Mochi Overload Cry Aug 05, 2015
Categories : Japanese | Coffeeshop | Desserts and Cakes

Located just 2-3 minutes away from Chinatown mrt is Oyoge Taiyaki. I had passed by this place several times and noted that they didn't have a dining area. So I decided to pop by only during a weekend dinner time to try it.

They have lots of flavours to try, it's basically a paste that is placed into a mochi that is in a shape of a fish. Instead of a pancake, they use a mochi.

They also sell ice creams and croissant taiyaki.

When I ordered my azuki (red bean) taiyaki, I was told to wait 10 minutes.

I watched them bake my taiyaki and they didn't waste any time cooling it down, and handed it straight to me, piping hot. The staff gave the taiyaki to me with easily 4-5 baking paper and both of us had trouble holding it.

It does look cute and it is a decent size. But you can see the azuki only fills up not more than 1/4 of the fish. The rest of the mochi was so chewy and sticky. It just stuck to the paper. The weather at 6pm, was still super hot and to eat this super hot mochi in this weather was bad.

The azuki bean paste was too sweet for my liking and I ended up tossing half of it away and heading to the nearest convenience stall to grab a cold drink to cool off.

Located right in front of Challenger, BHG on the the third floor is Dolce Tokyo, it is quite a large unit and literally right above from Miam Miam, so I'm sure most of the patrons at Dolce Tokyo/Miam Miam might have to dilema of which restaurant to go to, as both serve similar items, except for the souffles which only Miam Miam serves.

The tables are widely spaced and Dolce Tokyo can accomodate big groups, however if you do make a reservation, they expect the entire party to be present within 5 minutes of your reservation time. Quite a fussy restaurant policy, but nonetheless we still got our table for 8.

Each table has a button which you can buzz for service. Each time we buzzed for service, the staff came instantly, which was great. Especially since we were a big group and we made our orders all at different times.

Dolce Tokyo has a large menu that can cater to a variety of taste buds. From curry rice, pasta, to western food and matcha and azuki drinks.

They also have a wide variety of parfait, dessert bentos and so on. They can cater to the youngsters who have a sweet tooth. However the prices are quite steep, but it is awesome to have a friend who is an MOF member which entitles you to 10% off.

1. Salmon Ikura Pasta $16.80++
With tomato cream sauce

With tomato cream sauce

Upon ordering a pasta, the staff will ask you what sauce would you like, there's tomato, cream, garlic etc. I asked the staff for her recommendations and she said try the tomato cream which I did. And I later regretted as the sauce was too salty and it made the pasta extremely gerlat. I barely finished half of the plate.
Fresh looking ikura!

Fresh looking ikura!

The ikura however, looked and tasted fresh which was the highlight of the dish!

2. Pork Katsu Curry Rice $19 ++

The pork katsu was very crispy and delicious. I love the curry sauce here at Dolce Tokyo. I wouldn't say this is a MUST-TRY at Dolce Tokyo, but it was probably the best dish that I tried that day.

3. Red Matcha Latte Deluxe $9.90++

For the price you are paying for this drink, you would expect something awesome but nope, it tasted very bland and there tiny cubes of jelly. Even the matcha latte at Pie Face at $4.50 tastes so much better than this. I would rather go to Gong Cha and order a green tea with azuki beans for 1/3 the price of this. This was very disappointing.

4. Azuki Latte with Gelato $8.80++

The matcha latte was disappointing and so was this. It tasted like water before the ice cream melted and disolved into the drink. But after the ice cream melted, there was a strange buttery after taste after every sip of the drink. I think it's because of the commerically made vanilla ice cream.

The smoked salmon in this baked rice was super salty and the tomato sauce underneath the layer of cheese was also super salty.

On the bright side, the service staff were attentive and friendly, they were the reason I had an enjoyable experience despite the salty food and tasteless and overpriced drinks.

Coffee Shop Thai Food Cry Jun 29, 2015
Categories : Thai | Restaurant

I've driven by this place several times and seen the queues on the weekends. I tried to make a telephone reservation only to be told, "Just come and queue la, about 20 minutes can get table.."

So on the day before Father's day I came down to queue, I reached about 7pm and true enough, I was told the waiting time was about 20 minutes. In line, you are handed a menu to pick the dishes you want after which a staff will come to pen down your order whilst you wait for your table.

Looking through their menu, they have a wide range of Appetizers, Salad, Soup, Curry, Seafood, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Vegetables, Rice, Noodles, Desserts and Drinks. All the prices are NETT which makes the food here so affordable.

The dining area is non air conditioned, but it can be quite airy during the evenings. After we were ushered to our seat, within a few minutes, our dishes started arriving one by one. I guess that's the plus point of ordering, while you're waiting in line!

1. Chicken in Pandan Leaf $6
The aroma was so good! I had high hopes for this

The aroma was so good! I had high hopes for this

I had high hopes for this dish, as I had seen several tables order this and I miss eating this in Thailand.

The sauce was sweet and not spicy, the chicken smelt so good, I couldn't wait to tuck in!
Bits of meat clumped together

Bits of meat clumped together

After I had unwrapped the leaf, I realized that it wasn't one piece of chicken. It looked like chunks of chicken meat with some flour/doughy filler to "glue" the pieces of chicken together. Definitely not what I was expecting to eat, and probably a "cost-cutting" technique they use. The meat was well seasoned but the flour in between the meat threw me off!

2. Beef Kway Teow Soup $4

Having eaten at Jai Thai many times and loving their beef kway teow soup, I decided to try the same dish here. Another disappointment as the beef here are just tiny strings of minced beef, rather than actual beef cubes. For the same price, and air conditioning, I would rather eat at clover way. The soup was abit bland and needed some more seasoning as well.

