I was introduce to this joint by a friend who worked in one of the offices in Suntec. There were very good reviews from the papers with regards to their Shiok Maki. IT really has to be one of the most sinful sushi ever! Imagine charcoal-grilled eel, avocado and rice wrapped with salmon and topped with generous amount of mayonnaise.. thats not all, the final icing on the cake would be the fish roe! Open your mouth wide and take it all in one mouth! It is orgasmic I tell you!!
It leaves you wanting more..hehehe. But okay, right after the 3rd piece I bet you will feel bloated. So don't overkill it !

Next, I also tried the pidan tufo. Again it is a sinful dish! The creamy pidan sauce is heavenly! ( to those who love pidan of coz..strictly for pidan lovers ~! ) Looking at the photo now is making me crave for some of this ~~ It is one of the best pidan toufu I have ever eaten

Another of my fav.sushi at this joint would be the pidan maki. It is almost like the pidan toufu , just that the main is changed to a sushi roll.

Okay, this diner also serves the usual sashimi and udon etc. Not everything is so sinful as the ones mentioned above

I guess it was kinda late by the time we reach there, around 10 pm, and the restaurant was about to close.

Of course, the first thing we ordered was Shiok Maki!! There are two types of Shiok Maki, generation 1 & 2. Shiok Maki 1 is a combination of Unagi (eel) wrapped with salmon and Shiok Maki 2 contains tempura (crispy prawn) wrapped with salmon. The salmon sashimi serving is generous and it was topped with ebiko roe, drizzled with their heavenly mayo and cheesy sauce. I am not a fan of ebiko roe but this combination is simply orgasmic!!! We tried generation 2 as my friend does not like Unagi. It is most definitely worth the money!!! I can feel the whole sushi combi just melting in my mouth, yummmmmmm.

We also ordered the Seafood Fried Rice and Eel Omelette. Both tasted ordinary. I guess their specialty is in their makis. The Iced Green Tea was surprisingly sweet as I was expecting an authentic bitter taste. There was not much of an ambience as the both of us was squeezed in between 2 couples. The place was packed and they had inadequate staff. I think I only saw 2 staff in the whole place doing all the work.

But I'm so going back there to try Shiok Maki 1!!! And probably gen 2 as well and the other makis!!

This place has been reviewed and blogged countless times so decided to make time for a trip down to see what exactly the hype was. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed. The crabby maki ordered was very ordinary. I thought that the mayo seemed overdone and made the entire taste too queasy. Mayo fans will like this dish I guess. The crab itself was quite little and the roe itself was not totally fresh.

Recommended for their signature 'Shiok Maki', it indeed left me feeling shiok and satisfied at the end of our meal. Don't expect good service at the constantly packed bar, and be sure to state all your requests (cutlery, extra servings of sauces, drinks etc) at one go when you manage to grab hold of their service crew. But well, with a satisfying meal, I'm pretty willing to forgo the service!

Seafood Fried Rice ($10)
Compared to all the makis, this is perhaps the most value-for-money dish. I was told by my friend who's a frequent patron that this doesn't do justice to their usual standards. I was appalled when greeted with such poorly presented plate of fried rice, with prawns and rice tossed messily over the plate, and many sticky balls of rice clumped together. Taste-wise, I liked how there was the taste of 'wok-hei' (the flavour infused when you fry quickly over very high heat, with very slight burnt taste), and just enough flavour of the egg. I thought the seafood was a tad overcooked though, it lost the juiciness and natural sweetness, being overwhelmed by the entire flavour of the fried rice.

A decent plate in my opinion, though I would have been more satisfied without all the lumpy portions that weren't fried properly, and a stronger taste of seafood to live up to what it's named.

Crappy Maki ($18)
Mesmerised by the super generous serving of fish roe, this caught my attention straight away. With soft shell crab at the core, complemented with a sinful slab of swordfish belly and seemingly free-flow fish roe, this definitely packs a punch! I'm usually afraid of soft shell crabs being over fried, leaving a bitter after taste and feeling of being too oily, but this was done just right. It had a very thin yet crisp later of batter, and didn't leave the sickening oily feel after that. The crispiness was then caught up with the smooth and fattening swordfish belly.

