Singapore has so many fine dining restaurants (7 out of the latest Miele Guide's Top 20 restaurants in Asia) and so many celebrity chef outlets. Most of these are extremely expensive; so it's great that Jamie Oliver's latest entry in Vivocity is much more accessible at about $30-$40 per person.

What I like most is that the cooking and service standards aim to be fine-dining, but without the price and the pretentiousness. I love the about 30-foot-long open kitchen where you can watch the chef walk up and down and "encourage" his cooks. Like watching Hell's Kitchen.

The food is overall very solid and very good; although some dishes like the Crispy Squid I guess we are used to a more strongly seasoned with salt and pepper, etc.

Jamie's Italian is located in vivocity 1st floor along that stretch of restaurants facing Sentosa Island. Non halal.

Each of Keisuke Takeda's ramen restaurants focuses on a different broth type. As the name suggests, this outlet specializes in Tonkotsu Ramen.

The regular Tonkotsu ramen is sublime. Porky, tasty broth with nice noodles and well cooked soft boiled egg, which is absolutely let down by the tough and dry cha shu. The spicy black is the same ramen with some chili, burnt garlic and other add-ons that, in my opinion, pushes the sodium content into overload territory.

You also get free flow bean sprouts and hard boiled (unflavored) eggs.

Highly recommended although not perhaps on a rainy day as it's an outdoor walk from the MRT station to Orchid hotel.

Given all the glowing reviews here on hgw and everywhere else on the net, I visited DeBurg with sky high expectations, and sadly those expectations have certainly not been met.

The taste profile, chosen ingredients and the seasoning on the burgers are impeccable, spot on, and utterly delicious. However, the patties were overcooked (rendering them dry) and the burger buns were also dry. The worst offenders were the sides: cold fries and tater tots that had obviously been fried 10-20 minutes prior to serving, and borderling inedible salad absolutely drenched in balsamic vinegar.

Add to that the 30-60min wait, difficulty in getting here if you don't drive (and difficulty in finding parking if you do), which makes me wonder what the hype is about.

Ryoshi Sushi Ikeikemaru has perhapss a bit of an identity crisis. It's a kaitenzushi restaurant, and yet there's hardly any fish on the conveyor belt. It seems that most of the sushi is made to order once people order off the iPad menu.

The fish selection at any one time is a little limited, but what's there is fresh and nice. The rice ball is nicely portioned (i.e. small) but not packed tight enough and hence dropped apart too easily.

Eating sushi in Singapore can give quite a headache. Cheap places aren't generally good, and good places are extremely pricey. So we're always on the lookout for good, reasonably priced sushi - and Tomi Sushi seems to fit the bill perfectly!

Our favorite set is the Nigiri Sakura set, for which SGD 28 buys you eight pieces of nigiri sushi, tamagoyaki, chawanmushi, salad, fish-miso soup, fried chicken and some fruits. Throw in the complimentary green tea and you've got a solid amount of food for not too much money.

Definitely recommended.
