yummy sashimi salad  Smile Jan 19, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

I had a quick and satisfying lunch at Ichiban Boshi yesterday. There is quite a lot of different items on the menu and there are pictures accompanying the items which is great as the visual image is always much better than just text. I originally wanted to order the 7 piece salmon sashimi which costs $9.90 but when I saw the sashimi salad, I decided to order that since the price is the same and I thought it would be great to try out another restaurant’s sashimi salad to see how it compares to the one I frequently ate at Sushi Tei. Like Sushi Tei, the dressing comes on the side which is good as it gives customers the choice of how much to add. However, there is only one dressing available, unlike in Sushi Tei where there are 3. Anyway, I would say in terms of value, Ichiban Boshi definitely wins since their sashimi is sliced and I counted around 7 or 8 pieces of salmon in total, with some small cubes of tuna. Whereas in Sushi Tei, the sashimi are all cut into little cubes and I think the combined sashimi is definitely lesser than Ichiban’s. I really enjoyed the sashimi salad here and it is very satisfying – crisp lettuce with shredded carrot and cucumber, tomato quarters and sashimi, everything is very refreshing to the bite. The dressing is tangy as well and it goes well with the vegetables. I will definitely order this the next time I return!

Economy rice OK Jan 19, 2014

I had lunch at this hawker centre around a few weeks back. I didn't see anything that I particular like to eat in the hawker centre, hence I just settled for rice from the mixed rice stall. I ordered a total of three dishes, braised mushrooms, vegetables and brinjals. Even though there is no meat, the priced ended up to be that of 1 meat + 2 vegetable price, probably because of the mushrooms which are considered as a meat dish for most stalls. Nonetheless, I was glad I ordered the mushrooms as it is very juicy and well flavoured. The mushrooms are also quite plump and it has a nice texture. The brinjal is delicious, but a little too oily. I think it was probably fried before stir frying to give it its shape and glossy exterior.

Herbal soup Smile Jan 19, 2014

Categories : Food Court | Chinese Soup

Nowadays it is quite common for food centres to be located at MRT stations. I think this food court is fairly recent as I don't recall seeing it in the past. As I was nursing a cold, I decided to have something soupy for my dinner. I ordered from the herbal soups stall, the red dates and lotus root soup. The soup comes with red dates, lotus roots and some pork. The soup is rather light tasting and it doesn't feel very heavy. The lotus roots are quite crunchy to munch on and I dipped it in the sauce so that it has more taste. The meat is rather tough. It could have been better if the meat is more tender. It is a comforting soup as it is warm and it helped in alleviating my cold a little as I was sneezing non-stop before having my meal. I guess a hot soup always helps in making the body warm.

Udders scoop ice cream Smile Jan 19, 2014

Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

I have not been to Udders for quite some time since its outlets are not very accessible. Hence, when I was at Bukit Timah over the weekend, I made it a point to go over as there is an outlet at Lorong Kilat. The ice cream is so good, I tookaway one scoop after having one scoop at the shop itself. This is the scoop that I took away, the Rum Rum Raisin flavour. Alcoholic lovers will love this ice cream as it is quite strong on the alcohol flavour and it is not overly sweet as well. I really love this flavour as I have mentioned, the potency of the alcohol is there. Unlike some other ice cream parlours which try to make it less strong, this is the real deal. The raisins also have a strong taste of alcohol. I think it must have been soaked in rum as well as it is also alcoholic. They have other alcoholic ice creams like Orange Choc Bitters, Baileys & Bourbon but Rum Rum Raisin is still my favourite.

Huge pineapple tarts Smile Jan 19, 2014
Categories : Bakery | Desserts and Cakes

Le Cafe's pineapple tarts are always a must have in my house. This year, I ordered early and collected it last week. The pineapple tarts are named as golf ball pineapple tarts due to its large size, and each container only has around 10 pineapple tarts. The tarts are generously filled with the sweet pineapple paste and the external pastry just crumbles in your mouth as you eat it. The pineapple paste is really moist and sticky and sweeter than normal pineapple tart fillings. I normally share one with someone else as it is too sinful to eat the whole piece by myself and I think half is just right to satisfy my cravings for it.
