Finally visited D.O.C after ages. Went to DOC for lunch during my intern times. Lucky us who made a reservation beforehand. It a pretty small area and gets really crowded during lunch hours. Decorated with wooden furniture and dim lighting. A warm and cozy feeling.
For their weekday menu, they have a mixture of brunch items and mains ranging from pasta to burger to pies to like chicken fillet. They also serve salads or other small bites. You can also choose a main with 2 choices of salad from over the counter. Choice of main – either poached salmon or roast chicken and choice of salads – garden salad, pasta salad or broccoli with herbs.
One of us ordered the main course with choice of 2 salad from over the counter. Another 2 of us ordered the smoked salmon scramble.
Poached Salmon with regular pasta salad & broccoli with herbs ($15): The appearance looks appetizing but taste wise was just okay. The poached salmon is alright, lightly flavoured with herbs. But the salads were disappointing. Broccoli with herbs is overpowered with the herbs taste and for the pasta salad, the pasta is undercooked, its a tad to hard.
Smoked Salmon Scramble ($16): The egg scramble taste very unusual from the ones i have tasted before. It looks creamy but doesnt taste creamy and instead it tasted milky to me. Something is just missing from the eggs. It tasted bland to me too. Not to my liking. ):
Luckily for our meal saviour. Buttermilk waffle with butter rum bananas ($15)! It cost as much as our mains! hahha. But well, at least the taste is good! Crisp fluffy waffle with caramelized rum bananas and scoop of vanilla ice cream to top it all! Thumbs up!
To sum it up, service of their friendly staff is good. Mains are not worth going for but dont miss their buttermilk waffle or you’ll regret!

However, getting in and out of that table was actually quite a challenge as you don't have enough walking space.

After several minutes of consideration, MB decided to order Buttermilk Waffles with Banana and ice cream ($13.50) & cappuccino ($5). I ordered the Sticky Date Pudding ($9) and Latte ($5).

It took them about 10 mins before the food arrived. While we were catching up I realised the temperature of this place is quite high. Even though there are several air-conditioners , it is just not enough to cool down the place. We were basically melting inside.

First to arrive was my Sticky Date Pudding and latte. The pudding is soft, moist and sticky. The ice cream combines well with the caramel sauce. While the almonds gave a crunchy texture to the desserts. The latte has a nice rosetta latte art. It looks very smooth, however the coffee is average. When you reach the middle part of the latte, it seems to be more air in the froth.

MB's waffle came and looks delicious. The serving is quite generous, especially on the caramelised banana. Good presentation. The waffle is rich and crunchy. The bananas toppings will be better with another 30 seconds on the heat. Cappuccino has a nice latte art, but we both agree the coffee is average.

The décor of this place is simple and with an open concept. You can see the back of the cafe once you enter the door. It has a cone shape, where the space at front is quite small and become wider and wider to the end. The setting of the tables and chairs are close to each other. They really maximise the available space. The size of the table is very small only enough for dessert and coffee. I can't even put my phone on the table. Service is limited and forgettable.

Overall DOC served good quality dessert. However, it seems the coffee is not to our preference. A small suggestion, the best time to visit this place is before noon or after 5pm unless something is done to lower down the temperature of restaurant. Cheers!!

The waffle is not quite crispy but still fluffy and tastes of hint of cinnamon powder. I could barely tastes of hint of rum in the banana.

Again here I I could not taste the vanilla bean in the yogurt. It becomes too grainy and difficult to chew after a few mouthfuls.

Overall the food seems average and highly overpriced. The place is way too hot and noisy to enjoy food properly.

Chocolate waffle taste normal with vanilla ice cream and strawberry toppings. Does not deliver the quality as expected for the price paid for. It was crispy on the outside but i find it not moist enough on the inside. Maple syrup was provided as well. This dessert is too sweet and good to be shared among more than 2 person.

Chocolate fudge within waffle, unlike usual waffles with chocolate sauce drizzled on top of waffles. There is a layer of chocolate in between the waffle. This make the waffle really chocolaty.

Smoked salmon, poached egg and ham stacked on top of soft English muffins with salads at the side. This is a new item on the menu but does not worth the price. Serving was little and the smoked ham was overly salty. Smoked salmon was good and goes well with the muffin.

D.O.C is one of the list of cafes in Singapore which does not charge GST, however its dishes are pricey though.

