MAC & CHEESE ($15++)
With creamy lobster sauce under melted cheddar, mozarella & parmesan
Wait 20 minutes
The mac and cheese was rich and creamy, with crunchy prawn roes in it. Lots of bits of the lobster meat. But it was quite oily at the bottom of the bowl.

Golden Custard Lava Cake ($12)
Molten chocolate lava cake with a salted egg yolk custard center
*limited portions available*
Served in a big dim sum basket. The motlen filling flowed out easily and smooth. The cake was pipping and moist. It tasted chocolaty and salty with bits of the salted egg yolk.

Overall food was not bad and served quite fast too. Iced water was served to the table.

I have to admit that the location is not very accessible if you are visiting by train. With two nearest MRT stations stationed in town, Five & Dime can only depend on Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut MRT Stations. Luckily, there is a bus stop directly across the road, which a little more convenience to diners, as well as a carpark just right behind the cafe.
Five & Dime does not have a lot of seats, so reservation is actually recommended, and they only take in reservation on every two hours (e.g. Table reservation at 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, etc.).
French Toast ($16.00) with choice of either crispy bacon or chicken sausages and with fruit salad. It really seems to me as a very simple dish, but their French toast is just too fluffy and the syrup with butter makes the toast not too dry yet sweet.
Braised Pork Belly Sandwich ($18.00), with the use of black Berkshire pork in between toasted French white and sweet potato fries at the side. I have no idea how many portions are available, but I'm glad that I am one of those trying out the limited portions!
Pork belly is definitely yummy, dripping with sauce on the "tough-like-rock" French white. Well, the outer is hard, but the bread itself is still quite soft and the dripping sauce is acting like a jam to me.
Golden Custard Lava Cake ($12.00). The only special out of the list of 5. Something like custard bun, but instead a "westernized" version. Love the soft chocolate-ty taste of the cake, mixing the sweet and saltiness together to form a smile on your lips.

Back again at Five and Dime to try their famous salted egg yolk custard lava cake! This popular brunch spot is not the most accessible; the nearest MRT (Somerset) is 10-15 walk away but that doesn’t stop the crowds from coming. For those who drive, free parking is available at the back.
Five and Dime pride themselves for serving unpretentious, quality food at reasonable prices. The interior is small but stylish. Service is efficient, friendly and cheerful.
We were taken by the enticing aroma of our neighbour’s Calamari ($9) and therefore ordered one too. Crisps batter, springy calamari teamed with tartar sauce, what’s there not to like?
W had two beautifully poached eggs nesting on wagyu beef slices and brioche, accompanied with mesclun greens, spiced breakfast potatoes and a bowl of fruit salad. Five and Dime’s Eggs Benny ($18) was competently executed and gratifying.
Five and Dime is well-known for their Mentaiko Pasta ($18) and this was on almost every table. The slightly soft spaghetti was tossed in creamy mentaiko and topped with more cod fish roe. The umami pasta is a good choice if you want to jumpstart your day with a bit carbo boost, however, if you’re not a fan of fishy aftertaste, this is not for you.
The fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes ($15) adorned with fresh fruits came with butter and maple syrup on the side. Diners can opt for crispy bacon or chicken sausage to complement their pancakes. It’s decent brunch plate that will please most palates.
The highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the rich Golden Custard Lava Cake($12), a unique east meets west creation that sent us to dessert heaven. Presented in a traditional dim sum basket, the chocolate exterior breaks open to reveal a glorious river of golden elixir- salted egg yolk custard.
Ask the server for the flavour of the Crème Brulee ($12) prepared for the day. If its camomile, get it! The crème brulee is burnt enough on the top, and has a nice crunch of burnt sugar. We also thoroughly enjoyed smooth and creamy chilled custard which left a lingering trail of camomile in the mouth.
Lovely brunch plates, captivating desserts and great service; I can see why Five and Dime was full house when we visited. Brunch is served from 10am to 4.20pm on weekends. I recommend making reservations to avoid disappointment. If you wish to try the Golden Custard Lava Cake, do arrive early as servings are limited.

