The old school interior were pretty well retained, just take a look at the rusty zinc roof like material under decking up below the cashier counter.

Head deeper to somewhere near the cashier and you will see the nostalgic items all tucked in one corner - the old school movie deck, type writer, plates, photos, amplifier, lamp, coca cola etc.

The first bite of Rum Cake was like travelling back in time via time machine into the 80s days when such cake would make my day. Such feelings were just indescribable. The almond flakes over the medium soft sponge cake with its middle brown portion gave total de ja vu for my childhood. This is perhaps the best rum cake I had right now.

Strawberry Mousse Cake which was most likely replaced by the Strawberry Cheese Cake nowadays, lookalike. With a beautiful red top layer covered with Gelatine Jelly with alternating mousse and sponge cake. Though it may taste a tad sweet but having such sweet treats is definitely heavenly once in a blue moon.

An unusual sight of Pineapple tart! These days Pineapple tarts were either in rectangular or round sizes, never in a little boat shape of this size. Its big and beautifully baked, stuffed with sweetened Pineapple.

Having tried its cake few times by taking away, I have never knew and appreciate its history. Through this visit, I had learnt about its environment and the old fashioned recipes. It makes it a point to be back once a while for such old school indulgence.

Ambience at Dong Po Colonial Cafe is reminiscent of olden style coffee shops along the waterfront of Singapore. With tiled flooring, sturdy and quaint wooden furniture, warm lighting, and knick-knacks strewn about the place, Dong Po Colonial Cafe is a blast from the past. The nostalgic bakery atmosphere is heightened by the sight of attractive pastries and confectioneries within the clear display, and the aroma of roasted coffee beans.

Service at Dong Po Colonial Cafe is partial self-service. Ordering and payment is done over the counter, but staff will assist to serve some orders to your table. If asked, staff are able to provide basic descriptions of each pastry / confectionery available, and the place is a good local introduction to Singapore breakfast culture for tourists. Orders are fulfilled quickly and efficiently, as is clearing of empty / dirty tables.

Food at Dong Po Colonial Cafe is all about traditional Hainanese European pastries and breakfast items. Think sweet tarts, cream cakes, fresh toast, and aromatic coffee. Taste is generally good, staying true to the founder's recipes, which were handed down through the family. Portions are nicely sized for individuals, and cost about the same as other similar coffee places. Budget about SGD $5 per person for a set meal with a shared dessert.

Loved the Coconut Tart (SGD $2) here! The aroma of toasted coconut is enticing, bite into it, and you get a strong toasted coconut flavour, with only a light sweetness. Texture is grainy and crumbly, not too dry. Among the better ones I've had!

The Chocolate Butter Mint Cake (SGD $2.60) is above average. The chocolate sponge cake has a soft, moist texture, with a solid chocolate flavour, while the thick, smooth cream has a refreshing mint taste. Lively on the palate, quite good.

The Lamingon Orange Cake (left) had a surprisingly strong orange flavour, which reminded me of the childhood Fruity orange candy infused in the old-school sponge cake. The light coconut flakes around it made for a more textured mouthfeel. The Apple Aloe Slice Cake (right) on the other hand was much sweeter, with the same sponge cake, but with aloe vera bits stuffed in between. I wished the apple puree could be more generous though.

By this time, I realized that all of the cakes were made of the same sponge cake as their base but permutated with different flavourings and toppings. The Good Old Lemon Roll (left) is by far my favourite, the lemon-infused flavours made it the most distinctive and full of its own character. Some may find it a little sour but I really like it that way. The Strawberry Mousse Cake (middle) was a little too sweet, though it makes for a pretty picture. The Chocolate Truffle (right) tasted like chocolate but not really chocolate truffle. I shouldn't have expected more given that it's only at $2.20 a piece, but well, I guess it's indeed the whole experience that is interesting.

There were a lot of old artifacts on display around the cafe, including this pair of phoenix candles encased in the table. It's worth a shot to visit this cafe, but go easy on the cakes and splurge on the coffee, then go on cafe hop elsewhere with so many cafes in the region!

Ah, chocolate cake! What's not to love? Both cakes were soft and moist, however, the Chocolate Sweetheart had a tad too much butter cream for my liking. Makes me feel very "guilty" after indulging in it. Haha! Get the Chocolate Butter Cream Cake slice instead. All chocolate, all perfection.

These 2 pastries are to die for. The portion of the Chocolate Eclair is considerably huge for its price of $1.90. Also, Dong Po is very generous with the cream filling within. The chocolate ganache was made from dark chocolate, which helps to tone down the sweetness from the chocolate cream filling. An eclair very well done!