This is one of the popular cafe hopping destination for many, but i find this place overly raved and did not meet up to my expectation though i visit this cafe with a hungry stomach.
Be prepare to wait for at least 15mins if you did not make any reservation before going. Walk in to this cafe is really not the best option you are making. In addition, i feel that there are sub standard while doing reservation too. Sometimes you are allow to make reservation on the actual day of visiting but sometimes you are not allow to do so. This is even true after i heard some of the staffs advising the customers on this matter.

To satisfy my sweet tooth, I ordered the Banana Rum Buttermilk Waffle with Vanilla ice-cream ($13). It was served with Maple Syrup but I didn't add any on my waffle as there was already powdered sugar on top. The waffle had a tinge of fragrance and it definitely looked appealing with the scoop of ice-cream enthroned on top. It was vanilla flavour and tasted quite authentic with small specks of vanilla seeds visible. Waffle was fluffy but not as crispy as I would have preferred. Overall, the waffle was not awesome but good comfort food.

My friend had the Smoked Salmon Scramble ($15.50). For this, I would think it was pretty awesome!

Salmon portion was generous and tasted very fresh. The accompanied scrambled egg with the pancake base complemented perfectly.

For coffee, we had Cappuccino ($5) and Iced Latte. Coffee here was strong and flavourful. Many suggest the premium hot chocolate milk, even a rendition of drip coffee liquer is available.

More than average quality food while price is reasonable. But space is limited so one would feel quite constrained and uncomfortable, especially when the cafe is jam-packed

The latte ($5), which was smooth and the perfect art that decorated it warmed the heart. Although I found it slightly over bitter and sourish, it was acceptable. The cappuccino ($5) was also similar. Based on Department of Caffeine's Facebook, they take sustainably-sourced specialty coffee beans from Five Senses Coffee, Australia, and then apply serious technical know-how to craft caffeinated perfection. Sounds like they are serious about their coffee.

The French toast ($16) which was two loaves of brioche stuffed with maple syrup and bananas, soaked in vanilla yoghurt, and sprinkled with almonds and blueberries sent a sugar rush. Not sure if it was because my tummy had not grinded for the last 12 hours, but I felt sweetly blissful when I tucked into the French toast. The only pity was the bananas seemed to be overly soaked with maple syrup, making it soggy.

There was no way for me not to order waffles when I see one on the menu. Especially when it comes with ice-cream and peanut butter ($12.5) - these waffles were crispy on the outside (though not super crispy), fluffy and airy on the inside. The generous peanut butter sauce that drenched the waffles balanced the sweetness of the ice-cream and jam. A little pity that it can be crispier.

Overall, certainly one of the better places for a brunch. Food quality - checked. Attentive service - checked. Ambience - checked. Takes reservations - checked.

Tip 1: If you have Pickat app, it's 15% off (excluding drinks) with min spending of $20 till 29 Jan 2014, excluding Wed, weekends and public holidays. Download Pickat for free.

Tip 2: They have taken their reservation system online now. Reserve before you head down. Queuing is a waste of life.

We came 15 mins before the kitchen was closed. So we made order as fast as we could. I was dying to try the D.O.C Breakfast and my bf decided to try the shepherd's pie. Their signature cafe breakfast was so good but a lil bit pricey. However, the shepherd's pie was so so. This place has no GST and service charged. No wonder that service is a bit slow and the waiters werent even show their smiling face at all. For those who are around the area can drop by and give a try.

Moka 75% hot chocolate was what arrived.

and no, there was no user manual on this. i drink both at one time?

i pour one into another?

eventually i decided to have my ceramic mug first before slowly adding in whatever was in the beaker.

it wasn't too high on the chocolate rush.

but enough to curb my cravings.

and made for a good mug of hot chocolate.

So I went anyway, since if there is a place that has no lack of Brunch Cafes, it’d be Duxton. Stepping into the cafe struck me immediately, that we were in for a trouble. It was a narrow stretch down, very echoed, busy and noisy. It is a pity it was nowhere near a relaxed spot for a catchup – talking about ambience alone. We went on the waiting list, and was told a second in line. Naturally we thought it wouldn’t be too long a wait and headed off to a bookstore next shop, Littered with Books (thank god it’s a fanciful book store and kept us engaged for quite some time).

After at least a 90 minutes wait, I was getting impatient and thought I had given them the wrong contact number. I walked back to find out that they have been slotting in the people who have already made their reservations beforehand. To a certain extent, I really think that is the right thing to do. But c’mon, I verily believe that it can be done in moderation. Taking reservations is fine but you need to reserve some seats for walk-in guests don’t you?