Simple menu with a few starters, mains and sides choices. Their weekend menu is more brunch like while weekday menu is more western like with food like pastas, fish & chips, cajun chicken etc. They were having 1-1 for some of their drinks. So we ordered a somersby apple cider. Slurpss. We ordered one of their starters – Mac & Cheese ($15). Quite different from the usual where it’s just macaroni and melted mozzarella cheese instead, this had an additional lobster sauce. You can taste bits of lobster chunks too! Its quite creamy more than cheesy though.
Then we ordered Seared Salmon ($23) and Mentaiko Pasta ($18). The pasta is cooked to al dente. It’s a creamy dish, and had good mixture of cod fish roe and mentaiko. Their portions are quite generous. Very filling after the meal.

I have been trying to eat brunch at Five & Dime Eatery for a while, but after three failed attempts (once no reservation, once I didnt take their 3 seatings on Sundays seriously, etc), I decided to forgo brunch here and take dinner with the Beau instead.

Located at 297 River Valley Road, Singapore 238338, one could say that Five & Dime Eatery is located at the end of a row of shophouses - but its pretty exterior gives it a quaint, standalone appearance, doesnt it? I like the pretty, white, European-looking outlook that makes it stand out from the rest of the shops in the same row.

The interior somewhat belies its quasi-elegant exterior, but exudes a warm, cosy ambience complete with chalkboard menus and colorful artwork adorning the walls. They have a cute clipboard menu, but their drinks menu is more adorable - resembling a passport.

Then they served my Salmon Rocket Salad (SGD$15.00) - flame torched salmon sashimi wrapped with arugula leaves, with wasabi mirin dressing. It was a combination of two of my favorite things - salmon sashimi and arugula leaves! The salmon sashimi was saccharine and rather fresh, made all the more tasty with overtures of smokiness because it was torched on the underside.

Next, our shared main course of Mentaiko Pasta (SGD$18.00) came - spaghetti tossed in creamy mentaiko topped with cod fish roe - the pasta was rather springy but dry - there was no sauce detected, much less creamy. The palatable spicy cod roe made up for the lack of gravy though.

We also shared a side of Spicy Miso Wings (SGD$7.00) - 6 pieces of half wings tossed in spicy miso sauce - juicy, spicy and sapid in flavor. It tasted like tomato-paste chicken with a heavy burst of saltiness, so after the first few impressive bites, we both agreed that the taste was a little overwhelming. You have to eat it with bread, rice or pasta to neutralise the flavors.

G had cravings for brunch so we decided upon Five & Dime, located on a quiet stretch along River Valley Road. With a white minimalist exterior, this cafe stands out from the colourful buildings beside it. Step inside and soak in the New York vibes.
Five & Dime pride themselves for serving unpretentious, quality food. Prices are reasonable and I can see myself revisiting if Hubby’s is free. With the nearest MRT (Somerset) 10-15 mins walk away, it’s certainly not the most accessible cafe around. More convenient to drive here; free parking is available behind. There is a bus stop a few steps away but unfortunately for me, none of the buses stop near where I live.
Ah, I notice Hot Chocolate ($6, additional $1 for iced) on the menu. I have a thing for hot chocolate and I am glad to report that this is decent. For those worried about your calorie count, skimmed milk is available on request. Brownie point for the nostalgic gem biscuits instead of the typical cookie.
The simplicity of an egg poached to perfection, on warm brioche, is the ultimate comfort food. Here, we have Eggs Benny ($16) served with bacon, mesclun greens, breakfast potatoes and fruit salad.
Egg Mayo and Bacon Panini ($12) was equally good. The seasoning is spot on and the crispy bacon added just the right amount of saltiness to the egg mayo. You can’t see much on the bacon from the front view so I took another picture of the back to show the portion of bacon in the sandwich, which was just right. I didn’t feel guilty after devouring this so I ordered dessert.
I was quite miffed with the Truff’s Earl Grey Chocolate Tart ($9). For one, I expected more for something close to $10. While the chocolate rich and decadant, the earl grey flavour was too subtle and didn’t quite get off the ground. Also, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or passion fruit sorbet could have come in handy to tone down the cloying richness of the chocolate.
Another brownie point for the friendly service; all smiles and efficient. The staff who took our picture was patient; she suggested taking from this angle when the previous pictures didn’t turn out nicely.