3. Pad Thai $4

My personal favourite dish and this restaurant's saving grace. Cooked exactly the same way I had eaten at a wet market in Pattaya, the wok hei here was spot on! Yes it was drenched in oil, but the flavours of this dish is so good, I didn't mind the extra calories. This is a must order at Nakhon!

4. Olive Fried Rice $6

The portion here is too huge for any one man to finish. The rice was subtly flavoured with olive and it wasn't too oily. If you want a healthier choice instead of pineapple fried rice, this is it.

5. Asparagus $6

The asparagus was cooked well and it was soft. The sauce was salty and it went well with the bland vegetables.

6. Oatmeal Prawn $12

You get 6 crunchy and big prawns cooked in oatmeal, it was okay. But for $12, I realized we should've spent it on something else.

7. Green Curry with Beef $8

Probably one of the worst green curry I have eaten, the colour looked off and it didn't have the distinctive green curry flavour. In the bowl, there were tiny strips of beef again, exactly the same as the beef kway teow soup.

8. Red Ruby $3

Everyone at the table loved the red ruby, decorated with a slice of a jack fruit on top, there were tons of crunchy red ruby and the coconut milk was just right. It had a good level of "lemak" taste.

A very cooling dessert to end off the day.

Here is our family feast for 4 people. There were hits and misses, sadly mostly misses. Maybe we have to come back and try other dishes, because this coffee shop thai restaurant must be doing something right to have 7 outlets and non stop queues on weekends.

Fried noodles with chicken Cry Jun 28, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Food Court

Located at the fast food canteen is this simple fried noodles + your choice of side dish e-canteen stall. It normally has a very long queue from 12-1pm. After 1pm, the queue disappears and there's still tons of food to order.

1. Set 1 Noodles + chicken wing + egg $2

Sadly, because it was already 130pm, I'm guessing that this chicken wing was fried over an hour ago and the chicken skin wasn't crispy. It was very doughy, almost reminded me of some overnight donuts.

The noodles weren't very flavourful, but I'm glad the aunty asked if I wanted the curry gravy. Without the curry gravy, this would've been too dry and I wouldn't have eaten it at all. The portions of the noodles was huge and enough to share between 2 or more!!

The egg tasted decent, it was the only good item on the plate. Now, I'm curious as to why there's always a long queue here during lunch hours.

My group of girlfriends, a total party size of 8 decided to check out Chapter 55 at hipster land. So I called in to make a reservation, but an automated voice answering machine told me I would receive a text message to complete the reservation, which I did. It was a short URL to make a reservation via Chope. However on Chope, I could only select a maximum party size of 6. So in the comments I asked for 2 more seats.

A few hours later I got a call saying that their cafe's reservation policy requires each person to spend at least $25 and order a main course. Waffles which are priced $18.50+ with 2 scoops of ice cream are not considered a main course. Even the staff encouraged me to walk in. This is ridiculous. So we decided to walk in, and the food better be worth the effort!

Despite the phone call, I was delighted to be greeted by the beautiful ice cream display!

And I pinched myself to be sure I wasn't dreaming when I saw the $23 per pint price tag. Okay, let's see if their ice cream is really twice as good as other competitors, to be priced this high.

The interior has a very homely, retro feel to it, the lighting isn't instagram's best friend. You will have to improvise or try and get a table by the windows.

1. Beef Bolognese Cheese Fries $15+

With truffle tries price at $14, we decided to try something else. Sadly, this dish wasn't what we expected, even though there is supposedly cheese in the sauce. We couldn't taste any. It was a plate of very soggy fries, with a very under seasoned beef bolognese sauce.

2. Squid Ink Risotto $25+

Tasted cheesy and I felt gerlat very quickly. This is the first plate of Risotto that I didn't like, I am normally a huge fan of Risotto.

It's waffle time! Despite the unsatisfying experience with the main courses, I was so certain the highly instagrammable waffles with ice cream would be the highlight of my night!

3. Waffles with Mao shan wang durian and belgian chocolate $18.50+

I liked that the durian ice cream colour wasn't overly yellow, which a lot of ice cream parlours, normally add yellow colouring to, it didn't smell very fragrant but it tasted good. I liked the durian ice cream. The belgian chocolate tasted okay, it didn't leave an impression for me. The waffles, which I was looking forward to, tasted ok, I've definitely had better waffles in the surrounding area.

4. Waffles with Pulut Hitam and Pistachio $18.50+

The only redeeming factor that Chapter 55 had for me tonight, was the Pulut Hitam ice cream, which I truly enjoyed. However not all the girls at my table liked it. It wasn't displayed, but they had it in the freezer. You could bite into the black rice bits in the ice cream. It a legit, pulut hitam ice cream! The Pistachio was also a memorable ice cream flavour. You can distinctively taste the pistachio.

The bill for 6 girls

The bill for 6 girls

The bill for 6 girls and we weren't very big eaters, so asking all 6 of us to order a main course each isn't the wisest cafe policy, even from a business stand point.

The staff weren't well organized and took a long while to clear our table. The first staff cleared one plate, and a male staff cleared 2 more plates. We were done with all our plates and when the waffles came, we still had half a table worth of dirty plates. Only after the second waffle came to our table, did another male staff who served us the waffles, clear the rest of the dirty dishes.

The Chinese local lady at the cashier who spoke mandarin was very friendly and polite. I had higher hopes for their ice cream and waffles with such a high price tag on each plate.

On the bright side, they have BOGO weekday lunch offers.