The service was alright, don’t get me wrong. It’s just the reservations system they primarily need to work on. So if you are in a big group, it’s in your best interest to avoid coming here. Just so you know, I was only in a group of 3.

Cafe Latte ($5): I’m no coffee expert, but it was pretty good I could smell the fragrance of the coffee bean. Drinking it sugarless was also a pleasure as it wasn’t the most bitter cup of coffee. I thoroughly enjoyed this cup of Five Senses Coffee, Australia, because I did not have to spoil the taste with sugar.

Express Breakfast ($12): As the name would already have suggested, it isn’t the heartiest brunch you can get. But it sure is the warmest and most comfortable. Savor on every tear of the Banana Bread when it’s first served, warm. I don’t usually like anything banana except the fruit itself, but this, was not too overpowering. It complemented the freshly baked fluffy, fragile and warm bread perfectly. The granola with yoghurt was another well-executed bowl of breakfast treat. Though it sounds simple, the ingredients used matters. Nothing of the sour, dry, rough and boring kind here. Definitely a must-try if you would like a light meal.

DOC Breakfast Platter ($18.50): 5 items here. Let’s break it down. (1) Scrambled Eggs suited my palate to the nearest. Slightly fluffy and creamy, balanced saltiness. (2) Bacon wrapped Meatloaf, the piece sandwiched between the Brioche and the Eggs, was uniquely delectable. It was surprisingly not too salty, comes in a generous portion and basically serves as an extra depth to the entire bite. (3) Toasted Brioche however, pulled the rating of the dish down. It was over toasted and turned out tough. If it was a fluffy, slightly charred thick piece of Brioche, it’d have been a perfect match. (4) Cheese Boccocini, though hidden by the main highlight, was also orgasmically indulgent. Though served breaded, this cheese still remains soft and has its flavors well retained. A fork can effortlessly sink through the Boccocini. (5) Confit tomato. Ain’t no big fan of tomatoes, but hey, this deserves a try. It’s like a Molten Lava Cake of tomatoes. Sweet and soft.

63º Eggs with Dressed Smoked Salmon ($18.50): Newly minted just earlier this month, I don’t believe there would be a time this eggs would fail to have runny yolks, due to its promised precision. In this scenario, the Toasted Brioche was fine thanks to its flowy and watery counterparts of runny egg yolk and lemon and dill sauce. The sauce was slightly too sour for me, sometimes covering the taste of the others. But otherwise, the smoked salmon was fine and it was happy moments seeing the dish cooked to perfection.

Buttermilk Waffles with Butter Rum Bananas and Vanilla Bean Ice Cream ($13.50): Probably the most photogenic item on the menu of Department of Caffeine, I can vouch that it is not just a vase. It doesn’t only look good, it actually tastes good as well – in fact one of the best I’ve had. Complete with airy and adequately flavored (buttermilk) waffles with crispy edges, and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Not a big fan of the butter rum bananas but hey, it doesn’t taste as bad either. I’d recommend a try at any one of their Waffles options. Just do remember that when they say, for instance, Sundried Tomato and Herbs Waffle, it means those items are in the batter itself, you will not see them with your naked eyes.

For its sheer good and unpretentious food, I would recommend this place. However, I would also specifically caution its reservation system and its ambience crisis.

Note #1: Brunch is served on weekend.

Note #2: Prices stated are nett. No GST and service charge.

Cafe hoppers really ought to hop their way to Department of Caffeine located at Duxton. This newbie in the area has proven themselves serious on the coffee note, with food worth recommending as well.We had the Honey Lavender Tea Cake, Carrot Cake and Breakfast Quiche together with orders of Flat White. The Honey Lavender Tea Cake stood along the perfect line between moist and dry, topped with honey that takes your tastebuds on a sweet waltz and your sense of smell towards a meadow of lavenders.

We had the Honey Lavender Tea Cake, Carrot Cake and Breakfast Quiche together with orders of Flat White. The Honey Lavender Tea Cake stood along the perfect line between moist and dry, topped with honey that takes your tastebuds on a sweet waltz and your sense of smell towards a meadow of lavenders. Quite pleasant play on your senses. For the Breakfast Quiche, it was pretty average and definitely not the star dish in the glass display. The Carrot Cake on the other hand, stole the limelight with its generous amount of cream cheese that just hit the spot.

My expectations were high on coffee. After all, they did call themselves the Department of Caffeine. Most fortunately so, I was not disappointed. I had just about the perfect cup of coffee and needless to say, would be back for more.