For my first visit, i decide to go ahead and just try the mentaiko pasta since it's the signature dish plus i love pasta anyway =)

It looks lovely when they served me the dish. For $18, i find the portion ok! The pasta was cooked to perfection in an al dente way, nice and not too creamy presentation with a gorgeous amount of mentaiko as the topping. Mix everything together and you get a perfect formula.

Strongly recommend this if it's your first visit. I ended my meal with a cup of flat white! Day well spent =)

Salmon Rocket $15
Gosh I love this!! Well, it might also be because I was too hungry. 5 generous slices of flame torched salmon sashimi wrapped with argula leaves, with wasabi mirin dressing. I couldn't taste any wasabi in the dressing though. I really love the torched flavour of the salmon sashimi (definitely on my list of favourite food) and it went really well with the flavoursome dressing of the salad.

Matcha Latte $7
I could feel a heavy powdery texture after I took my first sip which wasn't very pleasant. The matcha flavour was strong on this one. My only gripe was the powdery texture, and I think I might prefer this to Starbuck's version. It would be perfect if it was hotter too.

Fish & Chips $20

Battered shark catfish fillets served with hand cut fries. The fries were really unique. They were covered in the batter used for the fish and the batter was so crispy and thin. The fries did not taste like the typical french fries. They looked like fresh potato strips covered with batter. Instead of the usual kind of fish used in fish & chips, here they use catfish fillets. Some of the fish were soft and slightly mushy while the rest scored right in terms of texture. They also went very well with the tartar sauce which tasted slightly different from the typical tartar sauce. I am guessing it might be because they use japanese mayonnaise and also added egg? As the fish and chips were deep-fried, they were a little oily.

Mentaiko pasta $18
Finally tried the highly raved mentaiko pasta! Spaghetti tossed in creamy mentaiko topped with more cod fish roe. It had a fishy taste due to the cod fish roe. I find that it is better to share among 2 as the dominating flavour for the pasta is only the mentaiko so it may be gelat to finish the whole plate by yourself.

Lastly, service was friendly and I appreciated that!

It was a satisfying meal with CC and certainly worth the journey although it was one of our most (if not most) expensive cafe adventures to date.

Food and drink wise, the chocolate SGD6++ was good but a little too sweet for me as I like bitter taste more. We order egg bens SGD16++ and big brekkie SGD22++. The sautéed mushroom and home roasted potato were the best side dishes, I prefer the scrambled egg compared to poached egg.

The prices offered was a little pricey though. Despite that, I had the best service experience which it definitely worth every dollar I spent.

My partner ordered Fish & Chips @S$20.00. Battered shark catfish fillets served with hand-cut fries.Fish batter was very light and cripsy and the fish texture are soft and smooth. The fries tasted crispy and delicious as well. We enjoyed the deep fried battered fish as it was served in smaller pieces and makes us easier to take a quick bite of it.

I ordered Mentaiko Pasta @S$18.00. Spaghetti tossed in creamy mentaiko, topped with more cod fish roe. The pasta was cooked to al dente and the mentaiko sauce was tasted refreshing. But the I felt that the price is overpriced as it does not served any other ingredients except for mentaiko and cod fish roe. I saw some reviews come with yakitori skewer but mine does not come with it. Not sure if the menu had some changes though.

The thick slices of fresh chewy salmon really taste great with no stinky fishy smell in it. The lettuces are very crunchy and fresh as well. THe wasabi dressing make this dish very appetizing and tasty. Delicious!

