This must be the largest pineapple tarts I have ever seen. My sister highly recommended this to me and I was sold in by her recommendation to also order one box of ten pineapple tarts. Do order early as they are snapped up quite fast and prices increase nearer to cny.

Located at a nondescript shophouse just next to a Chicken Rice stall, it lies near the junction of Middle Road and Selegie Road, along the outskirts of town. Newspaper cuttings and photographs of celebrities and its specialties adorn the stall front, making for a rather cluttered and comical looking shop. Step through the narrow space and be greeted by a friendly lady who promptly informs you that all of their specialties are sold out and they have to be booked a day in advance. Lucky for me, they were in the midst of making a fresh batch and I only had to wait an hour to get my hands on their famous pineapple tarts and beancurd tarts.

Golf Balls aka Pineapple Tarts - My all time favourite Chinese New Year goodie, pineapple tarts! (Ok I like Bak Kwa as well) The balls were quite a size and came stuffed with copious amounts of not too sweet pineapple filling. The pastry itself was fluffy and a little buttery, making for an excellent dessert.

Bean Curd Tarts - First looks at the tarts and I was suitably impressed by the homogeneous texture of the filling and the crust as well the aroma emitted. I wasn't too impressed in the taste department though. True, it was smooth and lightly sweet but the pastry wasn't firm enough for one. Also, it didn't taste out of the ordinary. Pretty much like eating Tao Huey, albeit of a slightly denser form. Having said that (I'm rather contradictory am I not), it is still something new to me and I do like it enough to want to buy it again.

These pineapple tarts are notoriously hard to get, especially as the CNY season approaches. People pre-order a huge amount of tarts months before. LE Cafe will only take orders but not sell them directly to walk in customers during CNY period. BTW LE Cafe is also famous for their soya beancurd tart which is awesome! We managed to book a few bottles a few months ago at $20 per bottle. 1 bottle contains about 20 pieces of pineapple tarts. Prices will rise like bak kwa if you order closer to the CN

So what is the big fuss about these pineapple tarts (or pineapple balls/nuggets since they are shaped that way) They are actually just grossly oversized pineapple tarts. It's hard to pop the whole piece into your mouth. (I would usually cut it into half and share with someone). But everything else is almost done right. The pineapple fillings were good and generous. A tad too sweet. The pineapple fillings are encased in soft, crumbly pastry which compliment the pineapple fillings. They are so good, but it's too big and you will probably need to take at least two bites of each "ball" to properly savour it's goodness.

If you are desperate to get your hands on one of these bottle, do try going to their less crowded branch at Veerasamy Road where they might be able to sell you a bottle or two extra orders not claimed by anyone.

This was actually a gift from my relative who dropped by our house last week. He got this box of tarts from the outlet in Middle Road. These are not the ordinary egg tarts that we all know and are familiar with, but soya bean curd tarts. Yup - instead of using egg, this cafe uses soya bean to make the custard, making this a healthier choice of tart. Yup - instead of using egg, this cafe uses soya bean to make the custard, making this a healthier choice of tart. The custard, being made from soya bean curd, is much lighter in colour as compared to the normal egg tart. The taste is really good - it is lighter tasting and the custard is so smooth - almost as if you are eating bean curd, but this is the more flavourful version of it. The crust is more biscuit like instead of flaky which is also suitable given that the custard is already very soft and wobbly. The biscuit crust holds the custard and gives it a more firm bite. A box of 8 for 5 of us is not enough!

I loved the way the crisp, rich yet light pastry melted in my mouth. There's nothing to fault about the moist and well-textured jam as well. My sole complaint would be that the buttery fragrance of the tart crust was somewhat muted by the pineapple jam due to the low pastry to jam ratio.
The crumblier texture of the pastry in LE Cafe's pineapple tarts gives them an edge over those from Mirana Cake House. Nevertheless, those from the latter make an excellent alternative.