Moving on to the Three Hole Cookie! If you like biscuits with a strong "buttery" taste, then yes, you MUST get the Three Hole Cookie! Crumbly and oh-so-delicious. The jam on the biscuit is a bonus treat too

Of course I will never leave the cafe without ta-pao-ing some of their famous pastries!

Presenting to you... The Chocolate Cupcake and Apple Aloe Vera Slice. Chocolate cupcake was delish, however the only imperfection is that I find the frosting-to-cake ratio a little off. Perhaps the cupcake could do with lesser frosting.
The Apple Aloe Vera Slice is perfect! Soft and moist cake with the correct amount of butter cream frosting and apple aloe vera jam. Worth a try, but not worth $2.20 per slice. It's too tiny for its price tag.

The above 2 pastries are the most disappointing. I disliked the too-strong almond taste that was present in the Almond Macaron Tart and the Optical Case was too dry. Kudos to the cute name, though.
Other Info. : Do go early if you would like to dine-in, because the cafe is always packed!

I’m getting more and more sentimental recently. I wonder if this is all part of aging as I approach my mid-30s. Nostalgic stuffs really draw my attention these days, so does this quaint looking coffee shop with its traditional signboard.

I was at Kandahar Street as I wanted to buy some swiss rolls from the Rich & Good Cake Shop but the queue was so long, it stretched all the way to the end where the popular Rumah Makan Minang Nasi Padang is. I thought of coming in to Dong Po for a coffee and pastry while waiting for the swiss roll queue to be shorter.

My husband ordered Set D (any 2 pastries with coffee/tea at $5.00) and Set F (Bostock with coffee/tea at $3.50) plus 2 extra pastries (optical box and long cup at $1.70 each) to share between two of us.

The long cup is specially made in that elongated shape so we can dip it in our coffee, just like how we’d eat it in the old days. It has a lovely buttery flavour and the texture is fluffy and moist BUT it is very oily (the parchment paper surrounding it is all soaked in grease). I could easily eat a few more if it’s not that greasy!

I requested for kopi with less sugar as I expected some of the pastries to be sweet so in this way, the flavours balance up. To my delight, the coffee is one of the best I’ve tried in ages. It reminded me of happier times when my father used to take me to his favourite coffee shop when I was 5 or 6, and he’d order coffee black (less sugar) that was served in similar traditional cup and saucer and because the drink was hot, he’d pour some onto the saucer so I can slurp it up with a spoon. Oh yes, I was quite a coffee drinker since I was a kid in the 80s!

The butterfly cupcake is probably my favourite among all on the plate. Moist and buttery with rich cream in the middle. What can be better than this!

The optical box which comprises of chocolate ganache filling between two sponge fingers is my least favourite. The fingers are very dry and the filling is just not chocolatey enough.

I first had lamingtons when I was in Australia more than a decade ago but it was a chocolate version. This strawberry one is definitely my first. Even though it looks pink enough, I just couldn’t taste the strawberry flavour in it. Nevertheless, it’s still a delightful piece of sponge.

This is Dong Po’s local version of the almond brioche bostock that uses normal white bread. On top goes a layer of fragipane almond cream made of almond, sugar, butter, egg & flour and a generous handful of sliced almonds. This is only made upon order so be prepared to wait a while for it. It is guaranteed served hot and crispy to your table. Every bite of it spells nutty flavour with a delicious richness to it. It’s definitely one of the best pastries here. A must order!

They have various breakfast sets and I got this set F, which consist of their highly raved Bostock and a cup of Kopi. Dong Po certainly makes a good rendition of the French delicacy Bostock, which is usually made with brioche. Their version of Bostock is made using our local bread, which is baked fresh upon order! It is then slathered with frangipane, which is a mixture of almond, sugar, butter and flour. Lastly, it is topped generously with almond flakes and icing sugar. I love the crisp of the flakes on toasted bread and the almond taste was just nice, not too strong or weak.
The cup of Kopi complemented well with my Bostock and it was a good breakfast! I will certainly come back to try their teh and the other pastries!

When I first heard the name Dong Po Cafe, I was filled with excitement as it had been a long while since I last had 'Dong Po Pork', which is actually a Chinese delicacy whereby the pork belly is pan-fried and subsequently red-cooked to tenderness and melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

After some looking around on the GPS and when we eventually reached the Dong Po Colonial Cafe, I was in for a rude surprise to say the least. There was no 'Dong Po Pork' nor was it a Chinese restaurant, it was a cafe to experience the flavours and nostalgia of Singapore back in the '50s and 60s.