Five & Dime offers quite an exquisite array of cocktails, which seem to be quite the catch. But it was just past morning and we were looking more for a couple of perk me ups for that lazy Sunday morning — Coffee! But for the young at heart, there's nothing like a frothy Banana Milkshake complete with rainbow sprinkles on top, which tasted really good with the right amount of consistency!

I’d only been to Five & Dime once before, for dinner, more than a year back but I distinctly remember how amazing their Mentaiko Pasta ($18) was. Definitely a must-try whilst you’re there. We were also recommended the Eggs Benny ($16), which didn’t disappoint one bit. The pair of poached eggs looked and tasted just about perfect, with a good and proportionate coat of hollandaise sauce going on.

It might have been the eggs and warm brioche taking centre stage on the plate but the breakfast potatoes and fruit salad did put up a fair supporting act. I certainly appreciated the latter for the two mouthfuls of freshness to ease the heavy combination of egg yolk and hollandaise.

On the whole, I adore the food and decor at Five and Dime in addition to its homey and wholesome atmosphere. My only qualm is its slight lack of convenience. Whilst there is a bus stop just opposite the building, the restaurant/cafe is a fair bit of a walk from the nearest MRT station, Somerset. Drivers needn’t worry about parking because the eatery has their very own car park just past the bright red gates on its left. It’s free too!

It was a Sunday and we made reservations in advance before we went; was a good thing to do as it was almost full house. I got the usual eggs benedict, and having tried so many, this one is rather disappointing. Firstly, the bread used is thick and dry, we all disliked it; second, the hollandaise sauce is tasteless. The only thing I liked about the dish was that small serving of fruits. We also shared the earl grey tart for dessert, which costs around $13 with 2 additional scoops of ice cream. Ov

Overpriced and there wasn't any earl grey taste at all.

the five & dime chocolate ($6) was really interesting! this has to be one of the most unique hot chocolates i've ever tried. there was a subtle hint of hazelnut in it that give it a whole new dimension. it was a pretty small cup though!

we ordered the calamari ($8) for our starter. yup we had a starter for brunch haha! it was covered with a thin layer of flour and fried to a crisp that shattered in your mouth to reveal fresh springy calamari within.

the big brekkie ($22), which, true to its name, was huge. it consisted of your choice of sunny side up or scrambled eggs, pork bacon, chicken chipolata sausages, baked beans, sauteed mushrooms and thick toast. this is your safe go-to order if you want to try everything. i loved how the sunny side ups looked!
they were done so neatly and purely
the baked beans were really interesting, with a slightly spicy mexican-like sauce. slightly awkward was the thick toast though. it didnt come with any spread, and nothing on the plate seemed appropriate to go with it.

the buttermilk pancakes ($15) have got to be one of the best pancakes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe that's the secret - buttermilk! i should totally try this out sometime. the pancakes were super fluffy, yet dense enough that it didnt feel airy. it comes with a choice of chipolata sausage or pork bacon. i felt that the sausages were slightly on the bland side, but at least that made them feel healthier.

the corn beef hash ($16) was something different that you rarely find at other cafes! the corn beef was pretty fragrant, quite interesting! it came with two beautiful sunny side up eggs and breakfast potatoes. the potatoes were super yummy! they were beautifully seasoned, slightly mashed and just simple comfort food.

the eggs benny ($16) were balanced atop a slice of brioche toast that was so incredibly fluffy and crispy at the same time, i loved it! it came with mesclun greens, which balanced the dish wonderfully, the breakfast potatoes (yay score!) and fruit salad - a quirky combination of fruits including kiwis, grapes, strawberries and bananas.

finally, the french toast ($15) came with a choice of pork bacon or chipolata sausage and fruit salad as well! i loved the texture of the thick toast that was fluffy, with a good amount of chewiness. i felt the flavour of the french toast could be further enhanced though. but with the maple syrup that came with it, it was pretty alright

the service was very pleasant as well, and we had a wonderful experience.
