Cool new spot at Marina Square
Lady M
2013-10-22
Lady M is situated near the entrance of the mall, and the all white cafe is indeed very eye-catching. Lady M, unlike its name, is a place not only for the ladies but anyone who enjoys mille crepe cakes or cakes over a pot of tea. And that was what I did. We ordered the signature vanilla mille-crepe cake and the very creative checkers cake (resembles a checkerboard of vanilla and chocolate sponge cake). The vanilla mille-crepe does not disappoint. In every bite, you taste the fresh vanilla cream sandwiched in those layers of crepe. Likewise, the checkers cake's dark chocolate ganache enveloping the vanilla/chocolate sponge cakes is all rich and intense. Both cakes are so rich in cream that they fill you up very quickly. Go for a pot of tea and take sips between each bite to enjoy a really good Lady M afternoon tea.…查看更多

Cosy cafe with affordable prices and average food
老甜婆
2013-10-22
Located close to Outram Park MRT, this cafe offers a selection of local delights (e.g. laksa, noodle soup, black sesame paste, barley with ginko dessert) at friendly prices (under $10). It has a comfortable setting for dine-in. We ordered the laksa and mango pomelo dessert. The laksa tasted average, considering that we could get tastier versions at cheaper prices. Sugar Granny cafe is better known for its desserts such as the mango sago pomelo. However, in this case, I found it less flavourful as I would have expected. Considering the affordable prices and comfortable cafe setting, I wouldn't mind dropping by for a quick dinner fix in the area. There is definitely room for improvement in terms of the food.…查看更多

Fantastic green tea frappe!
J.Co Donuts & Coffee
2013-10-22
Besides donuts and coffee, J.Co does have something else on the menu to boast of. For non-coffee drinkers or green tea lovers, do try the J.Co Green Tea Frappe. Made from blended Matcha green tea, ice and milk, it is indeed a surprise to find that J.Co's version of the green tea frappe ($6) does make the mark! Besides enjoying your cup of green tea frappe, the J.Co outlet at Tampines 1 does provide a very cosy space and environment for a read or a chat in small groups. However, there is some room for improvement in terms of the service (since the ordering and collection points are different) and they do mix up your preferences e.g. with whipped cream or without. Do a check with the staff to make sure you get what you order.…查看更多

Good quality pastries at affordable prices
東坡茶室
2013-10-22
A vintage style cafe well hidden at Arab street, this place is adorned with many posters and items from the older days in Singapore. Dong Po Colonial cafe is known to sell traditional pastries using recipes from 1950s and 1960s. Though I must say I have no idea what cakes from 1950/1960s looked like, the cupcakes and pastries in the display counter look simple enough and nothing too fancy like the cupcakes we see today. I packed a box of pastries for takeaway and they include chocolate twirl cupcake, pineapple tart, almond macaroon tart and the coconut tart. Each item costs between $1.70 - $1.90.I was most pleased with the chocolate twirl cupcake, considering that it looks like a simple cupcake with chocolate cream topping. The chocolate twirl topping has a very intense chocolate flavour and the cupcake is soft and fluffy, making this a very worthy buy. Next, the pineapple tart comes in the shape of a boat. The pineapple filling tastes fresh and tangy and comparable to those quality pineapple tarts that we can get during Chinese New Year season. It would be fantastic if they do make and sell these in bottles for festive and non-festive seasons, though the price of each piece is not cheap. The almond macaroon tart looks like a smooth macaroon shell in a tart. It does taste of almond and not too sweet as I would expect from a macaroon. The coconut nut tart is baked to a crispy golden brown tart and the filling is soft and chewy. In all, I am pleased to find such a traditional bakery cafe with quality pastries at affordable prices and I wouldn't mind coming back again to do a takeaway of their unique and yummy pastries.…查看更多

Fantastic pies!
Windowsill Pies
2013-08-22
I got to know about Windowsill pies via Savour (a gastronomy event) where I bought my first two Windowsill pies - Grasshopper and Strawberry Lemon. Both pies were awesome leaving me wanting for more. Hence, I had my second serving at the shop itself located at Horne Road, not far away from Lavender MRT. You can spot the pie shop from its fairy tale themed shopfront. Stepping into the shop (or as they put it 'the woods'), you can choose to be seated near the entrance (next to the pretty looking window sills) or cuddle up to the giant teddy bear which is seated under the tree. There is a range of delectable looking pies ($7.50-$8.50) to choose from and teas to go along with the pies. We ordered the S'mores and Coconut lime vodka pies which are some of the more popular pies in the shop. S'mores is a dense chocolate pie with marshmallows and is definitely a hit with chocolate lovers and sweet taste buds. Coconut lime vodka , like the strawberry lemon pie, has a tangy citrus flavour with vodka jelly. We also ordered a pot of tea to go along with the pies. We definitely enjoyed the pies at Windowsill Pies and will come back for more.…查看更多

