Overall, this joint is reasonably priced for the large variety of food and great quality. Service is ok but when the restaurant is busy they might forget your orders. However, the staffs are generally prompt and courteous. Definitely worth going!

The chicken soup tasted a bit bland at the beginning, but after awhile when u have put in the steamboat ingredients, the soup become more sweet and tasty. My favorite among the steamboat is surprisingly their dessert, especially the water chestnut cake! It is not too sweet but infused with a nice pinch of water chestnut taste. Their fried nian gao is awesome too. Try their mantou dip with condensed milk too! You will not regret it!

The location was strange.

Tanglin shopping centre. I walked over from Tanglin Mall, having got the location mixed up.

It's my first time here.

There's a hotpot place here? Seriously?

With a silly friend who kept scaring me about the shady bars in this place.

The food here was good. A wide variety on the ala carte order list.

Some dishes were a one time complementary order.

And all of them were good.

A bubbly pot of magic.

We liked it.

There were add on cost options of differing soup bases but we just took the regular options and were more than happy with it

The manager back in 2001 told us that to eat the steamboat, we have to mix all 4 sauces together. We remembered till now. Everytime we visit the restaurant, we will delligently remember the sauce.

The meal ended with dessert. We have choices of ice cream and mixed fruits to choose from. All of us chose mixed fruits. We really couldn't stuff in anymore ice cream into our stomach and mixed fruits seems to be the healthier and lighter choice.

As for drinks, we normally go for the 8 treasure tea (cold) coz it's refillable. Only change now is that they have started charging $1 for plain water. It used to be free. Other than that, the standard still remains and we will definitely go back for more of our gatherings.

I guessed that this is my 5th visit to the restaurant. I really disappointed that we were not being greeted by the service crew at the door and then led in to a table in the center of the restaurant. It wasn't busy as we saw only 3 other tables occupied.

We were being recommended to order the signature Eight Treasure Tea. It was fragrant and was a very good thirst quencher.

While waiting for the soup, the waitress assist us to prepare the sauces and I like the sauces they mix with.

We had chosen traditional chicken broth and Szechuan mala as our soup base from the wide selection of others such as chicken and preserved vegetable. The chicken soup base was excellent.

A standard serving of Meat, Chives Dumpling and Xiao Long Bao.

A few good variety of the food items that we ordered were the fish paste, carp fish fillet, fillet of pork and bai ling mushrooms. Unfortunately, they short of crabs, slices of salmon and abalone because I prefer crabs as the seafood. Therefore, we ordered the fresh prawns on a stick, fu zhou fishballs, thinly sliced beef and cockles.

The desserts here are good as well. There's a default desserts like fried niangao with icing sugar, water chestnut cake and fried mantou with a condensed milk dipping sauce. My girlfriend chose the signature Eight Treasure "Black Rice", whereas I chose ice cream rather than fruit cocktail.

Lastly, I really hope that this restaurant can keep up the good job and invent new food such as Lamp Chop so that it will definitely a place for us to come back to!

Conclusion: If you like good quality affordable steamboat in a comfortable environment with great service, this is the place for you. Although it may not be the cheapest, it's an a la carte buffet with really good quality ingredients and a wide variety of them for the food too.

The Magic of ChongQing Hot Pot offers a wide range of the typical steamboat ingredients. Each ingredient was very fresh and well-prepared. A few items to point out were the fish paste, carp fish fillet, fillet of pork and bai ling mushrooms. The thin layer of fish paste was very fresh, absolutely no tinged of fishiness. We ordered the "yuan-yang" steamboat, Ma La (spicy) and Chicken soup with Preserved vegetables. The chicken soup was awesome! I'm usually a fan of spicy soup base but Chong Qing's chicken soup with preserved veg really won me over. Its a must try if you are visiting them.

The interesting part of their buffet was that they served cooked food such as Xiao Long Baos, Fried Dumpling and sweet desserts. You don't have to worry about the cooked food as they have a "schedule" to serve you the kind of food at different time. For instance, about 10-15 mins after you started, they would serve you the cooked food such as Xiao Long Bao and after about 30 min into your dinner, they would serve the sweet desserts. Apparently, this is the way how the original Chong Qing Ma La steamboat is supposed to be served.

Oh and if you are having the Ma LA soup base, do order their signature Ba Bao Tea. Very refreshing. All the ingredients served were very fresh. The sliced pork, pork dumplings with chives and prawns were really good.
They also have a special sauce for the food. You are supposed to mix all the 4 types of sauces found on the table. It comprises of sesame oil, peanut sauce, chilli paste and a special light soya sauce.

Frankly, I do not know how to appreciate their hot spicy soup(ma la) cos I always find it too spicy and you may wonder why I still come here for the steamboat. Actually is their chicken soup that is really tasty and often I will get a tablespoon of the spicy soup and mix into the bowl of chicken soup and it tastes good.I love their sliced fish most and get the kick out of it by scraping it from the plate and cooking it, fun. Normally the staff will come to your rescue to help you with this dish

I find one interesting item which is the luncheon meat, it goes well with the soup. Overall their food is fresh and have no complain so far.
I love their complimentry side dishes, the xiao long pau, the chestnut kueh, the man tou with condensed milk and etc. Like their ambience here too, very nostalgia and the decor is as though in a movie set ...Dragon Inn.

But if you want something fancier, the servers will be delighted (or slightly pushy) to recommend some, with an additional S$12 cost or more.

Food:
Slightly different from those Bugis steamboat places (eg. you wouldn't find crabs or 'lala' on the buffet list) but there will be starters / side dishes / desserts included, eg. xiao long bao, fried spring rolls, waterchestnut kueh and 8 treasure sweet porridge (slight similarity to buloh hitam).

Service:
We called in advance and the manager gave us a room, as our group was rather big (7person), which was a good thing, as the sitting area outside was rather squeezy.
Aside from looking and acting grouchy, our server was great. She helped us with the orders, estimated the quantity to serve and even estimated when we'll stop eating.

The place was filled with diners, even on a weeknight (Wed). So do make reservations before heading down.

I've always had very low expectations for steamboats. Not that I don't enjoy it but had always been a rather straightforward experience, grab / drop / cook / eat. And as said above, with that low of a expectation and it was my first visit to The Magic of Chongqing Hot Pot, it was surprisingly an enjoyable one.

Just love the soup and sides

Hope to revisit it soon.
