I have always wanted to drop by Pow Sing for a hearty meal, but because it too far from home and parking is a nightmare, I refrained from asking Hubby to take me there. In my teens, my family often had our weekend dinners at this humble Hainanese chicken rice and Nonya cuisine restaurant.
The place looked almost the same as I remembered 11 years ago. But nobody cares much about the décor when the draw is delicious and reasonably priced food. Be warned, this place is not for you if you cannot stand crowd and noisy chatters. Service is efficient, albeit a little abrupt.
Hainanese Chicken ($5/serving) and Fragrant Rice ($1/serving) were fantastic, but not the best I had tried.
If you are craving for something for spicy, give the flavorsome Nonya Otak ($3/pc) a go. The tantalizing otak is thick and very substantial.
I wish we didn’t order the Sweet and Sour Fish ($12/$18/$24).
I have an unabashed love affair for Har Chiong Gai, and Pow Sing’s Crispy Fried Chicken Wing with Prawn Paste ($10/$15/$20) didn’t disappoint. Oh yes, it was C-R-I-S-P-Y, no doubt about that. The tender oily meat pulls out with ease.
Although not the most photogenic, Nonya Tauhu ($8/$12/$16) was another highlight. The delicately crisps exterior encases smooth egg tofu. Definitely a dish that will please most palates.
Kai Lan with Oyster Sauce ($8/$12/$16). Crunchy vegetables done just right, in a savory sauce.
There is no service charge and our total bill came up to $60.75 for 4 pax, which include 3 cups of Lime Juice ($2 each). This works out to be $15 per pax. Value for money, tasty dishes, I’d come here again and again if I could.
Valet service is available on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and PH after 6.30pm.

It's one of my favorite dish of the day. This dish tasted like Assam Fish Head, spicy yet a little sour but on the good side of the scale. Prawn is fresh and I love its sauce. (Y)

It's Pow Sing's award-winning dish but because I'm a carnivore, I can't appreciate the goodness of it, it feels soggy and I think it's more for elderly reminiscing the old times where they have this dish at home as well as those that have difficulty chewing food. This is for them.

Another of their 'best-seller' dish in Pow Sing. I think it just tasted normal, nothing like 'oh-so-awesome' but just traditional white chicken. The meat is not tender enough but the sauce added some point for this dish.

Crispy Tauhu that doesn't feel crispy, it's rather disappointing that it's not what I expected.
Instead of crispy, it's more like taupok ._.

Their fish is very fresh, all you get is tender white meat melting in your mouth. Their Assam sauce is powerful enough, not too spicy nor sour, best among those I ever eaten. (Y)(Y) It's the best among the rest (whoo)

The ambience is more family-like, having big tables like those 'zi-char' place. It's very noisy during peak period because everyone come in big group and they chat loudly so perhaps choose a better timing before dropping by. Beside Pow Sing Restaurant, they have one along the same stretch of road, namely Pow Sing Kitchen. It's their sub restaurant but mostly selling stuffs like 'Hor Fan', 'Chicken Rice' all these. If you are not in groups, maybe that is more suitable for you.

The level of spiciness of the chilli is rather minimum. The spiciness is not distinctive with little ginger or garlic taste and it has got a slight sweetness.

I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The Nonya deep fried tofu was pretty much deep fried egg tofu. But it was good. If there was additional flavoring added to the exterior of the fried skins, it was lost to me. This dish was recommended by the server as a popular item and I could guess why after having the first bite.

I come here quite often to have the chicken rice. They have 2 restaurants right next to eachother. I enjoyed both the roasted chicken and the white chicken. White chicken is still a slightly heathier choice as compared to the roasted one. I always requested for their breast meat. The amount given has always been generous. Both the chilli and garlic paste are really good and go well with the chicken and the rice.

The sumptuous dinner costs around $9 in total, inclusive of lime juice and service charge. The prices are definitely comparable to other famous chicken rice restaurants eg Five Star and Boon Tong Kee. For the quality of the food and the comfort of dining under air conditioning, I am certainly willing to pay that price.

It was a pretty expensive place to have chicken rice i must say, and everything is chargeable- ($0.30 for a cup of water and wet paper towels) but the food was pretty good!

I loved to dip my delicious steam chicken into their ginger, chilli and dark sauce- My own version the sauce to go with the meat.

Overall, a expensive but satisfying meal!

$5 per portion of chicken, $1 for steamed chicken rice.

Oh and do note that they charge GST!

After all, this is a food business and it is only natural for me to expect more from it. My mum’s Fish Head curry could easily win this hands-down.

Even my boyfriend didn’t quite like it. He took nothing more than a few small bits of the fish cos the taste was too strong for his liking. *?* Beats me too.

How can you call yourself a Singaporean when you don’t like fish head curry? Haha. But it meant more for the rest of us!

We also had the Sambal Cuttlefish Kang Kong. Taste wise, not bad. But what I really loved about this dish was the cuttlefish. It was melt-in-your-mouth smooth and soft.

And we ordered one spicy otah for each of us. Perhaps one of the best otahs I’ve tasted. Really good.

Those who’ve visited this restaurant would already know that the steamed chicken here is a popular favourite. Quite honestly though, it wasn’t meeting my expectations that evening. It's supposed to be good, but turned out not to be as tender and tasty as expected.

I would recommend this place for dinner. Just remember to come early!

!!! So, for those who love this slippery chicken bit, this is the place for you! (Weight watchers, stay far!)

Recent trip to this place, however, left me with mixed feelings.
Firstly, they opened another unit, just 1 unit away, selling roast items, which suggests that if you're sitting at the original unit, you can only eat what they offer and vice versa for the other unit. (At least, this is how the waitress at the original unit suggest to me. No signs of "cross-unit" menu items either.)

Secondly, I find the place dirty. Let me describe in detail. The floor is oily, so pity me as I had walked in with white shoes and was pretty sure my shoelaces, which were dangling around, would have been stained with whatever oil was on that floor. If you are bringing old folks, do take caution! Next, there were MANY dead flies in the container of chilli. When I informed the waitress, she simply took the next tables' condiments and pass to me (similar to the other tables, the container was left opened too, but no drowned flies in it!). Thankfully, she promptly aceded to my request for a fresh set of condiments from the kitchen (who knows whether the source in the kitchen is equally contaminated...but I'm still healthy!).

Lastly, one thing that often irks me is seeing waitresses/waiters pre-occupied with their own conversations in little groups, while diners are desperately trying to get their attention for the bill. Again, it has happened here.

Well, total amount spent (2 pax chicken rice + crispy tofu + barley drink) = $26.40

Hence, after this last experience, I'll probably visit the Tiong Bahrun Boneless Chicken Rice in Chinatown for my chicken rice fix in the future. Cheaper, same environment (though no A/C).

I love the chicken at pow sing restaurant at serangoon. My group of friends always like to go there for gathering so that we can order one whole chicken with many other dishes. The chicken is really delicious, the meat is very tender, the gravy that drenched the chicken is not too salty. They will also remove the bone for us, making it easier to eat. They have other dishes as well, all equally yummy but the chicken is the yummiest there!

Personally, I'm not a great fan of peranakan food - thus the remaining dish I tried such as Assam fish are quite normal to me.

Damage over there I felt its a little pricey thou.

If you have difficulties squeezing in chomp chomp, you might wish to visit here for a hearty meal.
