A Disastrous Dining Experience Cry Sep 08, 2013

We were extremely disappointed with our visit to The Dunearn, both in terms of the food quality and especially so for their unacceptable service level.

Upon entering, we were quickly ushered to our seats by a grumpy looking waitress who was rather impatient with us when we queried on some of the food items. Her answers were mostly a repetition of the information shown on the menu and provided little or no value-addedness to us.

The starters were served pretty shortly but where's the bread?! This is one item which should have been served almost immediately upon seated at any reputable fine dining restaurant. We found this rather strange and requested if we could have some bread to go along with the soup we ordered. And guess what, to our horror, the waitress actually replied, "NO BREAD" when we saw her serving a basket of bread to a Caucasian couple just moments ago. This is simply atrocious and we demanded to see the manager regarding this. The manager took some time to attend to us (with a cold basket of bread in hand) and came up with some lame excuse that the bread was not ready previously to pacify us, like seriously?!

Here's a snap shot of our orders that day. Don't be fooled by the visually appealing presentation as we found the quality to be befitting of the ambience and price we're paying for. Looks can be deceiving.

Iberico Ham, Cantaloupe Jello and Petite Salad
One of the better dishes served that meal. I found the salad and fruits jello to be pretty refreshing and complemented the ham well.

Chicken Gumbo
A disaster. The soup was quite salty with tiny bits of chicken skin (where's the meat this time round?!) floating in it. We were expecting something more hearty and were quite disappointed with what was served.

Baked Spatchcock with Red Wine Jus
A decent dish but nothing impressive about it. It somehow seemed slightly overcooked as the meat was tougher than usual.

Mullet Confit with Light Lemongrass Emulsion
The fish was well cooked but I could hardly taste any hint of lemongrass (one of my personal favourite scents) at all! This dish should have been more aptly named "Mullet Confit with Cream Sauce"...

Mango Mille Crepe with Chocolate Sorbet
Another disaster, period. The Mille Crepe was frozen and had this weird refrigerator taste which was a major turn off. The Sorbet was no much better as it was totally icy and hard. In retrospect, this dessert might just jolly well have been in cold storage for as long as we could image!

Overall, this will be our first and very last visit. Disappointing food plus frustrating service – couldn't image what more could go wrong!

Plunging Standards  Cry Sep 07, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

To begin, the food service was crawling to a halt, taking more than 20 minutes for our food to arrive, although service speed was pretty decent.

The standard of the food had dropped noticeably for the Flame-Grilled Ribeye ($44++), with the meat tasting a tad stale and lacking in flavor - a far cry from my first few experiences with the restaurant at JCube. What happened? To make matters worse, the price had increased as well!

To conclude, it is already disastrous when customers pay good money for mediocre food. It is tragic and doom-spelling when customers have to pay an increased price for mediocrity too! Please bring back my good memories of Chilli's and improve the quality of the food, if the pricing cannot be amended. I really love this place - it's so sad =((!

Not Worth the Hype (as usual) Cry Sep 05, 2013

We finally got to savour the much raved about bakes of Tiong Bahru Bakery but to our dismay, we left disappointed. Service was quite poor as the waitress was rather impatient with us and constantly displayed a "black face" while we were placing our orders.

Black Squid Ink with Pesto Sandwich ($9.50 nett)
Totally regretted buying their supposedly signature sandwich. This has got to be the weirdest tasting sandwich I've ever eaten!

The bun tasted stale (possibly due to the squid ink) with an overdose of pesto sauce. Although smoked salmon and parma ham are among my favourite sandwich fillers, these two ingredients clearly did not go well with each other. I am definitely steering clear of this at all cost.

Cereal Ham Sandwich ($9.00 nett)
This cereal sandwich was surprisingly airy and fluffy. The three thick slices of Virginia ham, coupled with rocket salad and mustard sauce, was a delight to savour. Overall, a decent choice, albeit the hefty price tag.

Gone are the hay days... Cry Sep 01, 2013

It's been a long while since our last visit (about 2-3 years back) to Sofra and when we chanced upon their dining deal online, we decided to pay our "old friend" a visit. Sadly, their food quality seemed to have dipped significantly from what we remembered. Service quality was also a far cry from its glorious past sad

Sultan Kebab ($15.90++)
The first thing that struck us was "Boy, the portion had shrunk so much!" They used to serve generous portions of solid mutton, but this time round, it was simply small chunks of dry tasting mutton laced with cheese. The meat was quite tough and lacked the fragrance and spices that used to whet our appetite.

Iskender Kebab ($15.90++)
Yet another disappointment. The thinly sliced chicken bits were dry and lacked the tender mouth-watering texture and aroma that used to make us drool over. The Greek Yoghurt was a refreshing addition to the otherwise average tasting sauce.

Shish Kebab ($17.50++)
Finally something that made our trip worth it. The Shish Kebab (chicken) was well marinated, tender and juicy. The sides, consisting of couscous, salsa, preserved vegetables and onions were appetizing and complemented the main dish well.
Shish Kebab

Sofra Fish ($16.90++)
The fish was surprisingly quite well done. The meat was very soft and grilled to perfection. The sauce was pretty mild, but one could taste the multitude of spices and effort put into making this concoction.

Asure ($5.40++)
This traditional Turkish dessert, consisting of a variety of nuts and beans, was pretty delicious and unique, though it was a tad too sweet. The chewy texture paired with the grainy crunch was a delight to savour.

Overall, the inconsistency in food quality and sub-par service was a major let down. Will probably only return when there's another promotion in store.

Disappointed selection Cry Sep 01, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Ice Cream and Gelato

Was quite disappointed with our visit to their branch at Bugis Junction as the selection was very limited. Where are the signature flavours such as Peanut Butter Galaxy & Strawberry Skydive?!

We eventually settled for Strawberry Chessecake and Chocolate Praline after trying a couple of other flavours such as the Red Velvet Cake, Birthday Cake and Pistachio which we found to be too sweet for our liking.

The texture was average (not as creamy as we had expected) and the ice cream melted pretty quickly. The strawberry bits seemed to have been frozen for quite some time as it was icy hard and lumpy. Their Chocolate Praline was the better flavour we had that day.

Overall, it's not really worth the money for the quality you'll be getting.
