Spicy beef set OK Jan 19, 2014

My dining companion wanted to eat from the Korean stall, so I followed suit and ordered from there as well since I only had to queue once. I got the spicy beef soup which comes with rice, kimchi and ikan bilis. The wait was quite long even though there is only one customer in front of us, so it is fortunate that we are second in the line. The soup is quite savoury as it is a little spicy and sour. While the soup is tasty, I find that the ingredients are quite little. The main ingredient, the beef, is quite little and it does not really justify the price of $5.90. The beef is quite nice though as it is sliced very thinly and the part of the beef given is easy to chew. Besides the beef, there is also an egg, vegetables in the soup as well as the tang hoon noodles. The tang hoon noodles is not the korean tang hoon as it is much more thin and it breaks easily. If the portion of beef is more, I would have given a higher rating.

Seafood Aglio Olio Smile Jan 19, 2014

It is my first visit to The Connoisseur Concerto (TCC) and frankly speaking, I was quite shocked at the prices they are charging since it appeared that they are more like a casual café. Anyway, since me and my friend are already there, we decide to just try it out since we are both first timers to tcc. I was browsing through the menu and immediately, the Seafood Aglio Olio got my eye. The description states that it is subtly flavoured with chilli and garlic, with scallops and prawns. The dish took around 10 minutes to come and the presentation of the dish is really good. There are a total of 3 prawns and 3 scallops which is really expensive as the dish costs $21++. While the prawns are crunchy and well flavoured, I felt the scallops are quite a disappointment as it isn’t as nice… I felt that there is a slight fishy taste which is a pity. The aglio olio while being tasty with the garlic oil, is not very spicy as well, and it could definitely be spicier. Overall, I think I probably will not return as the prices are on the high side and the dish did not really justify the high prices.

Recently, I went with my friend for lunch at The Soup Spoon. As we are both not too hungry having had breakfast less than 2 hours ago, we decided to just order a soup set (add $4.90 to a soup for a set) to share. We ordered the chef’s special, the Prawn Britsque and for our set, we chose the Chilled Soba with Teriyaki Chicken with an apple. The Prawn Britsque is really quite a hearty soup and very very flavourful. In fact, I would think if not because we are sharing, it would have been too much flavour to finish it all by oneself. The Chilled Soba with Teriyaki Chicken is good except for the chicken. The chicken is really a let-down as it is tough to bite and it is far too salty. The meat just does not seem appetising at all and we left the chicken untouched. The soba is surprisingly flavourful from the sesame dressing, making it very tasty, though not as healthy as it would be if it is sans dressing.

Spending per head: Approximately $8

Fried fish soup Smile Jan 19, 2014

Categories : Malay | Coffeeshop | Halal

Normally, I try to order the sliced fish (non-fried) soup as it is healthier but on a whim, I decided to try the fried fish soup as the owner has just fried a fresh batch of fish. I requested for a milky soup and the soup is really flavourful with the essence of the fish bones and the condensed milk. The soup is not oily as well. The fried fish is delightful too, the fish is fresh and the meat is tender. The fried batter had also absorbed some of the soup which made it even more flavourful. There is really nothing much to fault on this soup. I had mine with the thick bee hoon and it is perfect. I had to stop myself from drinking up all the soup as it is that tasty. Thumbs up! This costs only $4.

Yong Tau Foo Smile Jan 19, 2014
Categories : Food Court

I was quite full from my late breakfast so I decided to just order the yong tau foo items without having the rice/noodle. The minimum order is 5 items if I remember correctly and each item costs $0.70. I ordered the bittergourd (2 pieces), tau kwa, ladyfinger and mushroom. I asked them not to put the fried onions, but if you like it, it does help to increase the fragrance of the yong tau foo. I always liked getting their sweet sauce and the chilli dip to go with the yong tau foo since the yong tau foo by itself is rather bland. Mixing the sweet sauce and chilli makes the yong tau foo especially savoury. The yong tau foo is quite standard since the fish paste taste normal. The fish paste is probably mass produced in a factory and sold to many hawkers. However, this is a good option for you if you would like to eat light, if you choose the non-fried items.
