Kopi Kopi Smile Mar 23, 2011

Okay, so we think all drink stalls are just the same old drink stall. Who's to tell one from another? Aren't they all the same?

Well, that's what i thought too... till one morning, i went to the Bedok 85 food market to have my breakfast and to my horror, the queue at this stall was like a deja vu of the Hello Kitty craze.

I couldn't understand how a drink stall could command such demand. I sat nearby and what i noticed, was that most of the people in queue actually ordered coffee!

I went back another day - earlier this time because i had an agenda - to join the queue for my morning cuppa.

I know i sound like another typical kiasu Singaporean. But who's to say, my kiasu-ness could possibly be a blessing in disguise this time.

Finally got to my turn and ordered a kopi. The cup that my coffee was served in was a small teacup, like those traditional ones you see at Ya Kun.

I could smell the aroma of the coffee even before taking my first sip. And being the java-obsessed girl i am, i could immediately tell that this coffee shop lives up to its name. The flavor of the coffee was rich and thick, complemented by the aromatic fragrance - it made for a great perk-me-up for the day!

Best I Have Tasted Smile Mar 23, 2011

If you love chwee kway, you must definitely try this at some point in your life.

They have the best chwee kway ever! Before i first tried it, i heard that i was really good. So the other day, i ordered some to da bao for breakfast.

Even after i reached home about an hour later, the chwee kway still looked in top-form! I began by first trying it without the chai po, just to do a taste test of how good it really is. And to my surprise, eating it alone was already good enough. I could have finished it all without the chai po. For some reason, it tasted so so so good.

I had to control myself before i finished it all, so that i could try it with the chai po this time. What i love about the chai po is that it wasn't too oily, which is apparently the case in many places. This one seemed healthier was surely pleasure without the guilt.

Back to the chwee kway and the chai po taste test. The combination of both made the entire meal ten times better. But better in its own unique way. So whether i ate it without the chai po or with it, it would still taste yummy and delicious.

The texture was great, the taste was great and even the auntie at the stall was so nice. Made my day!! lol

Friendly BBQ Catering Service Smile Mar 23, 2011

Categories : BBQ | Kids-Friendly

I've been ordering my BBQ food items from BBQ House for quite some time now. I live in a condominium, so i have barbecues very often.

You can actually look at their menu on their website and you'll see that they have a whole range of bbq selections. From the usual chicken wings, mid-joint wings, drumlets, sausages, otah, satay, stingray, corn on the cob, sambal sotong, prawns, chicken fillet, baked potato, and the list goes on.

The food i've been ordering so far are very well-marinated and taste really good. Even their already cooked food items like fried rice, noodles and desserts are well done too.

The prices are also quite reasonable, based on comparisons with other bbq caterers in SIngapore.

The only issue i have with them, is that on certain occasions i find that the meat portions on the satay sticks are rather stingy. Looks rather pathetic even. But i guess they make up for it by giving free satay gravy, which many other bbq caterers don't offer.

To end this off on a good note, the staff i've talked to over the phone are very friendly. I have tried making changes to my orders and even cancelled orders over the phone before, and they were really nice about it. Probably why i keep returning to patronize them. tongue

Great For Meeting Friends Smile Mar 23, 2011

Categories : Malay | Coffeeshop

I stay really near this Malay food corner and what I like best about Alfiah Restaurant is that it remains opened when every other food place nearby is closed.

It has also long been a family favourite for our breakfast, lunch and dinner every year during the two-day Chinese New Year public holiday. There's such a variety in what they sell, so it's never a problem finding something new to eat, even if it means returning for every meal during a day.

They have everything from prata, murtabak, thosai and putu mayam, to tulang merah, kambing soup, mee goreng, mee kuah and nasi briyani. You name it, they most probably have it. You will find that their menu is printed across an entire wall behind the counter. shocked

Till this day, i have tried their chicken and mutton murtabak. Not only are they really generous with the meat filling, the murtabaks taste really good as well.

I have also taken the kway teow kuah. Again, very generous and the taste of the soup is very rich and flavorful.

Their prata is quite average, but good nonetheless. The same goes for the mee goreng, beehoon goreng and nasi briyani.

Price-wise, most food items cost the same as other eating houses, so there's not much to compare there.

But be sure to find out how much your food costs before you pay 'cos there have been times where they claim to have calculated wrongly, only after i corrected them with their calculations.

A Place Unlike Another Smile Mar 22, 2011

Categories : Western Variety | Café

I went to Joan Bowen Cafe for my mum's birthday this year. My dad heard of this place from his friend, so we decided to try it out.

This cafe was apparently opened with a special purpose unlike most typical cafes. All the staff working here what we call "special people" with autism. But don't be fooled by that. They do an awesome job at running this entire cafe and even preparing the food - all on their own!

You'll be greeted by their warm and friendly smiles and served with the most outstanding service ever. They are simply sweet and and extremely talented, so much so it really touched my heart.

We proceeded to order our meals: pan fried dory, chili crab pasta and ribeye steak.

Their best-selling dish here is their Fish & Chips, which i shall try out when i return another day. But since we already made our orders, we just went ahead with it.

Food
We ordered the pan fried dory for myself and my brother. It was the most tender dory fish i have every tried and do believe that i'm not exaggerating. It really was superbly tender. The taste of the fish left an impression on my tastebuds and i swore i will be visiting them again.

My mum ordered the ribeye steak, which tasted really awesome as well. It was soft, juicy and tender, and rich in flavour. It was served with mash potato that was great as a complement to the steak.

Then my dad ordered the chili crab pasta. No doubt it tasted really good, but my dad being the chili king, thought it wasn't spicy enough. I thought it was just right, putting into consideration that the spiciness was perhaps tailored to suit the majority of their customers.

Overall, the entire experience was one to be remembered. From the ambience to the food and service, everything never failed to put a smile on our faces. lol