Shiok Maki ($16.80)

This is the signature, which I'm told that it's only prepared by the boss of the restaurant. It's perhaps the only dish that's prepared on the bar counter top instead of the kitchen like all other dishes. A seemingly simple dish with the combination of unagi and avocado wrapped in seaweed and rice, it was all brought to another level when coupled with the sauce! Though creamy, the slight tanginess added a refreshing twist such that it doesn't leave you feeling 'jelat' but instead wanting more after each bite! And of course, there can never be enough fish roe! (;

Shiok Maki Gen 1 at (S$16.80)! Each piece of maki was creamy, moist and full of flavors. The Unagi and small chunks of avocado wrapped in a seaweed roll, covered with a gratinated Aburi Salmon with a Mayonnaise sauce with flying fish roe sparkingly on top of it. You have the crunchy and busting sound from the roes feels really that SHIOK! Seriously this is the best maki I had!

Service
Seems like under staff and service is very slow. You have to wait quite sometime before your food gets served and green tea to be refilled.

Ambience
Crowded and packed. Long queues are waiting outside the restaurant. Luckily we have booked in advance.

Price
Affordable pricing as its quality is good.

Recommendations / Tips
FOod is great but recommend to do reservations first before popping into the place else you will get to wait in the long snaky queue!

If there is only one food item you could have, it must be their signature Shiok Maki (S$16.80) and it is called "SHIOK" for a reason - grilled unagi (eel) and soft avocado strips wrapped in a lightly roasted salmon maki, topped with melted cheese, mayonaise and an abundance of flying fish roes. The sinful burst of flavours were incredibly amazing and has since, found a spot in my favourite maki list.

The lightly-salted Salmon Skin (S$4.00) has a delectable crisp to every single bite, which make this dish a good side kick. Come to think of it, salmon skin is a pretty awesome beer snack.

I felt cheated when the Asparagus Buta Maki (S$3.00) arrived on my table, as it was puny in comparison to the usual. However, this delightful wrap of slightly crisped bacon and juicy asparagus was a surprise to the palate.

Gindara Yaki (S$16.00, additional S$2 for rice and miso soup) - cod fillet baked with cheese and flying fish roes, completed with fresh cabbage salad and garlic miso sauce. It was a tad salty for my liking but the sinful, yet addictive combination was too alluring to resist.

Oh yes, one important thing to note is to wear your non-slip shoes because the floors were extremely oily and there were no grip, the older people there had to walk pretty slowly and I heard another customer complaining to the waitress, "why is your floor so slippery?"

We managed to order the last pair of smelt egg sushi (apparently we were sharing tables with strangers beside us and they ordered that as well). The waitress told them there were no smelt egg sushi left but thank God they gave the last pair to us!

We also ordered a piece of Age Tofu, it was so delicious and much better than Ramen Ten 10x, because the sticky skin does not stick to your chopsticks and the soup/sauce was not too saltish or sweet. The tofu doesn't break apart easily making it easy to eat!

The udon was chewy and although it's a tad standard lower than Sushi Tei, i would say its' satisfactory for the prices and the services in the restaurant.

One thing was lacking though - free flow green tea. I think Japanese restaurants should always have this service of free flow hot green tea, maybe sakae sushi started the trend or whatever, but without the green tea it doesn't really feel that Japanese. Besides, the name of the restaurant really seem like a chinese restaurant instead.

Located at the last level of Wisma Atria foodcourt, there's this Japanese stall at the far corner. Their food is great and fresh! Service is prompt too! I had their century egg tofu. It is really superb with generous serving of roes, bits of century eggs and tofu drenched with sesame sauce in a bowl. The portion is not too much and it cost $4. A little on the high side i find but it's totally worthy! It is a must have item!
