Scrumptious Dinner Smile May 26, 2015

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Dim Sum

Taking about having Dim Sum for dinner or supper.
Other then Dim Sum at 126 Eating House at Geylang, Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant will always be in the Dim Sum Supper List.
After hearing and reading a lot of rave reviews from my friends and fellow bloggers. I brought my boyfriend there for dinner.

Located at the heart of Jalan Besar, in the district of Little India, Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant had always been popular among Singaporeans and tourists. Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant opened for business in 1962 and had been around for more then 50 years.
Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant served a combination of both Hong Kong and ShangHai Dim Sum. They provides both air- conditioned as well as alfresco dining in the back alley.
If you are want to dine in the air conditioned part of the restaurant, I will advise you to be there early especially for dinner time to beat the queue.
If you are hungry when you reached the restaurant like me, you can skip the queue by choosing to sit at the non air-conditioned part of the restaurant or the alfresco dining.
Personally, I prefer the alfresco dining in back alley even though the lighting was quite bad for photo taking. I like the feeling that you are not dinning in the modern Singapore, it kind of bring you back in time when people dine at the road side.

Fried Mee Sua
This is one of Swee Choon's Signature dish, Fried Mee Sua. This plate of Fried Mee Sua may look easy to cook, however it requires a lot of skills. Normally, Mee Sua has this very soft texture and easily broken. The chef did a pretty good job in frying this plate of Mee Sua as the each strain of noodle is so springy and fragrant. The shredded cabbages and bean sprouts added crunch to the noodle. The most critical part that the chef had passed was that the plate of Mee Sua is not oily at all. I had also been not a lover toward carbohydrate, but this time round I really cannot stop eating the Fried Mee Sua.

Mee Sua Kueh
Other Mee Sua dishes by Swee Choon and also their Signature dish. However, this time round, I am not very impress with the Mee Sua Kueh. The Mee Sua Kueh is a creative version of carrot cake. The top layer is Pan Fried Crispy Mee Sua and the bottom layer is soft Mee Sua with Kueh. I feel that the Mee Sua Kueh was quite greasy. Not sure isn't that I had left it on the table for quite a while. My boyfriend did not really like it too. We both find the texture is too soft.

It sells all sorts of pretty food from cakes, sandwiches to all day brunch. Pardon me, it was really an impromptu visit and I promise to do the food "justice" by visiting it again with a proper camera. =p

It's probably confusing at your first visit, at least for me. We stood at the entrance for a good few minutes, waiting to be served but who knows, it is a free seating and self ordering concept cafe. So just go in, find yourself a seat and then go to the counter to make your order and pay at the cashier.

As we just had dinner, we ordered a cake (On-My Baby Crepe $8) and a pudding (Chocolate - $4.50) to share. Yup, the pudding was served in a milk bottle alike container, cute right?

The cake was pretty interesting with layers of crepe, strawberries, sponge cake and cream. But I must say, the cakes are rather expensive, $7.50 is the cheapest? Not your daily bakery to go, I guess....

On the other hand, the pudding was simply divine, must try! ^_^ The texture was almost like eating flavored cream. I started off eating the chocolate part, before I moved on to the original. Both were good on its own. As I dipped the spoon deeper, to my delight, there was brown sugar/caramel at the bottom, which gave a very nice caramelized taste. With every spoonful, there were different "surprise". =)

The royal pudding seems to be the popular item here! I saw most of the diners ordered this.

Anyway, I liked it so much that I bought 3 more bottles home. Among the three, I liked the chocolate best, followed by mango and original flavour.

Yummy! ^_^

Soursop drink OK Jul 31, 2012
Categories : Hawker Centre | Juices

This stall used to be at the food centre opposite the botanic garden decades ago. They have since moved here from there for more than a decade too. This stall is famous for the soursop drink. They served it with quite a bit of soursop in the drink then added in the crushed ice to chill it. Each of this soursop is painstakingly extracted from the fruit to make into this drink. I would not mind paying a little higher for such a drink. This is definitely a cooling drink to recommend for the crazy hot weather we have these days.

