Guava Sour Plum Smile Aug 21, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre | Juices

Not shown on menu, my recommendation is to get the $2 guava juice with sour plum. While most places offer you the sugar cane version, i actually find guava a better option and healthy too. And they are genrous with the sour plum givem, 4 in totali counted. The same stall also sells agar agar, yakult based drinks and cut fruits. Competition is tough here but auntie remembers me well due to our weekly visits for late night dinner after games at the nearby ccab.

Its not herbal but pepper OK Aug 14, 2013

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Restaurant | Bak Kut Teh

Have always wanted to try this bak kut teh joint after seeing it always buzzling with people. There are 2 units for this joint along the shop huse, one is aircon setting while the other is not, prices wise they are the same. I always had the impression that this place serves the herbal version instead of the peppery one but i was wrong, they serve the pepper version as well. Ordered premium loin ribs which has more meat and also lean, braised pig trotters, groundnuts, kai lan and one you tiao. Wet tissue are at 20 cents each, also add 7% gst on top of your bill. I wouldn't say i'm entirely satisfied with this meal, maybe i had too much expectation, most of the dishes taste normal to me and i could not understand the reason behind the crowd. The soup is darker than most pepper version but it did not impress me enough.

But it does still hv the buzz of a old coffee house with option of drinking kungfu tea though i hardly see people doing it as most are younger working crowds diners.

New Joint by JP Pepperdine Smile Aug 14, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Restaurant | Korean BBQ

Came by this new SAFRA clubhouse to recce for some food place when i chance upon this new Korean BBQ concept by JP pepperdine (the same folks behing jack's place, brewbaker etc). Its smacked right between Hoshigaoga and Astons at the 1st level, enter the glass door beside new zealand ice cream. The 1st impression of the place was pretty good, spacious, nice deco, several chimneys like exhaust seen, lcd tvs playing kpop. There were 4 tables eating bbq food but fortunately the place is well exhausted so you do not get overwhelmed by smoke. The stove used is an inclined one whereby excess oil from bbqing the food will be drained away, nice thought actually. The staff places customers orders via small android tablets as well.

Wanted to try their bbq set lunch at $12.80++ but its applicable to minimum 2 pax per set so i settled for the individual set lunch instead. No bbq option for this but i spotted something i like - kimchi pork belly stew with rice. Though not a fan of kimchi but i do like kimchi flavored soup. The set lunch is applicable from 11am - 230pm. It also comes with free buffet of kimchi and korean side dishes. Just a small selection i must say compared to what most other korean bbq restaurants offer. But i do like the carrot slices, lotus root, lady finger and fresh green lettuce. Was quite disappointed by the small bowl of stew that was served but fortunately the taste made up for it. In it you find mixed vegetables, toufu and the main ingredient pork belly. The sour soup base certainly ensures that i finish my bowl of rice with it! Its not too bad actually eating the rice with the kimchi soup and having the korean sides dishes as accompanying dishes.

My total bill was $10.50, including the 10% safra card discount. 10% svc charge and 7% GST are inclusive as well.

If i have to gripe, it would be about not serving complimentary ice water and maybe to have more sociable staff who will bother to check if its your 1st visit and if you would require any recommendations etc.

Folks that read my review should really thank me as I will share with u the ultimate newbie tip to this YTH stall. It will definitely save u alot of time knowing this tip. The stall only opens for business around 11pm. It's couple in their 40s at work here. They were notorious for being fierce by the way. So here comes the tip, buddy system required. Once the stall lights are switched on, get one partner to queue at the LHS of the stall first while the other go get the food. The guy owner processed the orders based on the LHS queue and not whoever finished selecting a bowl of ingredients. You can opt to leave yr bowl of uncooked ingredients on the counter itself or its shelf but the queue still follows that of LHS. Vegetables is standard kang kong here. When it's your turn you just hv to tell the guy owner whether u want your ingredients done in soup or dry. Go soup definitely ftw. Also add that you want vege and anchovies else you will get nothing but plain soup. The noodles or behoon has to be ordered with the lady owner, only these 2 choices in dry or soup. After which u proceed to stand behind the table in front of the stall where many trays are placed. Auntie will send your order to that table where u also collect yr chopsticks and sprinkle pepper as desired. That's where you also pay auntie the money. Do tell her beforehand if u need empty bowls or anything. Key is not to get in her way or she will get grumpy.

Now about the food, I ordered one dry beehoon yellow mee mixed, it comes with some crunchy bits like that of fried wantan skin. My ingredients were served on a big metal bowl. My ingredients included cuttle fish, sio bak, pork belly, big intestines, small intestines, fried tau kee, lady finger, ngoh hiong, yu jiao, seaweed chicken, green chilli etc. I took many ingredients so plus the noodle adds up to $17. Anchovies given were generous amount that makes the soup nice. I felt it was an average eat, losing out to the one at lucky plaza. But the queue itself is a sign most ppl like it. But overall a fun experience I must say.

Generous Chicken Serving Smile Aug 07, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hakka | Coffeeshop | Kids-Friendly

within the same coffeeshop, there is also a chicken rice stall. i was pleasantly surprised this day when i chose to packet $4 worth of the ampang ytf and a packet of roast chicken rice. From my picture attached, i'm sure one would agree with me the quantity of chicken given is super generous. Although its a little dry and the rice is averagely fragrant, you can never eny that for a mere $3, you probably can't find an amount offered for any other chicken rice stall. Maybe uncle tio 4D last night hahaha
