bill was crab $60, toufu $9, rice $1.

Newton hawker centre is surprisingly a popular place for breakfast for several drivers, apparent from how filled the carpark is in the morning. For breakfast, usually its only the front row stalls that are opened. Chose this stall after seeing it does not not have any queue and i can sit just beside the stall and wait to be served. Ordered the handmade meatball noodle. Always like such meatballs if they are crunchy and crispy, i was not disappointed. At least it did not taste like it was left over since last night, they probably fried it only this morning. Also 6 balls were given. I also like that the fact that the dry noodle sauce mix is not too dry, so it keeps your noodles semi wet. i dun like those where very little sauce is given and sometimes yr noodles will clogged up. The soup however was very bland and i rather do without. Not an alcohol fan but maybe i shd try the xo version next time.

Newly opened this week, Saveur sets up its 2nd stall after Purvis Street. Taking up half of the area left by the previous tenant Old Town Coffee, this outlet styling seems to differ a little than the one at Bugis. Gone were the white walls and replaced with more classier wood and glass styling. Table top selection is also done to match the wall design. They also have longer bench types of seating for 8pax. Thumbs-up for the see thru to the kitchen where you can to see the gourmet chefs go about preparing the food.

Worth mentioning is the nice poster deco near the entrance showing the signature duck mascot and also messages about Christianity. Other than my usual order of duck confit $10.90 (standard is maintained similar to Purvis one, thank god), i had opportunity to also sample garden salad $4.90 which is delightfully appetizing, Salmon Confit $9.90 which melts in your mouth and nicely presented with shredded green apple as sides and also the Saveur pasta $4.90 which is tossed with chilli oil, japanese konbu, sakura ebi and minced pork. Certainly a joy to know a quality joint with mains at sub $10 in a prime area like Orchard. Saveur will certainly see me returning to them for regular visits.
