If you were to observe their menu, you will realize they only have one non-spicy item shocked How inconvenient for people who wants to eat Chinese food but can't take spicy food. It seems like their "Chinese" is the China-Chinese and the Singapore-Chinese sort of food... reminds me of one of those shops in Chinatown, actually.

I tried the Braised Pork Rice ($3). It was mediocre and not the Taiwanese style braised pork rice. There was quite an overdose of cinnamon seeds in the rice which I didn't like. The pork was also inconsistent throughout, some were tender enough, some was pure fats and some was so tough to bite! You have the whole spectrum, really. The vegetables were okay. The rice was steaming hot - something I appreciate though. Wouldn't try it again. I wish they sell Zha Jiang Noodles but unfortunately they don't.

Ice kachang! OK Sep 24, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

It was a super hot day today so I decided to get Ice Kachang ($2.50). The ice kachang was really refreshing with three different flavours for the three different colours, red for bandung, yellow for gula melaka and green for pandan (I think). The green flavour is not too obvious. The ice is really good, but unfortunately the red beans underneath the ice was a bit sour and mushy. For safety reasons I skipped the red beans altogether. A bit sad that one of the main ingredients of ice kachang failed so badly. But overall still okayyy.

Tze char at Far East Plaza OK Sep 23, 2013

Categories : Zi Char

You can almost always spot a queue right outside Susan Chan. I love to eat tze-char and rice, so I thought I can't miss trying out this place that is situated right at one of my favourite shopping malls, right? We ordered all the hot favourites of any tze char meal. The table seats six people and in general the portion is either slightly smaller than ideal.

Sweet & Sour Chicken ($17): More sweet than sour, this dish is quite well done with comfortable-sized chicken pieces. I love how the sweet & sour sauce is smooth and thick. My favourite dish for every tze char meal. Susan Chan's rendition of this dish is above average.

Fried Kai Lan Thai Style ($10): Upon a strong recommendation from my colleague, we decided to order this dish. While vegetables are not something I'll order on my own, this dish is okay, I think. It has a light wokhei aroma but I find that the sauce wasn't thick enough for me. Objectively speaking, the kai lan was crunchy and maintain its freshness but I think vegetables still don't sit well with me.

Fu Rong Omelette ($7): Another "standard" dish, but I think their Fu Rong Omelette is a bit too oily and hence slightly below average. Not recommended.

Fried Beancurd Hotplate ($17): Deliciously rich in flavour and ingredients, but too little to be shared among six people (perhaps four people's sharing). Recommended but it's a little too expensive.

There isn't much service to speak of, but they get things done pretty fast - issuing seats and taking orders, but nothing beyond that. The place has long rectangular tables rather than round tables, so not as conducive for bigger groups that want to engage in conversations. Note that you can't really linger around after your meal because there is a pressurizing queue right outside. A little too expensive for the quality and portion though.

A little bit different OK Sep 20, 2013

I was psyched to have 7" Pizza right at South Spine Koufu because I no longer have to travel over to Hall 1 canteen for this. The pizza stall here is more of a open-concept where you can see them make your pizza, but sometimes I'll see little lapses in the way they prepare like throwing an ingredient onto the pizza when it has fallen onto the table. Well I shall assume that the table is clean.

This time I ordered the Hawaiian Pizza ($3.90) and the standard wasn't the same as when it was at Hall 1 canteen. Maybe it's because there are much more orders to handle here. But the crust part of the pizza was rather uncooked, it tasted a little floury, but the good side is that the bottom part wasn't overly burnt. The cheese wasn't sufficiently melted either. Hmm. I guess they could leave it in the oven for a *little* longer to make sure that it is ready before giving it to me...

Cheap Lunch Deal (For Orchard) OK Sep 16, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Irish | Bars/Lounges | Restaurant

Malones Irish Restaurant & Bar is one of those restaurants right outside Somerset 313 with alfresco dining, with a laidback atmosphere. My friends and I caught sight of their weekday Value Lunch Deal ($5.90++ to $9.90++ depending on which main you choose) which includes Soup of the Day + Main + Drink.

The soup of the day was Asparagus Soup which tasted nothing like asparagus but more like a thick flavourful gruel made of mushrooms, pepper and salt.

The main I chose was Ham and Mushroom Pasta ($8.90 for this lunch set) and it was passable. The cheesey cream sauce was surprisingly not cloying and I wasn't too jelat at the end of it. The ham slices were the Cold Storage store-bought sort of ham, don't expect too much of it. The spaghetti was not very springy but edible.

The drink was Iced Lemon Tea (there were other choices like Lime, Sprite, etc.) and it was quite diluted and the tea taste wasn't strong enough. Feels more like plain water though.

Don't expect too much and you should be fine, after all it's quite cheap for a full meal in Orchard.