As we stepped into the neatly decorated cafe, we immediately found ourselves surrounded by toys and knick knacks from the hay days of our parents. After some look around, one could only appreciate the efforts undertaken by the owner of this cafe in trying to install elements of the past into a cafe of today. So, how exactly did the days of colonial Singapore look like?

As we warmed up to our seats, we suddenly realized that we would have to place our orders in person at the counter. Deep within, I was secretly hoping that they would serve 'Dong Po Pork' as a speciality dish but after perusing the menu at the counter, I settled for the fact that this was a cafe afterall.

Apart from what was offered on display, there was the set menu which featured some of their signature items which we were going to try!

Set E - Scone served with Jam, Fresh Cream and Teh / Kopi - S$4.20/-

Upon ordering the scone set, we were given the option to choose our preferred jam. All the jams served were homemade and after going through the usual orange marmalade, strawberry, etc, we decided on the lemon curd jam. Served on the side was some fresh cream to go along with the warm scone. Personally, I love the intricate attention paid to serving warm scones. As simple as it might be, you would be surprised with the number of cafes and eateries out there who for convenience sake, serve scones at room temperature.

The lemon curd was really good as the balance in sweetness and tang suited our palate and it tasted rich and viscous. While the jam was good, the scone barely made the mark as it was hard and tasted almost like biscuit with no real butter taste nor fragrance. It was sorely pedestrian to say the least but credit to the fresh cream and lemon curd for saving the day.

Set F - Bostock with Teh / Kopi - S$3.50/-

The names on the menu did not make much sense to me, so I took the easy way out and asked for recommendations. As we were told that the 'Bostock' was a must-try, we gladly obliged and went for it. What exactly is a 'Bostock' anyway?

Some research revealed that it is a simple French delicacy in which an almond frangipane tops day-old brioche. Now that you get a gist of what that name entails, let the taste buds do the judging already!

While we liked that the almond taste was rather strong, especially with the almond flakes generously toasted and scattered across the sliced bread, the base dough did not quite come across as a brioche. The almond flakes were crisp and added a good layer of texture to the soft 'Bostock'. It was certainly a good rendition but not wow-impressive.

Kaya Butter Toast - S$1.90/-

Of the different sets ordered, I actually liked the kaya butter toast most. The bread was sliced thinly and toasted perfectly with a nice crisp to the surface. Sandwiched between the toasts was a generous slab of butter and spread of coconut jam (kaya). Admittedly, the kaya did not have the eggy fragance like that expected of Killiney Kopitiam nor the strong coconut/pandan taste like that of Ya Kun, it was well-balanced in terms of taste and I liked that the sweetness was mild yet sufficient to please.

Almond Macaroon - S$1.90/-

While this was called the almond macaroon, I am not quite sure if it matched our expectations in terms of taste. It was supposed to be a light baked confection with meringue-like cookies and when I first sank my teeth truth this pastry, I was expecting somewhat of a sweet cake with ground almonds.

I am quite clueless when it came to describing this pastry for it seemed like a tart with a nice almond crust to it. It was arguably close to what one might consider as meringue-cookie but I felt that it lacked any outstanding elements to be termed a signature confection. It was overall an 'okay' pastry.

Almond Finger - S$1.90/-

I expected the almond finger to be largely similar to the macaroon and it did not surprise. The only distinct difference was that the crust to this almond finger had a slightly harder and crisp coating to it as compared to the meringue-like almond macaroon featured above.

Likewise, we felt that it was an 'okay' pastry and what I particularly liked about it was that it was not too sweet but the almond taste could have been a touch stronger.

Chocolate Truffle Slice Cake - S$2.20/-

While I looked beyond the almond pastries to get my confection fix, we were recommended the chocolate truffle slice. It was made and served in a very 'old school, classic' fashion. I however struggled to find any particularly impressive elements about the cake.

The sponge was good and so was the chocolate cream but it lacked depth to make it a must-try.

3 Hole Cookie - $1.90/-

This large cookie caught our attention due to the interesting colours involved. It actually comprised three different types of jam and involved two large cookies being put together like a 'sandwich'. While the cookie was enjoyable on its own with a nice tinge of butter fragrance and crumbling lightly to each bite, we thought that it was an interesting twist to showcase the homemade jams, which clearly enhanced the overall presentation and taste.

