Lunch @ Wo Peng Restaurant Cry Dec 22, 2014

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Dim Sum | Seafood

I was told by a friend that Wo Peng Restaurant brings you the very best traditional and authentic Hong Kong style Cantonese cusine. Armed with two sets of Groupon coupons (worth SGD$80 each), I bought my family of four to try their lunch on a weekday.

The restaurant was crowded even though our appointment was 130pm. The staff were busy handling other customers. Most of the customers were using the Groupon coupons vouchers. It took ten minutes before the waitress was able to take our order. It also took a long time before the dishes were served. We ordered some dishes from the a la carte menu and some dim sum. Perhaps we came too late as most of the dishes stated in the menu were not available. We were rather disappointed.

Soup
We ordered two types of of soup. The menu reads "A Daily Soup, A Healthy Choice", so we selected the healthy version. The double boiled chicken soup with bamboo pith and chinese cabbage is quite reasonable in terms of taste but it is quite pricey at SGD13 per bowl. I didn't enjoy the double boiled cordyceps flower soup with drendrobium and meat reduction. It tasted like Chinese medicine.

Dishes

The Stir-fried asparagus and scallops was nice. The scallops were big and fresh. The irony : This was a substituted dish as the original dish which we ordered (traditional smoked and roasted duck with camphor and tea leaf) did not arrive after waiting for fifty minutes. The staff did not realize that the duck was out of stock until we enquired why it took so long to serve the duck). It was obviously a mistakesad
Nice!

Nice!

The blanch Taiwan cabbage with century egg, salted egg and egg white in superior stock was quite nice. It wasn't too salty and it is comparable to the one served in Diao Xiao Er, which is my all time favourite!

Dim Sum
We ordered mostly common and standard dim sum such as Siew Mai, Har Gow (Fresh Shrimp Dumplings) and Steamed Pork Ribs. I would rate the dim sum average and reasonable which you can get similar dim sum in other Cantonese restaurants.
Reasonable siew mai

Desserts
Out of the seven items advertised in the desserts menu, only three are available. We selected Chilled Mango Puree with Pomelo and Sago and Home-made Osmunthus Jelly. Similarly like the dim sums, I would rate the desserts reasonable and average. I like the sweet Mango Pudding with pomelo (though little) better than the Osmunthus Jelly. The Jelly tasted like agar agar and it costs SGD6 per bowl.
Sweet and quite nice!

Conclusion
To be honest, I was disappointed with the lunch @ Wo Peng Restaurant. It fell short of my expectations on many factors such as quality of food, pricing, customer services, waiting time and food presentation. Sincerely hope they can make improvement to win back the customers in future.

We heard so much about the peking duck and we had really wanted to try the famous peking duck. However, you need to wait for 50 minutes and the two of us probably cannot finish one duck by ourselves. Hence, we opted for the Set Lunch which costs SGD$58++ per person this time round and will return with more family members to try the peking duck.

Double boiled live prawn and scallops with superior soup served in young coconut
The first dish served was the hot soup. I liked the refreshing broth. There were fresh prawns and scallops in the soup. They served the soup in a coconut which is something different.

Steamed cod fillet with shredded ginger and "Chen Pi"
The cod fish was smooth and not too "milky", and I liked it prepared this way, steamed it and eat it while it is hot. The serving was not too huge and it was just right.

Pan-Fried Kurobuta Pork
The pork ribs were tender and soft and easy to chew. I love the presentation!

Stir-fried asparagus with fungus and macadamia nuts
The only vegetable dish served, the combination of asaparagus, fungus and macadmia nuts was quite interesting. I love the macadamia nuts the most and hope that they had put in more nuts to this dish.

Fried rice with Dried Conpoy and Seafood
I found the fried rice too plain and luckily they provided me with green chillies to go with the fried rice. The presentation is nice and the serving was too generous for one person.
Fried Rice is average but the presentation is nice.

Double boiled Hashima with Almond
I was too full to enjoy this hot dessert. The hashima has a strong distinct almond smell and taste. It would be nice if they had substituted this dessert with chilled mango pudding.

Overall, a decent place for a reasonable set lunch. The ambience is nicely decorated and the food and customer services are acceptable. I still hope to try the Peking Duck one day!

Porn's Lunch Smile Dec 20, 2014

Categories : Thai

The title of this review may be misleading  tongue !

This is actually the Thai restaurant run by the popular Singapore TV host and Celebrity Pornsak Prajakwit. So, we decided to venture into the "Sexy Thai Food"!

We didn't make any reservation and walked in directly to their Star Vista's outlet. As it was a weekday during lunch break, it wasn't crowded. We managed to get a seat quickly.

The entrance is extremely colorful and delightful and there is a mock up statue of Pornsak at the entrance to welcome us to his restaurant.

As there is only two of us, we ordered two simple famous Thai food.

