Having the standard Combination Combo Meal which costs $30++ and comes with a main dish, a side dish, a sub-side dish, salad, rice, miso soup, pickles and shredded cabbage. From the selection of Breaded Pork Loin Cutlet (M), Breaded Pork Tenderloin Cutlet, Breaded Shrimp (2pcs), I select Breaded Pork Tenderloin Cutlet for main, which tastes quite tender and juicy. Next from the selection of Minced Pork Katsu, Asparagus Cheese Roll, and Mini Tederloin, I select Minced Pork Katsu for side. It tastes soft and juicy. Next from the selection of Chicken Katsu, Ume Chicken Roll, and Crab Cream Croquette, I select Ume Chicken Roll for sub-side dish. The ume (pickled plum) give the plain chicken quite a unique taste and an extra crunchy to it. For salad, I am served Chuka Hotat, and Mini Poato Salad. There is free refill for rice, miso soup and cabbage.

Overall it is one of my favourite places for deep fried meat. I will miss it.

Dinner at Saboten will never fail to impress me. At merely $23.90 per set and with free flow fresh lettuces, miso soup and fragrant japanese rice, this is definitely value for money. Service was really friendly and helpful. Restaurant was very comfortable and cooling. The fried pork loin was very tender and juicu. Even the fried prawn ebi is very crispy and chewy. Miso is fragrant and not too salty. Yummy!

As we were in Suntec City, we decided to pop by Saboten at Millenia Walk for dinner during the weekend.

Thus far, we had enjoyed our dining experience (food, ambience, service) at Saboten. Hence, the repeat visits. Another reason why we are back is because of their tonkatsu!

Their tonkatsu (Pork Tenderloin and Pork Loin) are so delicious because only a certain breed of pork is used. In addition, these pigs are grained fed. Barley is added into the feed to make the meat sweeter and tenderer. Saboten uses only mature pigs of more than 180 days of age as they would have higher fat ratio.

I like the environment and ambience at Saboten. It is quiet, clean, spacious and bright. With its Japanese wooden furnishing, it gave a cozy yet classy feel to the restaurant. Although the restaurant was full, we were quite lucky as we did not need to queue and got a table immediately.

As Saboten was having the Oyster Fest, I could not resist the chance of savouring freshly imported oyster from Japan! Hence, I ordered the Oyster and Loin Set $23. The partner on the other hand ordered the Saboten Special Set $25.

Both sets came with free refill of Rice, Miso Soup and Cabbage.

The 'tools' for grinding the sesame seeds - bowl and wooden stick. After the you are done with the grinding, scoop the tonkatsu sauce from the earthen urn into the bowl with grated sesame seeds. Mix well and dipping sauce for your Pork Loin and Pork Tenderloin is ready!

While waiting for your mains to be served. Start off with the cabbage. The fresh cabbage are served cold. Choose either the Yuzu (Citrus) Vinegar or Creamy Sesame or both sauces and mix it with your shredded cabbage. Its very addictive. We easily polished the cabbage off and requested for three refills! Personally, I prefer the Creamy Sesame!

The loin (fried breaded pork loin cutlet) is one of Saboten's signature item. It did not disappoint. The pork loin cutlet coated with crisp golden bread crumbs was tender, soft and slightly moist. The fat to lean meat ratio gave it a melt to mouth sensation. It was a joy savoring it, sinfully delicious. Best eaten when it is warm.

As for the Saboten Special Set $25, consisted of Pickled Vegetable, Rice, Miso Soup, Breaded Shrimp, Mini Pork Tenderloin, Half-size Pork Loin and Crab Cream Croquette. If you want to try a little of everything, this would be the set to order.

The Pork Tenderloin was darker in colour (slightly pinkish) compared to the Pork Loin. Although it had lesser fat, it was surprisingly soft. The long Breaded Shrimp was fresh. Its meat was firm and succulent.

As usual, the norm here is to ended of the meal with a scoop of Matcha (green tea) Ice Cream. Milky with a mild sweet yet bitter green tea taste.

Another great meal at Saboten! Although the items were deep fried, the chef perfected the heat and timing. Each piece was deep fried perfectly and were not oily. Service was good too. I has been since I encountered such good service. The staff promptly refilled our hot green tea (without us requesting) and also cabbage. I will certainly be back for more!

Saboten at City Hall serves up quite decent tempura. We ordered the shrimp tempura with pork. The shrimp itself was fried till a crispy golden brown and thoroughly delicious. The batter was not too thick, unlike places that do not do a good tempura. As for the pork tonkatsu, it was delicious because the pork meat was not very hard and the oil was well drained which made the sinful meal feel less sinful.

The cabbages were very fresh and finely chopped, and you get to choose between sesame sauce or orange peel sauce to go with them. I tried both and love the sesame sauce. I always liked the sesame sauce, that could easily be bought as supermarkets, although they can be quite fattening!
Free flow cabbage and I took many servings of it!

Saboten Special Set - A small pork tenderloin, pork loin, fried ebi, crab cream croquette

I prefer the tenderloin. The loin is slightly drier.
The crumbs were fried to perfection. Crispy and light, won't feel gelat.
I LOVE THE CRAB CREAM CROQUETTE.

Set meal comes with Matcha Ice Cream. It tastes quite ordinary, nothing much to rave about.

The menu was not very extensive. You probably won't be there often unless you are dying to have some tonkatsu. It was a pretty enjoyable meal and cabbages never tasted so yummy before. Just typing about the crab cream croquette makes me hungry.

