Chicken Rice  OK Jan 18, 2014

Categories : Hainanese | Food Court | Chicken Rice

I went to Tan Tock Seng food court for my lunch. It has been some time since I had chicken rice, hence I decided to order from the chicken rice stall. I ordered the fried chicken rice. The chicken rice comes with a bowl of soup as well which is quite standard. The chicken rice is quite oily and it is leaning more towards the salty side. I felt that the flavour of the rice isn't that authentic as it seems like it is not flavoured using real chicken stock, but using more of msg instead. The chicken are not as crispy as imagined, probably because it had been fried for quite some time. It is hence a little disappointing, even though the chicken meat is rather tender and flavourful. Overall, I will probably give this stall a miss next time and try other stalls in the food court.

During the weekend my mother did not cook so we all had take outs for our dinner. We ordered from this cai fun stall. I ordered for myself the stir-fried lady finger, tofu cooked with the salty bean and gong bao chicken. First thing is that the portion of ingredients as you can see from the photo is actually quite little. Tastewise, it is quite a disappointment as well. The stir fried lady finger while tasty is far too oily. The tofu is very salty even though it looked very plain. I am guessing it is because of the salty bean sauce used to cook it. Lastly, the gong bao chicken was also a disapointment as it tasted more sweet than spicy. With the less than average taste and small portions, I will probably avoid this stall for some time. I can't really remember how much each packet cost as there are a total of 5 packets ordered, but I am guessing it is $2.70 for 2 vegetables and 1 meat.

Spending per head: Approximately $3

Beehoon OK Jul 15, 2013

Categories : Malay | Coffeeshop

I ordered the fried bee hoon and yellow noodle from this stall yesterday morning for my brunch. The queue for this stall is quite short so it is really order and go. They have quite a lot of ingredients to choose from like fishcakes, otah, fried egg, chicken wings etc etc. I chose this which is a fried chicken patty. The exterior is quite crispy and the chicken meat inside is surprisingly tender. I am guessing it is made using the chicken thigh meat. The beehoon and yellow noodles taste quite nice, just that the yellow noodles seemed to be more greasy. Next time around I will probably just order the beehoon on its own. This costs me around $2.20 if I remember correctly.

tau suan OK Jul 13, 2013

I normally do not eat tau suan as I find the taste to be quite cloying after a few bites. Nonetheless, I decided to buy it since I was going to share it with my mum. The tau suan is actually yellow beans that have been cooked for a long time. The beans are quite soft and the mixture is not too thick nor too watery. The you tiao that was added to the top of the tau suan is not soggy as well, and it is still slightly crispy. I find that if you get tired of the taste after a while, pairing it with the you tiao will help in making the taste less cloying. This bowl of tau suan costs $1.30 if I remember correctly.

Pulut hitam OK Jul 12, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Food Court | Desserts and Cakes | Juices

My mum and I were at Great World City and after our shopping at the supermarket, we decided to rest our feet and have some desserts. We ordered the pulut hitam as it has been very long since we last had it. Pulut hitam is essentially black glutinous rice pudding and it is usually eaten with coconut milk. It can be quite a filling dessert, so we decided to share it instead of eating one bowl by ourselves. The glutinous rice dessert is quite thick and it is more sweet than I would have preferred it to be. The coconut milk does help in enhancing the flavour as it helps to negate the sweetness and also add a different dimension of flavour to the dessert. I would still prefer home-cooked pulut hitam by my mum.
