I first learnt of this cafe while reading a food review about it on a page of an 8 Days magazine. I never knew before that somewhere in Singapore has a cafe that offers localised Western cakes and pastries. The food reviewer actually believes the food there tastes good. Inside the cafe, I was amazed by the 1960s style furniture and decor. The tables function as showcases displaying objects from the olden days of Singapore. There is a collection of oldies played. It was like I was teleported back to Singapore's past. There are many kinds of cakes and pastries shown inside the cake display. Not only do they look appealing, they are also sold at low and affordable prices. I had a pineapple tart, an almond finger and an apple aloe vera cake together with a cup of teh. The appearance of the pineapple tart is different from those one often sees during Chinese New Year. It takes the shape of a sampan and that reminds me of the days when there were traders and settlers moving along the Singapore River by such boats. It is served in a paper cup. The crust is hard, crumbly and eggy and the pineapple filling is gritty, sweet and a bit sour. The almond finger is long and wide and has a light brown meringue topping. The whole pastry is crumbly and a bit soft. The almond bits add a crunchy texture and a bit of its nutty flavour. The taste somehow reminds me of nougats. Like the pineapple tart, the apple aloe vera cake is served in a paper cup. The cake is soft, firm and bouncy. The cream is thick and smooth. The apple aloe vera preserve is smooth, runny, sweet, sour and refreshing. The teh is milky, has the fragrance of tea, not too sweet and goes well with the food. It can also help to wash down any bits of food stuck in the teeth.

It was a relaxing dining experience to have a tea break and enjoy the environment of the restaurant at the same time. The cafe also offers toast and scones and sells spreads such as strawberry jam and lemon curd. I do not mind having local style afternoon tea at the cafe another time.

I was amazed by the concept of this cafe, as it makes me feel nostalgic and travel back to the olden days. I ordered their set menu which consist of bostock and coffee, I like the taste of the bostock as it has a strong almond flavour topped with almond flakes and sugar icing. The coffee wasn't up to my standard, as it was not hot enough. The pricing of this set was reasonable as it cost only $3.50. I will return to try their other pastry as most of them is quite cheap.

Newly minted 3 months ago, Dong Po Colonial Cafe boasts its authenticity and uniqueness most. Kelvin and Albert, the owners and bakers of this family-run business are here to save what remains of the Hainanese-Western confectionary. I’m glad. I’m a Hainanese myself. Three generations ago, Kelvin’s great granduncle had learned the baking from a French Pastry Chef. And then, it was out of the norm, what with Singapore being under the British Colony for quite some while – most were students of the British chefs. The recipes, kept till the 21st century from the 1950s – 1960s, are today, followed quite faithfully, save for a couple of tweaking all for the best.

It is a very simple and casual cafe. It’s self-service order, but if items require you to wait out, you will be served once they are prepared.

Bostock ($2.40) / Peanut Butter Toast (2 Slices) ($2): My dining partner and I went order-crazy and had our bill totaled to about $25 at the end of the day. I admit, I was the culprit placing most of the orders. I mean, they are all so cheap and enticing. The Bostock was the star of the night. Bostock is an Almond Cream French Toast. Their rendition was perfected with the right intensity of caramelized syrup and sweetness. It is not the richest pastry used, but good enough for me. With Bostock right beside it, the Peanut Butter Toast paled in comparison as it’s relatively more ordinary.

Scone with Apple Aloe Vera Jam (served with Kopi / Teh) ($3.30): Scones here didn’t quite make the mark. Not only was it slightly on the ‘dry’ side, a bite into it would cause the crumbs of the scone to spread and stick to your inside, making it quite hard to complete the course. The jam and cream would help a little though. I’d say skip this and go for their other (abundance of) options.