Beach Road outlet - quiet place with decent food
8度空間
2013-08-22
8 degrees taiwanese bistro is a themed bistro serving Taiwanese street snacks and dishes. The bistro is decorated with a few Jay Chou posters (just as its name was also the song title of Jay Chou's song). We were disappointed that the beach road outlet did not have a live band playing on the 2nd floor (which we read about on its Facebook page) and it only started playing Jay Chou songs (the bistro is known for playing his songs continuously) halfway through our dinner. In terms of food, we were quite pleased with the reasonable price and waiting time for the food to be served. We had the oyster mee sua ($5.80). If you are looking for the exact taste that you get from Shilin Taiwan Street Snacks, I would say that this is quite different. The noodles were slightly thicker and the soup base was equally rich but tasted less salty than what you would get from Shilin. However, the oysters do come in reasonably big size and that is fair value for the price, plus this is a dine-in setting so you get to sit down to enjoy your meal. We ordered the mango shaved ice with strawberry ($6.80) and the vanilla shaved ice with grass jelly, red beans & sweet potato/yam balls ($7.80). We loved them both. The mango shaved ice is sweet but complemented by the slightly sour strawberry slices. Don't be deceived by the white and bland looking vanilla ice as the ingredients under the shaved ice is quite a mouthful and is definitely yummy too. Taiwanese bubble tea and aiyu jelly tea are also available in the menu.…查看更多

Good quality hot chocolate
DeConti Caffe & Gelato
2013-08-22
DeConti Caffee & Gelato is a newly opened cafe at Tampines 1. On my first visit, I ordered a cup of Italian hot chocolate and was pleasantly surprised to find such thick and rich hot chocolate in the heartland. As I placed the tea spoon into the cup, I can see a fine layer of crust or crystalised chocolate breaking away. This is hot thick the hot chocolate is, and just the way I like my hot chocolate (not too much milk)! Thumbs up and I'm definitely going back to get my hot chocolate fix anytime soon!My medium size cup of hot chocolate costs $6.50 but I would consider this a good price for the premium quality. The regular size looks far too small to be able to enjoy the taste. The outlet at Tampines 1 is rather small in size though so come during non-peak hours if you would prefer to dine with less crowd. The outlet also serve coffees, croissants and gelatos. Do also expect that this is pretty much like a self-service outlet (collect your own drinks when they are ready). …查看更多

Liquid nitrogen ice cream in the heartland
Just Like It
2013-08-22
Just when the market is becoming saturated with gelato stores, 'Just Like It' hits our shore and redefines ice cream in a truly revolutionary way (as the store's tag line puts it 'A Revolutionary F & B!'). The interesting part of the dining experience is watching the servers clad in white lab coats, pouring in a flask of ingredient (the flask is what you would have probably seen in a chemistry class) into the mixer and adding in liquid nitrogen (which comes out with thick white smoke), resulting in several seconds of fog while the ice cream hardens. I had the chill mint chocolate flavour which is rather light in taste. The price of a scoop of regular size ice cream ranges from $5.90-$6.90. It costs $5.90 for chill mint chocolate or $6.90 for the signature flavours like Durian or New Popcorn. There is nothing to rave about the taste though I will consider going back a second time to watch the fun ice cream making process all over again.…查看更多

Good quality food and great prices for lunch
Table Manners
2013-07-09
Table Manners is a good choice if you are looking for a place for lunch. Its location at Changi City point means there will be less crowd than the usual lunch spots in the city area and the prices are reasonable for good quality food. Quite impressed with the baked salmon and truffle fries as they were cooked to perfection and tasted exactly how they should be. The server did share with us about the salmon being a little under cooked under the impression of another customer upon our order but we were glad that we went ahead with the order as it was nicely done, and not at all under cooked, in our opinion. The other sides (asparagus with bacon, sauteed mushrooms, caesar salad) were great as well. The cajun chicken leg, being a recommended dish on the menu, was rather tasty as well but required some effort tearing the meat from the bone. If there was an option of having a boneless cajun chicken, it would be just awesome. The great thing is that you are able to customise to your likes and budget for the lunches. For the above, it costed $13.50++ each for 2 fiber and 1 protein dishes in a plate. Reasonable for the quality of food that we had savoured. I would definitely consider to go back for lunch again soon.…查看更多