Even though we had to place our orders in person and payment upfront, the various confections were nicely plated and served to us. We had a milk tea and plain black coffee but like most of the confections tried, it was largely pedestrian. Overall, the service was good as the staffs at the counter was patient in making recommendations to us but we felt that quality of the food could be improved to make it outstanding.

It seemed that the only drawing point for me at least, was the nostalgic decoration which attempts to bring forth a memorable dining experience.

I packed a box of pastries for takeaway and they include chocolate twirl cupcake, pineapple tart, almond macaroon tart and the coconut tart. Each item costs between $1.70 - $1.90.

I was most pleased with the chocolate twirl cupcake, considering that it looks like a simple cupcake with chocolate cream topping. The chocolate twirl topping has a very intense chocolate flavour and the cupcake is soft and fluffy, making this a very worthy buy. Next, the pineapple tart comes in the shape of a boat. The pineapple filling tastes fresh and tangy and comparable to those quality pineapple tarts that we can get during Chinese New Year season. It would be fantastic if they do make and sell these in bottles for festive and non-festive seasons, though the price of each piece is not cheap. The almond macaroon tart looks like a smooth macaroon shell in a tart. It does taste of almond and not too sweet as I would expect from a macaroon. The coconut nut tart is baked to a crispy golden brown tart and the filling is soft and chewy.

In all, I am pleased to find such a traditional bakery cafe with quality pastries at affordable prices and I wouldn't mind coming back again to do a takeaway of their unique and yummy pastries.

Entering this cafe when it ran out of kaya butter toasts and its signature bostock is just as disappointing as entering Ya Kun when their kaya toasts are sold out or even Breadtalk emptied of pork floss buns. Count myself lucky or unlucky, I managed to catch the scones which were fresh out of the oven. Neither the aroma nor texture stood out and it was slightly dry on the inside. At the very least, I did manage to try it with their homemade lemon curd and kaya. The lemon curd was smooth and tart. But the kaya was not the brown version that we preferred and it was slightly too sweet.

The moist and custardy bread and butter pudding ($2) was as good as those served at many restaurants. It tasted as if Creme Anglaise (vanilla cream sauce) had been mixed into the batter, and should be left on its own without the strawberry sauce.

For the other kopi/tea set with choice of 2 pastries, we picked the almond biscotti and coconut tart. Unlike many coconut tarts from neighborhood bakeries, it distinguishes itself from the average ones with its sharp toasted coconut fragrance and controlled sweetness. The pastries here are cheap and good. But not fantastic enough to draw me back unless I am in the vicinity. Perhaps it would be good if they can focus their core on only a few pastries and their coffee.

I'm not very sure but was it common for kopi tiam to sell so many pastries back in the fifties or sixties?

Quite a popular café these days. What's made me come here again is the pastries available at this place. However not much choices are left when I made the visit. The slice of apple aloe cake($2.20) is quite light in texture and does not taste too sweet. It is my first time having a cake with aloe cubes in it.Another pastry is the well known 3-hole cookie($1.90). It looks so pretty with 3 holes filled with different coloured jam. The texture of the cookie is firm and buttery. For just $5, you can

For just $5, you can have the above 2 pastries, served with a cup of hot kopi or teh. But the kopi here seems to be overwhelmed by the milk taste.

If one doesn't like hot drink, there is also cold version too. The old teh ($1.90) also has similar problem as the kopi as the taste is more milky than tea.

Overall food is not bad. But the drinks still have a long way to go.

Retro cafe with lovely pastries to bring you back to the young days....I popped over during lunchtime, cafe was rather empty (which was great, because a quiet place for lunch was certainly what I needed after a hectic half day at work) and nice oldie song was playing in the background...Had their traditional kaya/butter toast , eggs with teh set and a muffin. I love it that they the bread was in the normal Loaf bread slice. I often had difficulty finishing the 4 pieces toast at normal Kaya toasts cafe. This serving was just nice. The bread was crisp on the outside, kaya and butter was at its right amount. Not too little nor overpowering.

A little overcooked IMO, but no complains.

The muffin had a very old school taste to it. Maybe it was the cream that they used, it's a little oily, thick and sweet. I could barely taste the sweetness of my Teh after eating this muffin. The cake was a little hard yet moisy at the same time. Good for sharing as it may be too much for 1 pax.

Lovely comfort food that reminds me of Mom and the pastries u used to buy from the neighbourhood cake shops on yr way back home from school... =)

For $3.50, it is served with a hot cuppa of Kopi or Teh as Set F. The teh C tastes as it has been sitting for sometimes, as it has abit of sourness aftertaste.

Overall it is quite a novelty experience and nice place to relax and enjoy the passing time.
