Noodles OK Jan 22, 2014

Categories : Food Court | Noodles

I had my dinner at HDB Hub with my parents. We had originally wanted to have dim sum at Tim Ho Wan, but the queue was simply too long so we gave up and settled for hawker food instead. I chose to have noodles since it is already dinner time and I wanted something that is less filling. I ordered from this noodles stall as it had quite a few different types of noodles like mini wok as well. I ordered the fried dumpling noodles for $4. The fried dumplings are quite fresh as it is still warm when I ate it and the dumpling skin is really crispy. The filling is also a little moist and the dumpling filling is adequately seasoned. I could just enjoy the taste of the dumpling on its own without having to dip it in the sauce. The noodles are alright. I mixed it up with some cut chilli as I enjoy spicy food and I find that it helps to spice up the otherwise normal noodles.

Wan Chai always seems to be very crowded and seats are quite limited. Fortunately, there are only two of us so we can skip a few people ahead and get seats as it is much easier to seat two than 3 or 4. We ordered desserts as we already had our main meal. I ordered the traditional dessert, the almond paste while my friend got the barley beancurd sweet soup. We shared the two bowls among the both of us and I have to say I preferred my almond paste. The almond paste here is thick and rich and it has a nice fragrance of almond. It is also not too sweet. On the other hand, the barley beancurd is just normal and I felt that the soup has more sugar taste than from the taste of barley/beancurd. I personally wouldn't order that again, but the almond paste is worth trying!

Spicy beef set OK Jan 19, 2014

My dining companion wanted to eat from the Korean stall, so I followed suit and ordered from there as well since I only had to queue once. I got the spicy beef soup which comes with rice, kimchi and ikan bilis. The wait was quite long even though there is only one customer in front of us, so it is fortunate that we are second in the line. The soup is quite savoury as it is a little spicy and sour. While the soup is tasty, I find that the ingredients are quite little. The main ingredient, the beef, is quite little and it does not really justify the price of $5.90. The beef is quite nice though as it is sliced very thinly and the part of the beef given is easy to chew. Besides the beef, there is also an egg, vegetables in the soup as well as the tang hoon noodles. The tang hoon noodles is not the korean tang hoon as it is much more thin and it breaks easily. If the portion of beef is more, I would have given a higher rating.

Economy rice OK Jan 19, 2014

I had lunch at this hawker centre around a few weeks back. I didn't see anything that I particular like to eat in the hawker centre, hence I just settled for rice from the mixed rice stall. I ordered a total of three dishes, braised mushrooms, vegetables and brinjals. Even though there is no meat, the priced ended up to be that of 1 meat + 2 vegetable price, probably because of the mushrooms which are considered as a meat dish for most stalls. Nonetheless, I was glad I ordered the mushrooms as it is very juicy and well flavoured. The mushrooms are also quite plump and it has a nice texture. The brinjal is delicious, but a little too oily. I think it was probably fried before stir frying to give it its shape and glossy exterior.

ice kachang OK Jan 18, 2014

Categories : Coffeeshop | Desserts and Cakes

I met up with my friend at Westmall and thereafter, we went to the nearby coffee shop to have desserts. We ordered the ice kachang since it has been quite a long while since we had this traditional dessert. For the "ingredients", we choose the default which is the atap seeds, red beans, chin chow grass jelly and other green/red coloured jellies. We requested for more milk and less syrup as we preferred a more milky taste. The ice kachang was stacked quite highly and we dug in. The ice is quite fine which makes it easy to scrap into the ice kachang and it is also easy to eat. There are some ice kachangs that I had before where there is one large lump of ice which makes it hard to eat but not here. The "ingredients" are rather sparse though, and there is only one atap seed. Normally, there is at least two in the ice kachang that I had so I was quite disappointed. This costs $1.80, which is a little not worth the price even the little ingredients present.
