Coconut pancake Smile Jan 18, 2014
Categories : Hawker Centre

I was at the Geylang home for the aged and I wondered into this nearby hawker centre to get some light bites during tea time. I ordered one coconut pancake from Ri Mei Pancake. There is one other stall selling pancakes as well, but I just settled for the pancake at this stall since it is the first stall that I have spotted. There are other flavours of pancake available besides coconut. There is the standard peanut pancake and red bean pancake as well. Each pancake costs 70 cents. If you get 3 of them, it would be $2. The pancake is quite spongy and soft and it has a very light pandan fragrance to it. The moist coconut filling is sufficiently sweetened as well and it goes really well with the pancake. I like that the coconut filling is moist as there is some juice from the coconut shreds when I bite into it. I regretted buying only one pancake.

Spingy, tasty noodles  Smile Jan 18, 2014

It used to be rather hard to find Pontian Wanton Noodles around a few years back, where I remember the outlet that I used to frequent is the one at Heeren. Nowadays, there are many branches of Pontian at various locations which means that I can easily get my fix of it.

The noodles are the selling point as their noodles are touted to be springy and qq. Of course, their signature noodles also comes with their combinations of sauces. There are a total of 5 types if I am not wrong, it can be just with black sauce, or black sauce with chilli, pure chilli, pure ketchup or a mix of chilli and ketchup. The portion size is petit and each bowl costs $4. I chose to have non-fried wantons which will come in the soup. The char siew is just normal but then again, I am there for the noodles. I always order the pure chilli combination and it is really "shiok" eating it as the chilli is quite hot and the noodles are tangy and springy. While the char siew is normal, I thought the wantons are not bad as the filling is savoury with a good balance of lean and fatty meat. That said, for $4, it is slightly pricy given the small portions, but no one does noodles better than them.

Spending per head: Approximately $4

Mocha Cake Smile Jan 18, 2014

Categories : Bakery

My friend liked the cake from Emicakes, so we decide to go with her wishes and get her birthday cake from Emicakes. We had 8 of us plus the birthday girl, hence we got the 15 cm Mocha cake. It is slightly small for 8 of us, but it is alright since it is just for candle blowing. The cake is filled with cream outside and the internal of the cake is made of vanilla sponge, interpersed with mocha flavoured cream. The cake is quite light tasting as the sponge cake is airy and the cream is light tasting. The mocha taste is not too strong though, it would be better if the taste is more distinct. However, that said, this cake is good because it is light on the palatte and it would be perfect after a heavy dinner.

Jollibean Smile Jan 18, 2014

Jollibean is always my trusted place to buy pancakes. Their pancakes are huge and can definitely help to keep hunger pangs at bay. I was doing a stocktake at night and I bought a box of three pancakes for me and my colleagues. The triangular ones costs $1.20 each and if you get three, it is cheaper. I wanted the peanut pancake, so I got two peanut and one red bean. The pancakes are really heavy as the pancake is thick and the filling is also generous. I love the sweet and crunchy peanut filling which is perfect as the pancake is rather thick. The good thing about having jollibean peanut pancake is that you don't waste any bit of peanuts as the peanuts are quite sticky unlike those traditional pancakes where the peanuts are coarse and dispersed and much of it will drop back into the plastic bag instead of your mouth. For jollibean pancake, everything goes in! At $1.20, it is still quite worth the money as it is a filling and satisfying snack.

Sheng Mian Smile Jan 18, 2014

Categories : Coffeeshop | Zi Char

The hawker centre is quite empty at night at around 8pm when I went and there isn't much choices of food left. I decided to order from the zi char stall as the food will be served hot. I ordered a plate of crispy noodle at $4. The waiting time is quite fast since it is really over the peak dinner hours. The sheng mian comes with slices of fishcake, lean meat, two prawns and vegetables. The noodles are very tasty with the gravy as there is still a slight crispiness when I bite into the noodles although I have softened it by mixing with the gravy. The gravy is not too salty or thick and I did not feel very thirsty after eating. In addition, the prawns are also fresh and for the price, I thought the ingredients given are ample. I will definitely patronise them again.