Pretty decor and interior
Fullhouse Cafe
2012-10-30
Adorned with pretty decorations, it is no wonder that this cafe makes a great choice to gather your girl buddies over a meal and perhaps do some shopping in the cafe itself. Alfredo spaghetti ($17.90++) served with olive oil and shitake mushroom was tasty but somewhat a little too spicy to the taste. Al-funghi spaghetti ($14.90++) with a butter base makes a more decent dish than the former. It makes sense to check with the service staff on the level of spiciness before you order. Or order the value-for-money glass of cold iced lemon tea ($4.90++) to accompany the meal as it comes in a decent size for the price.Though there is less reason to rave about the food here, there is enough reason for you to come by and take a look at the pretty interior of the cafe. There is also a small boutique shop in the cafe selling clothes and accessories, making it a good after-dinner activity with your girl buddies.…查看更多

Cakes that are definitely worth a try
Kooka Cafe
2012-09-05
Kooka Cafe is a small cosy cafe hidden amongst the shophouses on Purvis street. Despite its low profile in the local cafe scene, it is definitely a cafe worth going for the delicious cakes baked by the Australian co-owner herself. The carrot cake is definitely worth trying. It is moist and soft, with added flavour from the walnuts and nicely topped with a sweet cream cheese frosting. The orange almond cake is equally good. It is served warm and moist, comes with a nutty almond taste and a nice orange fragrance. The cakes cost between $6-$7 (subject to 7% GST) and goes perfectly well with a hot cup of coffee/tea. What's even better? For $1.50+, you can already satisfy your sweet tooth with a slice of lamington, an Australian specialty sponge cake coated in chocolate frosting and covered in coconut shavings. The cafe itself also has a very laid-back and relaxed atmosphere, ideal for catching up with a few friends over some cakes and drinks.…查看更多

Refreshing gelato flavours to savour
Casa Italia
2012-08-11
Thank goodness for gelato, it makes the sweltering weather in Singapore a lot more bearable. Parked on the first level of Bugis+ which is located just across Bugis Village, you can easily grab your cup of heat-defying potion after shopping under the hot sun. Seriously, who can resist ice cream particularly during this hot weather season? The wide array of gelato flavours is certainly a feast for the eyes. Fortunately, you get to taste them too. The friendly servers are happy to provide you with sample tasting spoons of the flavours that caught your eyes. They offer a pretty good selection of gelatos too (green tea, rocher, baileys, passionfruit, mango, forest berries and many more). If you prefer something less heavy/creamy, you will enjoy the fruit flavours which are pretty refreshing to the taste. The only thing you might complain is the serving size of the gelato cup. Well, it's good that they limit your calories intake too. What I like about this particular outlet is that they have a dining/seating area too. Now, you can sit down and indulge in your cup of gelato.…查看更多

Great variety at reasonable price
争鮮回転寿司
2012-08-06
At S$1.50 (excluding prevailing taxes) per plate, there is no wonder why people are queuing up outside the restaurant despite the waiting time. For budget-conscious diners, this is no doubt a perfect place for you to eat to your heart's and stomach's content without costing a bomb. At its very affordable price, you can find a pretty amazing variety serving the usual favourites like salmon/tuna sashimi, scallops, prawns, different varieties of sushi and maki, and many more. What's more? If you are looking for desserts to sweeten your palate after those savouries, mango pudding and cheesecakes are also available on the conveyor belt. The only limiting factor to stop you from feasting is the 50-minute time frame imposed for each dining table (so that more people have the chance to dine in too). But, that is still no excuse for you not to drop by to savour the great variety.…查看更多

Nice and quiet location for a quick bite
7Kickstart Museum Cafe
2012-08-06
Though the name of the cafe is quite a mouthful to remember, 7 KICKstart BREWiches is located conveniently across the Substation along Armenian Street. Nestled amongst the heritage districts, it is one of the rare peaceful spots you can find in the bustling City Hall. For that, it makes a good spot for anyone looking for a quiet place to chill out on an afternoon. As its name suggests, the cafe is probably best known for its coffee brews and sandwiches. The cafe is also offering set lunches at S$12 which comes with a main dish, a soup and ice lemon tea. I gave my thumbs up for the iced lemon tea which carried a strong lemon fragrance in it, not resembling anything from a canned drink. The main dish was a banana leaf rice with fish. The presentation of the dish was pretty unusual. It was served with quite a generous serving of cucumbers, unfortunately not very much to our liking. The cajun chicken sandwich was more commendable in taste and portion. The hazelnut latte did taste very much like a latte with minimal taste of hazelnut. There is definitely room for improvement in terms of food and service but it still deserves dropping in for a quick bite if you are in the area and wish to avoid the crowd.…查看更多