2 Pastries (Almond Macaron & 3-Hole Cookie) (served with Kopi / Teh) ($4.20): No I’m not a fan of the fanciful looking hol(e)y cookie, it came off one too dry for me. But well, I’d think it’d go really well with a cup of thick coffee though – the way you are supposed to dine here, so do ready one when you are here. On the other hand, the unassuming Almond Macaron impresses in its taste more than its looks (that’s why they say your heart > appearance, so it applies to food as well). Biting through it, you can taste the sweetness, the stickiness, its crustiness, and its airiness all in one. Put them together, you can an addictive piece of dessert art. A must try.

Quiche ($3.50): The Quiche isn’t as flamboyant as its other confections. That statement applies to both how it looks and how it tastes, unfortunately. Every part of it tasted ‘customary’ and nothing out of the norm.

Bread & Butter Pudding ($2.80): A chunk like this off its freshly baked tray only costs that much. It is more than reasonable. Moreover, I was in luck as it was hot off the oven and the warmness, the buttery bread, the raisins, the milk and the egg in it just tasted more prominent and distinctive it was a joy with every bite. I also like that the bread is soft, moist, fluffy and not overly sweet.

Dong Po has so much more to offer I couldn’t finish it. With that, I’d be sure to be back to taste its other 1950s. They have 6 different sets available, each not above $4.50 and includes a cuppa hot beverage. Hell yeah.

Whilst I haven’t teleported myself back to the past and taste how confections then are like, I can safely say I quite enjoyed my meal here (I had these for dinner). Not only is Kelvin a cheerful soul in the otherwise melancholic ambience (that always dawn upon me in a reminiscing mood), the pastries served are more ‘hits’ than ‘misses’. Further, they are indeed unique and not one you can find at Breadtalk or off the streets.

I say, bring your parents there maybe. It’d be quite an experience for them and for you.

Note #1: All prices shown are nett. No GST and Service Charge.

Note #2: Only cash payment accepted.

Note #3: Takeaways are welcomed.

Nostalgic cafes that gives a blast to the past are the “in” thing now, especially when there are more Indie cafes opening up lately. The first thing that attracted me was the chiller of cakes and pastries. It got me so aroused I eventually left the place forgetting to try the toasts that everyone else were ordering! While this is a place with a sense of nostalgia, it does sell some modern treats that are popular with the younger generation these days, such as Chocolate Mousse and Macaron Tarts.

These might look very close to a square replica of an Oneh-Oneh, but they are actually Strawberry Lamingtons. I found it rather peculiar because the insides of the Lamingtons were undisturbed, being a plain sponge cake with a layer of cream. It was light as it was a rather thin layer of sponge cake, so no matter what there would always be a light tint of strawberry flavour in it. For those whom are interested, there is also an Orange variation served here as well.

Almond Macaron Tart is a fusion sort of snack. Taking the well-loved macaron shell and putting it into an egg tart-ish shell as a filling with a fluffy almond cake filling (similar to the texture of biscuits served with KFC A.M. Breakfast, Popeye’s and Texas) in between, this is bound to be a favourite with all ages. The macaron shell did taste the part though it would help if it was slightly chewier. Nonetheless the taste of almonds were distinct and solid, and the light crumbling of the macaron shell creates such a brilliant contrast with the denser crumbling of the tart shell.

This Sampan-like pastry is the Pineapple Tart. This is seemingly giant for a pineapple tart and it is generous on pineapple fillings. The pineapple fibres in the feelings give it a great texture, but the crust though robust lacked a crustiness which would have made the texture better.

They have many types of nice puffs, tarts and cupcakes. Their theme is reminiscence and saving the French type of pastry or cakes from vanishing. And they are featured on the papers too. Also heard from my dad that the cafe is quite modernized type, I think should be just like Chye Seng Huat Hardware. At about $2, you may get a nice pastry or cake for a good afternoon tea.

Well I had the one with a cherry on top this morning for breakfast. The cream, icing and cherry add to the sweetness overall. The cake itself is quite crisp.

I will go down personally to enjoy afternoon tea over at Dong Po.