Pratunam Fish Cake
The fish cakes go well with white rice. The prawn cake is delicious and one serving is good for two adults. Good balance and combination of fresh prawns, pepper and bread crumbs. You must dip the prawn cake in the "Pad Thai" i.e. a reddish looking sweet taste sauce. Such sauces are common in Thai street hawker in Bangkok.
Must eat it with the sauce!

Innocent Tom Yum Fish Soup
I am unsure why they named it as innocent. It is definitely not innocent! Though this is the "clear" tom yum version, it is really hot and spicy!!!wow There are many different types of tom yum soup available here. You can take your time to pick the type you enjoy. The fish slice were fresh and sweet. yummy
Hot hot hot!

Overall, we had a enjoyable lunch with interesting and colorful art work on the wall and nice ambience. The customer services were also above average. The cooking is really commendable and yummy! I will plan another visit soon!

Department Lunch @ Gan Yakitori Smile Dec 08, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Steaks and Grills

The Star Vista at Buona Vista offers a large number of eateries and restaurants. The addition of Gan Yakitori Japanese Restaurant on the 2nd floor increases the wide range of dining options which is good for foodie like me.

I did my research before I organized a department lunch at Gan Yakitori. According to The Star Vista website which introduces this restaurant as one of their tenants, Gan Yakitori uses bincho charcoal for great taste. Bincho charcoal is the most suitable fuel for grilled dishes and all their yakitori are carefully grilled to perfection by their Japanese chef. Gan Yakitori also uses 100% Japanese rice and their special chicken soup is painstakingly boiled for over 8 hours with loadful of ingredients and it is "MSG free".

Satisfied with the research, we organized an early Christmas lunch at Gan Yakitori today with 9 of my colleagues.

We arrived at the restaurant at 12noon and the Japanese Manager led us to a long dining table reserved for 10 pax. The waitress provided us with clean napkins to wash our our hands while we were looking at the set lunch menu.

Unaiju Teishoku (Charcoal Eel Set)
Most of us ordered the unagi set lunch. The original price for the set lunch was $19+. They are having a special promotion (30% discount) and offering it at $13+. It was a good deal as we know good quality unagi is quite pricey. For those who do not know unagi, it is a savory and slightly sweet freshwater eel.
Tasty and delicious!

Tasty and delicious!

The two pieces of unagi fillet were placed on top of the yellow colored  "egg noodles" and the Japanese rice at the bottom. The first bite of the unagi was unbelievable. The Japanese Chef did a great job by grilling the unagi to the right texture, infusing with sauce and reducing the the excess fat making it really delicious.yummy My colleagues shared the same sentiments and they finished all their unagi. I believe the Japanese chef was highly trained to grill the unagi in order to achieve this perfect taste.

Buta Don Teishoku (Pork & Onion with Egg Yolk Rice Set)
This set lunch costs $12.80. The egg yolk was nested nicely in the middle of the pork and onion rice set bowl. Only one colleague ordered this set and his verdict was not bad. The pork was just nice for him and and the sauce was not too sweet.
Value for money set lunch!

Mizutaki Nabe Teishoku (Chicken and Vegetables with Soup Hot Pot Set)
This set lunch costs $14.80. The presentation was not bad and it looks like steamboat served in a hot pot. Similarly, although only one colleague ordered this set, she likes it for the simplicity (tender chicken meat, vegetables and tofu cooked in the hot pot) and served well with a bowl of fragrant Japanese rice.

Overall, it is a good place for a simple lunch with friends, relatives or colleagues. Their popular set lunch range from $12.80 to $14.80 and usually it includes a bowl of soup and small salad. Drinks are not included and you can order Iced or Hot Green Tea at $1per cup (complimentary refill). All prices are subjected to 10% Service Charge and 7% GST.

We heard Morganfield's offers fabulous set lunch. My colleague and I decided to lunch in at their Star Vista Branch which is within walking distance from our office.

Located on the second floor of The Star Vista, the restaurant is huge and you can pick the corner window seat for a beautiful view of the greenery surrounding. The restaurant is decorated to the theme of American style.

We did not make any reservation and we walked in directly. We did not have to wait too long and we were ushered to a comfortable seats. After browsing their menu, we decided to order their "Oinkingly Top Value Set Lunch".

Beer Battered Fish Fillet
The fish fillets were huge, tasty and fresh. The fish meat was smooth and tender. I like itflower But I wondered why they named it as "beer battered"?

Black Pepper Chicken Chop
The chicken thigh was awesome and delicious but it was rather small. The fish fillet serving was more generous. French fries were nice with chilli sauce.

Overall, it was really a good lunch and it was value for money. I like the ambience as it was quiet and you will have a lot of privacy. The waitresses' customer services were good and they offered us hot napkins at the end of the meal.smile