The free flow cabbage, soup and rice is pretty attractive. I enjoyed the cabbage and miso soup though they were not extraordinarily tasty. The soup has plenty of ingredients! We had several servings of them (:
The staff were very attentive and took initiative to ask if we needed to top up our veg/soup even when we did not request.

This is my 2nd visit to Saboten, my first visit was slightly more 2 years ago (before I started FoodieFC). My impression of Saboten was good then, I remembered how addictive the salads were and also how good their Tonkatsu was. The main reason why I did not make subsequent visits was because of the location. I seldom venture to Parco Marina Bay. Their other branch is at Changi Airport, which I also seldom venture to.

Japanese wooden furnishing bright cozy restaurant .

I ordered their signature Loin Katsu Set (L) which cost $23. It consisted of free flow of cabbage, rice and miso soup, breaded pork loin cutlet and ice cream.

A bowl of sesame seeds with a wooden stick. Customers will need to grind the sesame seeds themselves with the wooden stick. After the seeds are finely grated, scoop the tonkatsu sauce from an earthen urn on the table into the bowl with grated sesame seeds. It will be a perfect dip for the tonkatsu (fried pork loin cutled).

As mentioned earlier, each set comes with free flow of shredded cabbage. The fresh cabbages are best eaten with either the Creamy Sesame or Yuzu (Citrus) Vinegar dressing. Highly addictive and tasty combination that caused me to indulge endlessly.

The main star of the night was (of course) the Fried Breaded Pork Loin Cutlet. The grain-fed pork loin cutlet was tender and soft, coated with crispy golden bread crumbs. A plus point was that it was not greasy. Certainly delish!

It was accompanied with free flow of rice and miso soup.

The meal ended off with a Matcha (green tea) Ice Cream. It was milky with a mild sweet yet bitter green tea taste that concluded this meal with a sweet ending.

This deep fried items set meal is one of my favourite order from Saboten Japanese restaurant. The ranges are really alot which includes the deep fried prawn, pork cutlet and chicken cutlet. All are equally crispy, juicy, fresh and not too oily. Their japanese rice is also very fragrant and the best part is it is free flow and also include free flow of cabbages and miso soup as well. Really enjoyable and filling.

Saboten is probably one of my favourite Japanese joint whenever I have craving for Japanese food. I like their tonkatsu. Lately I wished the branch at City Hall and ordered the new item on their menu. I tried their Mix Chicken Katsu. The plate of Katsu has deep fried Chicken with Avocado, deep fried chicked katsu and deep fried potato. I enjoyed the combination of chicken and avocado. The breaded batter was also very nice and crispy.

The cabbage was the first to be served. I heard that the cabbages were stored in the freezer and were sliced while still frozen. This is probably why the sweetness and freshness of the cabbages were retained. Since it's free flow, we did not hesitate to ask for top ups. It tasted really good. Tried the sesame sauce but didn't quite like it. I still like the yuzu vinegar sauce better.

Each of us are given a small bowl of sesame seeds where we are suppose to grind down. I remembered that I used to do that in another Japanese restaurant that sells ramen. This is definitely the first time I had to grind my own sesame for rice. Quite interesting though.

The crust is really not greasy at all and it is very crisp and just very perfect. I didnt get the oily feeling in my mouth at all. The sauce for the katsu also brings out the taste of the katsu even more. I will definitely be back here again to try their other fried variations set meals.

“The popular chain restaurant, started in 1963 in Tokyo’s Shinjuku neighbourhood, specialises in tonkatsu, or Japanese deep- fried breaded pork cutlet. Its non-greasy cutlet is sold at 80 restaurants in Japan and 62 shops in Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Mr Shinya Ozaku, 36, a manager with Tonkatsu Shinjuku Saboten, says the tonkatsu is crispy but not oily because it is fried in palm oil. A chef from one of its outlets in Japan will be here to train the cooks for a few months until they master the skill of frying non-greasy tonkatsu. And Mr Ozaku, who has been with the restaurant group for 13 years, will oversee the training of its service staff and the opening of the restaurant.” Extracted from http://www.soshiok.com/article/11064

Three main points why I love Saboten:

1) Cabbage

A generous serving of chilled, thinly shredded cabbage comes with the deep fried food. Cabbage never tastes as good as these. The servers did not twitch their eyelids nor show any expression of dislike when we asked for refills; refill of cabbage is foc. I think our cabbage was refilled 3 or 4 times.

It is light to eat on its own and we can add yuzu sauce or creamy sesame or tonkatsu sauce to it ;)

2) Sauces

A refreshing vinegar- based yuzu sauce or creamy sesame dressing are available as dressing for the cabbage. One can purchase these sauces in most of the supermarkets. I think we almost whipped out a full-sized yuzu sauce ;p

“Another reason its fried cutlet stands apart from the competition is its home-made tonkatsu sauce. The sauce is made from scratch using a generous amount of fruits and vegetables so our version is sweeter than what you get at other restaurants even though we do not add any sugar. The sweetness is natural.” Extracted from http://www.soshiok.com/article/11064

3) Texture and taste of cutlets

The deep fried foods are well-fried to crispness and yet non-greasy as palm oil is used. They tasted even better when dipped in the tonkatsu sauce. There is no nauseous feeling even we dipped the food with lots of tonkatsu sauce. Simply good!

The bread crumbs that coated the cutlet ought to be of high quality as there is no ‘prickly pain’ in our mouths after eating.

The variety of their menu is rather limited compared to Tonkinchi. But nevertheless, this shows that the restaurant can focus on its specialties and hopefully the standard of food remains no matter how many times we visit it

We initially wanted to try its katsu sandwich but it is only available during tea-time. Well, we ought to set some time to try this katsu sandwich which is highly raved.
