Ramen okay OK May 17, 2013

Tried the ramen and gotta say it's okay but Santouka & Ippudo ramen are better. Their char siew is nice - soft and meaty. However, the noodles and broth aren't very memorable. Is good but not super fantastic. Loaded with a LOT of bean sprout so if you hate bean sprout better ask them not to add. Of course like most ramen, there is quite a bit of msg because you feel super thirsty after eating this.

Average French Fare OK May 17, 2013
Categories : French | Restaurant | Desserts and Cakes | Roasted Meat

Decided to give this place a try after hearing some good reviews about it. Summary would be okay to eat but not really a first choice kind of place.

The mushroom soup is super creamy! When I say creamy, I don't mean the texture (it's actually rather watery) but the cream flavour. I prefer it if I can taste more of the mushroom so that I don't feel like I'm drinking down pure cream.

Their famed roasted chicken. I ordered half and it's okay. I gotta give them props for not making dry roast chicken and the mushroom sauce gives the meat some needed flavour. Otherwise, relatively normal.

No! This is bad. Do not order this especially if you like escargot. I can't describe how this taste like but just weird and unpleasant.

Creamy smooth mash potato is hard to get wrong. Very nice with a good amount of butter whipped in.

Their tiramisu is also so-so. You get the alcohol soaked sponge cake but not enough of the chocolate to balance it. The main attraction is that it is served in a jar and that's about it. Okay to eat but don't expect any "WOW" moment.

Fanastic Yakitori Smile May 17, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Ramen | Sushi/Sashimi

At the old run down building of cuppage plaza, it is a haven for Japanese food. There are loads of Japanese restaurants (and shady pubs with girls in tight clothes but ignore those) ranging from expensive to affordable. I was introduced to this place by a friend and do come early because seats are limited and there will be a long queue if you hit the peak dinner time.

My friend had a bowl of Oden. The soup is simply packed full of flavour! If you don't feel like having a heavy meal or slightly under the weather, this is the dish for you! Light, not too salty, and warms the belly. Japanese idea of chicken soup smile

This is a yakitori dish of bacon wrapped oyster. Super delicious. The yakitori stove is manned by this old stern looking Japanese uncle who carefully flips and grills all the meat, seafood and veg on a hot grill. The bacon is dripping in oil and compliments the oyster very well. Taste is smoky, greasy and has a slight seafood briny flavour from the oyster. A must try. Another dish (which I don't have the photo) which is AWESOME is the yakitori pork belly. Super super sinful but damn good! Even my friend who doesn't like pork belly was converted after eating it. It's like bacon but 100 times the taste and very nice and chewy.

I had the curry rice with pork katsu. This dish I feel is normal. I had better elsewhere but the curry is good and has a home-cooked feel.. I prefer my katsu thick and juicy compared to this thinner and dryer version. Nonetheless, I left this place satisfied and will definitely be coming back to try more things.

The Omakase burger arrives! Smile May 03, 2013

I've been waiting to try the Omakase burger for quite a few weeks! Was so happy to finally try it! Firstly, let me warn that this is no cheap fast food price meal. I ordered the set - Omakase Cheese burger, with a side of fries (upgrade to Truffle fries) and a drink. This meal cost me over $22!! It is quite pricy and the burger is small but I was sharing with a friend so we split the cost.

I ordered my burger medium done. It was very juicy and very nice! The beef didn't have that cheap (I call it the McDonald burger taste) aftertaste that most fast food burgers have. However, I'm not all convinced that it is worth the price. Certainly one of the better burgers in SG, but I didn't have that super "OMG" experience. The truffle fries are good - generous amount of truffle oil sprinkled over. Overall, I'll probably come back again to try another burger on their menu ... if I'm feeling wealthy. lol

Fruit Juice Mee Siam Smile May 03, 2013

Categories : Malay | Singaporean Chinese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

Heard about the famous fruit juice mee siam at Hong Lim so I had to try it! Firstly, I got the most luxurious bowl on the menu - $6 for a bowl of fruit juice mee siam and crayfish. The broth is really good! Light and slightly sweet and tangy - not too heavy like some other mee siam. I suspect the fruits may have a mixture of pineapples, lime or lemon. There is also shredded chicken, prawns, bean sprouts and egg. The crayfish is sweet and fresh and adds extra richness to the dish. Absolutely recommend this!
