Well worth the $4.25 Smile Jun 03, 2013

Categories : Hainanese | Restaurant | Chicken Rice

Cost of 1 person portion for takeaway is $4.25 ($4 + gst). What you get is the white broiled chicken, some achar, white rice and funnily a meatball. As i'm always in this neighborhood for my weekly games, i walked all the way from spans jom clubhouse out to this BKT branch which is around 5min fast walk, but it was well worth it. Packed in a customized BTK plastic takeaway box, the dish is also labelled with its time of preparation and advisory of when to consume it by (nice one, hardly see others following suit). I was lucky to be given the chicken wing set, i must say i was delighted by its non fattiness yet well cooked and juicy chicken flesh. The accompany soy sauce was a tad too salty though but it still goes well with the chicken but a little overkill for the rice. The rice was also very fragrant. Chilli sauce was packed in sachet style . Anyway for take away, you go straight to the LHS unit, often perceived as the kitchen/preparation area and order at the cashier there.

Decided to try out the flag ship stall of Madam Kwan's after hearing rave reviews about this place which originates from KL. The restaurant is pretty big, able to house at least 200 diners at one go. At the entrance you get to see posters about Mdm Kwan's news and its history. Apparently it started out as Sakura Restaurant along Jln Imbi which was famous for their nasi lemak and curry assam fish head. Sakura was later rebranded to Mdm Kwan's.

The interior deco is done up in modern contemporary and clean lines design. The long drinks and dessert bar and cashier separates the entrance to the kitchen. Tables are oriented in different fashion and not just plain and uniformed straight lines. Cutlery used were bigger than the usual ones at home and thumbs up for that, makes it easier to eat. Lighting wise, each seat has its focused light at the centre of table, the soft lighting does make the restaurant cosy despite its hard wooden/plastic chairs.

Anyway Madam Kwan was on site, mainly helping to usher guest to their tables. She was dressed in her signature look of khaki round hat, specs and sporting a mole on the left. She was very soft spoken when i say hi to her and merely thank me for coming by. Wanted to talk to her more but i could tell she is busy with the incoming guests so i left her to work.

Back to the food, me and my friends ordered Nasi Bojari ($18.90, Madam's tri-colured rice with assam prawns, beef rendang and deep fried chicken drumstick, the beef rendang is very good 4/5) Otak Otak ($15.90 - spicy fish paste grilled in banana leaf, very nice feels quality fish mix inside 5/5), Banana Fritters with Ice Cream ($8.90 - a hot and cold combination, with the fried pisang crispy on the crust yet with the soft banana inside 4/5) and Bubur Chacha ($5.90 - plenty of sweet potato, yam, tapioca and sago cokked in thick coconut milk 4/5). By the way ice water is charged at $1 per glass. The condiments provided are a trio of spicy stuff, sambal chilli 4/5, chilli sauce 3/5 and chilli padi (no rating required , standard item mah)

Overall a fantantic eat, also see other interesting dishes ordered at adjacent table for e.g. malaysian satay 40grams each, black KL Hokkien Mee, and the curry chicken of course.

Freshly Made Waffles Smile May 22, 2013

Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

You make your order at the counter and find your own seat in this small open concept cafe outlet of around 30 seater. Had a chance to try the waffle with ice cream which retails at $13.80. It includes one wet topping (caramel or chocolate). Waffle is made on the spot and its quite thick, served on a transparent plate, not sure if its disposable type though. Had the 2 scoops of ice cream, blueberry which is pink in color and chocolate. I chose the caramel sauce instead which is a good choice. I like the chocolate one a lot and i must say its nice to eat it with freshly made waffles.

Mango Pie Cake Smile May 20, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Bakery | Desserts and Cakes

Its been a while since i came back to this cake shop as it was far from my current workplace. Bought a mango pie to go, never tried this before, i think its a new item. Delighted with the cold cooling mango slices on top of the crust, its also coated with probably a layer of sugar. The crust is also above average and feels solid and does not break easily. i think i taste cheese in the crust as well. At $6.75, its not the cheapest cake you can find but great taste, fine quality and nice presentation made up for it.

Mee Sua and Fish Maw Soup FTW Smile May 20, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant

Was there for a 5 cse wedding lunch. 1st impression was bad as the host ushered me to the wrong weddign reception actually, even after i quoted the name correctly and he insisted this section is the correct olace but i could not see anyone familiar at all, turned out he has ushered me to the wrong place. Back to the food

Crispy crab meat cigar roll with crisp-fried tiger prawn in wasabi mayo and fresh garden green
-> This was supposed to be the appetizer but couldn't quite agree. Nevertheless the tiger prawn is nice and not too oily while couldn't taste much of the crab meat with the stick cigar. 3/5

Broth of Preserved Fish maw with freshly peeled crab meat and egg white
-> above average, one of the better shark fin's replacement i've tasted with lots of different ingredients. 5/5

Crispy cutlet stuffed with prawn mousse coated with almond flakes
-> the almond flakes were a nice touch but the stuff prawn mousse doesn't taste fresh and almost covered the chicken taste entirely. 2/5

Braised mee sua in consomme, infused with hua tiao wine and topped with homemade meat patty
-> top notched, the mee sua was super smooth and the consomme gravy is just perfect, with texture almost resembling that of egg yolk. 5/5

chilled cream of japanese tapioca with coconut ice cream
-> very unique dish with its colors surprising you, purple based tapioca but it complements the nicely cut slice of coconut ice cream 4/5
