Hosted in the cozy setting in Marina Square, a couple of bloggers chilled out to lovely gelatos on a lovely Sunday in April, at Alfero Gelato.

About Alfero Gelato:

Alfero Artisan Gelato is prepared with a mixture of high quality ingredients – milk, cream, sugar, eggs, fruits, chocolate, nuts, etc. with a high nutritional value. Italian gelato contains less fat than ice cream, has less incorporated air and is served at a higher temperature (-11 degree Celsius). Our gelato provides a greater flavour experience because there is less fat that coats the tongue, more flavour per spoonful (due to less air), and the taste buds are more alive since the temperature is not so cold as to numb the sensitivity. The lower fat content also means fewer calories to burn.

Alfero Gelato is one of the 16 finalists in the Gelato World Tour's best gelato flavour competition, and that explains my excitement to try it!

Here's a photo from Alfero Gelato, showing the man behind the gelato brand - Marco Alfero - and his gelato entry for the competition (right).

A side note: Many hotels and Italian restaurants place orders for his gelatos as they like its quality and texture!

Why are the tubs all closed? There's a special reason.

The gelato tubs are kept closed to minimise their contact with air, light and the inconsistent temperatures. This helps to retain the quality of the gelatos.

I started off with some hot chocolate. It's really smooth and not even that sweet. It's totally my style of how a good hot chocolate should be. When I tasted this, I knew that the chocolate gelato here was not going to disappoint.

For the young ones - he's also done up a pure Milk Gelato flavour to suit the taste buds of children. It's really flavoured with milk, but it was too light for my tastebuds and I would still stick with the other flavoured gelatos.

However, the brownie totally didn't make the mark for me, so I will focus on the gelatos instead.

He is also very experimental with his products, and to appeal to the local market with the help of a staff, he came up with...

Chendol Waffles paired with Chendol Merdeka Gelato! This gelato flavour was also the one which got him into the top 16 in the Best Gelato Flavour Competition.

Combining the fragrance of coconut milk, freshly squeezed pandan juice, flavourful gula melaka, velvety red beans and smooth chendol (green starched jelly), Chendol Merdeka Gelato is created to commemorate Singapore’s 50th Birthday, which also explains why the word ‘Merdeka’ is added to the name, and the love for local food by the locals.

It was an interesting idea, and the gelato was really lovely! But I personally feel that the waffles should be crispier.

Here are the various gelato flavours we tried!

Tested Flavours (Not in order): Pistachio, Dark Chocolate, Yuzu, Passion Fruit, Durian, Strawberry Sorbet, Avocado, Mango, Chendol, Walnut and Bacio (Hazelnut and Chocolate)

My favourite flavours are the pistachio (although I'm not a pistachio person!), dark chocolate, yuzu, mango and avocado! Be sure to try these flavours when you drop by.

Looking from the photo above, were you able to spot the pistachio?

No, it's not the cup in the front row, spotting a brighter green. Their pistachio ice cream colour is a slightly dirtier green because there's absolutely no colouring used in his gelatos.

The Pistachio ice cream is hidden here! The green one in the front row is Avocado

Marco sources and imports the ingredients used in his gelatos from Italy. You can be sure that you're getting the best from your 'simple' cup of gelato, as the distinctive ingredients are from the best parts of the country.

To put it simply, for example, he'll only import from the place in Italy which spouts best pistachios! So much effort goes into a scoop, and only natural ingredients are used, that's why I love their gelato.

Another thing I like about their gelatos are that there's no gum added in the ice-cream, that's why it melts faster than other ice-creams.

MELTING~!

Finally, my points go to Alfero Gelato as they only sport 2% to 9% fat, as opposed to ice-cream, which has about 18% to 30% fat in it! I'm sure this will be a huge score point for the girls!

Girls, time to enjoy!

Recently Singapore Press Holdings has a promotion for its SoShiok app users, where they treated to free gelato at Alfero Artisan Gelato in Marina Square Shopping Mall which quite well known for its homemade Italian gelato. Within 2 hours, 500 people has claimed the free gelato. The range of gelato is limited but looks great. The queue moves quite fast. I have selected chocolate which is quite thick and creamy. Tastes very nice and not too sweet.

Have been recommended to this shop for gelato, so I decided to give it a go. I selected their pistachio single scoop ice cream in a cup ($4.50). The scoop was bursting with rich nutty pistachio flavor, something that is usually missing in other ice cream joints. The ice cream texture was also soft but it's densely packed into a cup. Will definitely try other flavours in future!

A very classic café located at Marina Square. Famous of Handmade Italian ice-creams, it was awarded as best Gelato Café in South East Asia. I just came to know the metal containers available inside the café were actually for the purpose of keeping ice-cream in good condition without affected by constant exposure to air and light. The waffle took some time to come but it was definitely worth the wait. The waffle was crispy on the outside but fluffy and mosit on the inside. It has a nice egg taste and was not too sweet so it paired really well with the sweet gelato. We love how the warm waffle melts the gelato and soaked them up. The flavour 'Nuts About You' has a rich nutty flavour which i found out comes from using real premium nuts sourced from overseas. The 'Melon' flavour tasted very natural and i could bite into small pieces of real melon in it. This is definitely a gelato shop worthy of trying.

But I am just glad I found the lovely place. At that moment, I knew I just have to pay Alfero a visit. But at that moment, I just didn't feel like having gelato after a heavy luncheon. Since then, I have been waiting eagerly, praying earnestly for an opportunity...