Do note that they close pretty early everyday!

Finally found some motivation to travel out of the cosy home on a Sunday morning, to Department of Caffeine (D.O.C)! I’ve been hearing a lot about D.O.C’s buttermilk waffles and its been some time since I found my last favourite at Wimbly Lu, thus a trip down to Duxton was warranted. A large wooden plank hung on the pillar marks the territory of D.O.C clearly, or its frosted glass windows with black frames, right beside a night pub would have been rather misleading. If you know where Littered with Books is at, D.O.C is just a few doors down!

63 degrees Egg [2 soft eggs w dressed salmon, asparagus, lemon & dill cream on brioche crouton] ($$18.50) – These eggs remind me of those at Skyve; ultra runny and smooth, almost like the soft-boiled eggs from Ya Kun. Almost. That said, I really like this dish as it has all my favourite brunch items, including the green asparagus and salmon! Thankfully the brioche wasn’t too hard from toasting. I sort of lost the taste of the lemon and dill cream though which was overpowered by the eggs.

Buttermilk Waffles w Blueberry Compote & Premium Vanilla Ice Cream ($13.50) – Indeed, this is a must try!! The waffle was extremely light and fluffy, with a nice buttermilk taste. It’s so light that you could have 5 of them and not feel full. The blueberry compote was fresh but may be a little too sweet for those who have lower tolerance for sugar. However, I felt that the combination of hot waffles, plump and moist blueberries and straight-out-of-freezer ice cream is the perfect recipe for a wonderful Sunday morning. Okay, and any other time too!

The cafe service area is just this narrow strip of real estate, no hidden corners. The semi-industrial woody interior decor gave the cafe a no nonsense, pragmatic character.

With no spare seats around, customers are forced to put their bags and barang barang on the floor or have them placed on their laps. It can get quite unsightly, hope the management can provide a solution for this.

The cafe does not charge service fees so you have to queue and order your food. Magazines are placed near the counter for customers' browsing pleasure.

That's our French rose ($7) by Tea bone zen mind served in a dainty glass tea pot on a petite wooden tray. Hmm for $7, can give more rose buds? The rose tea commanded a light floral fragrance with slight tangy flavour.

Mork Speciality Hot Chocolate ($6.50) was supposedly a special blend of hot chocolate that offers greater emphasis on the cocoa flavour. It did achieved its objective ... by withholding sugar. We were not impressed.

Caffe Latte ($5) was pretty potent and definitely a great perk me up in the morning. Taste wise, it's quality caffeine but nothing outstanding.

Our Sausage, Mushrooms & Egg ($15.50) which consisted of English pork sausages with mushroom ragout topped by a sunny side up egg on toasted sourdough was first to be served. Hidden below the sunny side up was a generous portion of mushrooms. Thumbs up!

One of the cafe's 2 Main course & salad ($16 for regular salad and $18 for a large salad portion), Poached salmon with dill and mint sauce accompanied by Soba noodles with wakame, cucumber and sesame was up next. We were surprised that the entire dish was served cold even the salmon! But it was meant to be a cold dish so no fault of theirs. It tasted alright but not as attractive as a weekend brunch items.

I personally loved my Sundried tomato & herb waffles ($17). Served with bacon, scrambled eggs & maple bacon jam, it offers the perfect combination of all my favourite breakfast sides. It's like my breakfast dream come true.

But D.O.C Platter ($18) won hands down as our favourite breakfast item on their menu. Scrambled eggs & bacon wrapped meatloaf on toasted brioche served with tomato confit & cheese boccincini was a gorgeous sight to behold.

The runny eggs reminded me of Mcdonald's Big Breakfast but done so much better. The good people here are really generous with their meat and ingredients, look at that thick stack of meat!

The desserts and cakes served at Department Of Caffeine didn't look that fantastic hence we casted our eyes at FLOR Pâtisserie. We utterly enjoyed our weekend brunch. Department of Caffeine delighted us with their amazing breakfast offerings while FLOR Pâtisserie satisfied our cravings for sweet endings. They make wonderful complement for each other!

Department of Caffeine, like its name, focuses a lot on coffee. But besides coffee, they serve quite a satisfying range of other food like sandwiches and waffles. I was craving for waffles so I decided to order their buttermilk waffles with banana and rum ice cream. The ice cream was not too bad because the rum taste was strong. The waffle was crispy and quite fluffy as well. For $12, it's pretty alright. Good to share it with a friend.