Mutton Soup Smile Jul 24, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre | Chinese Soup

The hawker centre is huge and a lot of hawker variety here. the main problem is when your friend decides to sit all the way opposite of the stall you're buying from. I had the Mutton soup, the staff was friendly and prompt delivery upon payment. Watch out, just because there isn't a "queue", there actually is! because the other customers usually go buy something else and they will deliver to the table. Portion wise , I love the soup very much. it's very flavourful and it's "good for the man". The amount of pepper is just right and the taste of the mutton is reduced. The mutton is soft/tender paired off with the interesting chilli sauce dip.

Aura Brunch With A Good Varieties Smile Feb 29, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Italian | Bars/Lounges | Restaurant | High Tea

Aura occupied a unit on the fifth as the restaurant while directly above is the sky lounge. I thought it could be a great place for brunch with my mom on a Sunday. I tried making a reservation via the website twice but failed as it requires 24 hours lead time to reply. As such, on my second failed attempt, I decided to take the risk and walk-in early. Indeed, either go early, as early as 12 pm when it opens or make sure a reservation is made if after 1 pm.

Both the restaurant and the sky lounge offer different dinning experience with unsimilar ambience. The feel of the restaurant is more slanted to the fine dinning arena while the sky lounge offer an elegant, relaxed and casual dinning atmosphere. A reservation with tables next to the glass at the sky lounge would be a perfect dinning experience.

Sky Lounge

On weekdays, at the sky lounge, it offers Salad Buffet of roasted vegetables, salads and homemade breads.

When weekends arrived, an Ala Carte Menu is offered instead with as much as 12 selection, ranging from eggs, salad, sandwiches to pasta and sweets.

Restaurant

Over at the Aura Restaurant, the weekends Brunch Menu is available. I thought the Brunch Menu was a good way to try as many food as possible. It is priced at $48 per person for food only. If diners prefer to have free flow of Prosecco and Bellini, it is priced at $98 per person.

Swiftly the complimentary Focaccia bread was served once order was completed.

We were served with the pastas before the remaining apperitzer, I decided to start with Stracci with Duck Ragu. We were mesmerized by its taste immediately.

Next, was the Trofie with Truffle Pesto and Prawns. This isn’t for my mom at all. She tried and never turned to it for more. I was neutral though not exactly enjoying it. This surely isn’t for everyone due to the strong aroma from both the truffle and pesto resulting in some kind of acquired pungent flavour. Both the Stracci and Troffie were well made; smooth and soft to the chew.

Next, the Parma Ham with Musk Melon and Stracciatella & Tomato Bruschetta, Calarmari and Crab Crostini were served. Nothing outstanding about these. But the soft to the chew calamari is still worth highlighting.

3 choices for Mains with Sirloin with Asparagus and Red Wine Sauce and Hokkaido Scallops with Porcini and Beetroot as our order. The third was Black Cod with Tomato and Herb Crust.

Luckily, I agreed to Medium Rare for the Sirloin with Asparagus and Red Wine Sauce, otherwise, it would prove a challenge for my jaw. My mom doesn’t usually prefer beef actually wanted more after her first small piece.

Hokkaido Scallops with Porcini and Beetroot has good pairing of ingredients. As long as seafood is fresh, it can’t go too wrong.
Bailey’s & Hazelnut Feuillantine

We have both the Bailey’s & Hazelnut Feuillantine and Chestnut Pannacotta with Mandarin Coulis. I started with the former. Hazelnut flavour was strong while bailey was weak to savour. Moving to the latter, we were surprised by how the citrusy zest of orange could be in perfect harmony with the nuttiness chestnut. I was blown away by this dessert. As I have no expectation for it since I don't have good prior experience on anything chestnut.

Coffee and Tea were part of the Brunch. I have my usual Cappucino. I like the low acidity, full body and nutty cuppa.

Aura Restaurant has a classy dinning environment though it gets noisy when the restaurant was at 80% capacity. The service staff that attended our table was warm, chatty and certainly professional; introducing us the menu and making recommendation to us to help the decision process. Coming to food, we felt they were fresh. Most of which leaned towards our preference except for the more adventurous Triofe with Truffle Pesto and Prawns.
