I stay really near this Malay food corner and what I like best about Alfiah Restaurant is that it remains opened when every other food place nearby is closed.

It has also long been a family favourite for our breakfast, lunch and dinner every year during the two-day Chinese New Year public holiday. There's such a variety in what they sell, so it's never a problem finding something new to eat, even if it means returning for every meal during a day.

They have everything from prata, murtabak, thosai and putu mayam, to tulang merah, kambing soup, mee goreng, mee kuah and nasi briyani. You name it, they most probably have it. You will find that their menu is printed across an entire wall behind the counter. shocked

Till this day, i have tried their chicken and mutton murtabak. Not only are they really generous with the meat filling, the murtabaks taste really good as well.

I have also taken the kway teow kuah. Again, very generous and the taste of the soup is very rich and flavorful.

Their prata is quite average, but good nonetheless. The same goes for the mee goreng, beehoon goreng and nasi briyani.

Price-wise, most food items cost the same as other eating houses, so there's not much to compare there.

But be sure to find out how much your food costs before you pay 'cos there have been times where they claim to have calculated wrongly, only after i corrected them with their calculations.

A Place Unlike Another Smile Mar 22, 2011

I went to Joan Bowen Cafe for my mum's birthday this year. My dad heard of this place from his friend, so we decided to try it out.

This cafe was apparently opened with a special purpose unlike most typical cafes. All the staff working here what we call "special people" with autism. But don't be fooled by that. They do an awesome job at running this entire cafe and even preparing the food - all on their own!

You'll be greeted by their warm and friendly smiles and served with the most outstanding service ever. They are simply sweet and and extremely talented, so much so it really touched my heart.

We proceeded to order our meals: pan fried dory, chili crab pasta and ribeye steak.

Their best-selling dish here is their Fish & Chips, which i shall try out when i return another day. But since we already made our orders, we just went ahead with it.

Food
We ordered the pan fried dory for myself and my brother. It was the most tender dory fish i have every tried and do believe that i'm not exaggerating. It really was superbly tender. The taste of the fish left an impression on my tastebuds and i swore i will be visiting them again.

My mum ordered the ribeye steak, which tasted really awesome as well. It was soft, juicy and tender, and rich in flavour. It was served with mash potato that was great as a complement to the steak.

Then my dad ordered the chili crab pasta. No doubt it tasted really good, but my dad being the chili king, thought it wasn't spicy enough. I thought it was just right, putting into consideration that the spiciness was perhaps tailored to suit the majority of their customers.

Overall, the entire experience was one to be remembered. From the ambience to the food and service, everything never failed to put a smile on our faces. lol

Healthy fare Smile Mar 20, 2011

Was here for dinner and i wanted to have something light and healthy.

I came across this Yong Tau Foo stall and the food selection looked quite good.
Everything looked fresh and there was quite a wide variety. One thing i noticed however, was that certain food items like the fresh cuttlefish, dried seaweed and black fungus, were very small.

Those were definitely not worth the price you would pay for a piece.

The entire selection consisted of about 20 over items and everyone fully replenished, unlike certain stalls that have empty food trays at their display.

Some of the items i chose were enoki mushroom, fried hard-boiled egg, crabstick, taupok, bitter gourd with fish paste, meatball, wanton, toufu and white cabbage.

Remember how i was supposed to eat healthy? Well, i ended up being tempted by their laksa gravy. So i opted for that.

Taste-wise, the gravy didn't exactly taste like laksa gravy. It was more of curry actually. But it still tasted very good and i ended up finishing almost all of it.

The yong tau foo tasted quite fresh, but on their own, nothing different from other yong tau foo stalls elsewhere.

Overall, it was still a satisfyingly good meal. Will return in the future if i plan on having something healthy (that's if i keep to it). tongue

Not Worth Your Money Cry Mar 20, 2011

Categories : Singaporean | Food Court | Chinese Soup

I had breakfast here this morning and ordered myself their hotpot soup with noodles.

At $4/-, it was a real waste of my money. The noodles were tasty and the serving portion was rather decent. However, it wasn't as QQ as i would have like it to be.

The hotpot soup was a a major disappointment. While the soup was quite nice, there was hardly any ingredients in it. All i got was one fishball, one meatball, one pathetic slice of fishcake, one egg, barely-there small bits of pork and a 2 lettuce leaves.

I have been to another place in AMK selling the same thing and the portion is at least double that - at the same price.

Bad start to my day.

Blehhh.... OK Mar 19, 2011

My boyfriend and I went to East Coast Food Lagoon the other day for dinner.
It was already close to 9pm when i arrived and i noticed that the crowd was dispersing - many people probably heading home to rest for next day's work.

And I also noticed that my Roxy Laksa stall was closed already. So i decided to try something new from a different stall this time.

I was craving something similar to laksa, so i thought of prawn noodles. Apparently, this stall was the only stall i could find.

I ordered a bowl of prawn noodles soup with kway teow.
The portion was decent enough and it looked quite appetising.
But when i started off by tasting the soup, it tasted very bland and hardly any trace of prawn stock. It was as though they simply replenished the soup by adding more water to the pot without boiling it with the prawns.

Everything else was okay, but how good a bowl of prawn noodles is, really depends on the soup. And unfortunately, the soup just didn't make the cut for me.