Opportunity came knocking when I had the chance. It was my first time actually and I was having mixed feelings. I wasn't sure how the whole gelato experience would be like but somehow happiness compel me to go ahead.

Unlike your conventional gelato shop, you will never be able to see a array of different colored delights. It's all hidden. Hidden gem if you have to ask me. But in order to preserve the perfect texture and smoothness of their gelato, they have store them in pozzetto cabinet where neither air nor light could contaminate the quality. Seeing is good but taste is better! Yeah, I totally agree!

The nectar of the Gods. Mango Alphonso. Extremely mangoish. Happiness sipping out from natural sweetness. There was nothing much needed to be said apart from enjoying nectar wholeheartedly.

Nocciola is the Italian way of saying hazelnut. I have no doubt about the quality of hazelnut they choose. Nothing but the best of the best just for you. Something we love to hear right? I don't know about you but I sure do!

Alfero might not come cheap compared to your typical ice cream store but apparently there's a difference between ice cream and gelato. What's the astounding difference? Check out their website to find out more.

I would definitely recommend Alfero not just for their gelato but also their exceptionally friendly staffs. Being greeted by the brightest of smile never fails to bring comfort to someone who's in a unfamiliar place for the first time. As they say:

Even the Godfather loves it...

I just wonder when will be the next opportunity. Until then, I will be waiting patiently...

So here is it! True blue gelato! We had gula melaka (seasonal flavour), mango sorbet and durian mousse.

Gula melaka has a sugary caramel taste that carries a little hint of smokey flavour. Most of my friends love this flavour the most.

Mango sorbet was rather average and I prefer eating it with Durian Mousse. Durian Mousse has a stronger flavour that is already good on it's own though. You can even taste chunks of durian meat in the gelato. Noms!

Because there were 5 of us, we shared this huge tub of gelato among ourselves at $18 per tub.

no complains.

They stock homemade gelato with flavours such as Durian, Mango, Raspberry, Snow White (Milk), Tiramisu (Premium), Pistachio (Premium), Blueberry Cheesecake (new flavour), Bacio (Chocolate and hazelnut) and Chocolate. May have missed out one or two more flavours but their flavour selection is far from extensive.

For a single flavour scoop, it costs $4.50, a double flavour is $6.50 and a triple flavour goes for $8.50. The premium flavours are an additional 50cents. The staff is courteous, and also pretty generous with the scooping so I guess it gives you a run for your money. They also served iced water upon request!

I tried the raspberry and blueberry cheesecake flavours and soon learnt the hard way that flavour choice is very important when it comes to gelato. Gelato, unlike ice cream, is slightly icier and less creamy -so when it comes to fruity and citrus flavours the iciness + sourness is emphasized negatively. The raspberry looked so artificially colored when it was scooped onto my cup ...The deep pink aside, it was slightly too sour, and not creamy enough for me. Not fantastic. As if I did not already want to kick myself in the leg for choosing the wrong flavour, the blueberry cheesecake gelato was equally (if not, more) disappointing.

It had more frozen blueberries in it than actual gelato (I assure you I am not exagerrating!!), which was very strange. There was no hint of cheesecake in it at all, and generally a complete waste of money. I'd probably have been better off choosing a flavour such as tiramisu or chocolate, where the gelato would be completely smooth and not mixed with other ingredients that require chewing. I wouldn't say that this place serves bad gelato, I'm sure the consistency of it is completely fine, judging from the raspberry. It probably would not have been as rich as ice cream, but I definitely would have been better off having a creamy flavour. My fault here.

Priced at $6.50 for two flavours, its a much better bargain that other gelato places in town, probably one of the best too-you'd want to get the biggest bang for your buck and I'd say that this place is pretty decent. It's a sweet place to just sit and chill, not the most spacious cafe but it's cosy enough especially for a quick family pit-stop or a post-meal dessert.

The Gelato tastes good but not fantastic. In fact, I feel that there isn't a huge variety of flavours of gelato and hence, I will not put this dessert shop in my eateries recommendation list. Ordered this hazelnut flavor gelato which tastes like Ferraro Rocher. So, if you are a chocolate lover, you may like to try it. In general, I am kinda pleased with service. The service staff is kinda friendly and willing to let us try the a few flavours gelato before ordering.

Maybe it's because I love nut-based ice creams in general. But Alfero's hazelnut gelato is seriously good stuff. Velvety smooth and intensely flavored with the goodness of premium Piedmontese nuts, this was certainly the best hazelnut gelato that I've come across locally so far! On the other hand, my vanilla gelato could have done with a stronger vanilla fragrance. Little surprise, then, that I couldn't resist stealing spoonful after spoonful of the hazelnut gelato from my friend's cup.

Not only was the service at Alfero commendable, the gelato was excellent as well. I really liked the exquisitely silky mouthfeel of its gelato- you should try it out yourself! While Coccogelo's pistachio gelato was slightly more intense in flavor, Alfero's version is unparalleled in smoothness- I can't decide which I prefer. Wanting a refreshing perk-up after dinner, I chose to have a scoop of lemon sorbet as well. Although it was decent by all measures, I'll rather go for double or even triple scoops of gelato the next time I visit Alfero!

Price: $4.50 for a small cup (1 flavor), $6.50 for a medium cup (2 flavors), $8.50 for a large cup (3 flavors)
