$2 Laksa - Nice and Shiok Smile Sep 02, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean | Coffeeshop | Noodles

Ever heard the saying that all good things are cheap? No? Well, it certainly seems to ring true for this bowl of Laksa. Hidden in a small coffee shop along Jalan Besar, it's such an unassuming coffee shop that you wouldn't think that there is a hidden Laksa treasure here. The place is quite hot like most typical coffee shop but for good food, just gotta bear with it!

The Laksa was prepared by this sweet lady manning the pot. She was meticulously soaking and draining the noodles several time with the Laksa broth before finally scooping a final bowl of the soup into the bowl to serve. I think she's cooking the raw noodles with the heat of the Laksa broth and by doing so she instills more flavour than you would get if you cook the noodles with hot water.

This is one of the few places they still use Charcoal to cook their Laksa. Don't stand too near, it's really hot! Food cooked the traditional method always seem better for whatever reason. Perhaps we appreciate the extra efforts it take.

There is a long queue when we got there. At $2 a bowl, it's such a steal! How many place can you get a bowl of piping hot delicious Laksa (with cockles!) at $2!! It may not be a huge bowl but enough to fill you up!

The Laksa looks so sedap! And the unique thing is you only need a spoon to eat it because they have cut the noodles into bite size so there's no need for chopsticks. Good idea right? And look at that generous handful of cockles. Mix the chili in and you've got a wonderful bowl of Laksa! The soup is spicy, thick and you can taste all the bits of hebi (dried shrimps) in it! The coconut taste is not too strong which is nice! A little bit oily but man, I was slurping up every last mouthful of it. The noodles were cooked well, slightly al dante, and soaks up all that spicy goodness of that broth. Shiok!

Here's another shot where you can see that the noodles have been snipped to bite size portion. Rejoice lazy people rejoice! tongue

I love Loola's! Smile Jan 30, 2013

Some fancy photo editing! Tried the Braised pork belly with bubble and squeak and this is fantastic! The pork belly was soft and melts in your mouth goodness. The fat to meat ratio is perfect and paired with the dense bubble and squeak (seems to be some sort of vegetable mash potato but denser texture) is delightful. I would eat more of this. For dessert, we had the pistachio souffle. This isn't for everyone as the pistachio flavour is very strong and for me, it's a little too much.

This is chocolate foodgasm! I wasn't expecting much of the lava cake from a bar place like Fern & Kiwi but this blew me away! Firstly, the dish is lovely to behold. It came in a bowl, relatively deep, and was just calling for all of us to dig in. The centre is perfectly melted and gooey (like all good lava cake should be) and it was so RICH that I had that "close eyes" moment. Pair with fantastic ice cream which greatly helps compliment the richness of this dessert. Very satisfying and thus far one of the best Lava Chocolate Cake I've had. bowl chopstick

High tea affair Smile Feb 17, 2013

I love high tea and I was super delighted to be able to try the Afternoon Tea at St Regis. I have to say I was impressed. The decor was lovely and luxurious, and you definitely can have a relaxing afternoon whether you're meeting with friends or just looking to chill alone. They have a scones bar! There were 5 different flavours but I tried the truffle scone and the original scone. The truffle scone was divine! You get a strong flavour of truffle and it borders on the sweet/savoury for me. Ask for the truffle cream to go along with it, you won't regret!

The assortment of jams you get to choose to pair with your truffles. I like the apricot jam.

Their 3 tier made me drool when it arrived at the table. The bottom tier was your usual finger sandwiches, but it was the 2nd and top tier that made me excited. The second tier had quiche and pot pie! The quiche was light and delightful, not too heavy to make you gelat. I was told they change their pot pie fillings frequently, so the filling I had was beef and it was awesome! Breaking into that crispy puff pastry to dig into the pot of salty tender beef goodness...sigh smile
The top tier had pea soup and a ham and egg kind of pudding. The pea soup is good! You'll be surprised because I was expecting some yucky pea liquid but it was warm and aromatic and damn good!

For the Afternoon Tea, you also get to hit the buffet of desserts! How awesome is that! You get a variety of cakes, tarts, macrons (must try), crumble, etc. Take as much as you can eat! Plus wash it down with the lovely TWG teas they have available. The afternoon will fly by real quick as you enjoy yourself there!

Yakitori with a view  Smile Jan 27, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Bars/Lounges

Moonstone is located at The Jewel Box and sits facing Habourfront direction with a wonderful view. It's real breezy which is a great relief from Singapore's searing weather. This place serves Japanese yakitori and have a wide selection of beers and sake! A really nice place to come and relax when you want to get away from the bustling city.

I had one of their signature sake, served warm as recommended by the staff. It was delicious! The first sip had that sharp bite and burns slightly but from the 2nd sip onwards, it didn't have any bite at all! It went down smooth and left a slightly sweet/bitter after taste. This is good sake. Tip: If you stop too long between your next sip, prepare to have that sharpness again.

Ordered the grilled squid and I'm not sure what sauce it was served on but it's fresh, salty and really goes well with the sake.

And of course the Yakitori!! Grilled meat on sticks, all seasoned well. We had the chicken, pork and salmon with mentaiko cheese. The last one was the BEST! I could eat a few sticks of it! I tried their Ox tongue as well. This is not for the faint hearted as it was chewy and slightly gamey.

Wash it all down with a cold beer. smile
