Normal Japanese sets OK Sep 18, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sukiyaki/Shabu Shabu

Me and my dining companion were wandering a bit aimlessly in Star Vista, thinking about where to go for lunch. A smart guy spotted us, handed us a flyer for this shabu shabu place and so here we are.

I decided to order a healthier japanese hotpot dish - the beef miso lunch set which comes with a bowl of rice. The miso soup base was light but still tasty enough. There was plenty of vegetables within and also generous thin slices of lean beef. Generally quite a decent meal.

Beef Miso Nabemono set - $12.50++

My companion had the honey Wagyu Beef set. I couldn't tell the difference between the wagyu beef and the supposedly lower-grade beef in my hotpot - they tasted pretty much the same. You cannot taste the honey in the marinade, although there's a slight hint of sweetness. The side wafu salad given was a generous amount though, and the tofu and miso soup was ok.

The place is small but that means you can get the attention from the service staff easily.

Honey Wagyu Beef with Rice Set - $15.90++

Ordinary fish soup OK Sep 06, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre

It's my first time here at this food centre with a group of friends. There are quite a reasonable number of stalls still open after 8 pm on a week day. My friend recommended this stall to me, so I ordered the sliced fish soup to try. The fish slices were tender and fresh. However, the soup base was a bit too bland for me. Perhaps if you like your soup really light-tasting, you can try this stall.

- The stallfront. Most likely the stall has moved to #01-2791, but it's still in the same food centre.

- Sliced fish soup with mee sua ($3.50)

Ordinary bak kut teh OK Sep 06, 2013

Categories : Bak Kut Teh

Came here with my friends (4 of us in total) to try out this new bak kut teh stall.

The ginger sesame chicken was surprisingly good. It's tasty and has a very home-cooked feel to it. It's a tad oily though. But this dish fares better than the other 2 bak kut dishes we tried.

Ginger sesame chicken - $5.80

The bak kut teh here was not too bad but it's nothing spectacular. You can ask for a top-up of the soup which is herbal in taste. The bak kut was tender enough and the tau kee was ok too. Still alright if you are not setting your standards too high.

Small bowl of bak kut teh - $5.80

For the dry bak kut teh, it was cooked with slices of dried cuttlefish and lady fingers. Also not bad in taste but I've had a better version at other places before. The dish is ok if you are a fan of cuttlefish. Otherwise, it might lend a slightly "fishy" taste to the bak kut.

Dry bak kut teh - $6.80

The salted vegetables and braised peanuts were also alright in taste. But again, nothing too special.

Salted vegetables ($1.80) and braised peanuts ($1)

We tried to order the honey lemon jelly but unfortunately it was sold out already.

Well, generally the bak kut teh here is not bad but I probably will not come back again because I've tried better places elsewhere.

Char siew noodles ok OK Sep 06, 2013
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Coffeeshop | Roasted Meat

Rong Kee specialises in roasted meats, so I decided to try their char siew wanton noodles today. For $3, the amount of char siew given was generous. The meat was tender and well-caramelized, with a mix of fat within. The noodles were cooked till springy and the sauce flavoring was quite ok as well. Actually, I will rather they do not give any wanton and just focus on the char siew. The wantons were pitifully small and had almost no meat. Instead of adding a plus to the meal, it actually brings down the overall taste. Hmmm when I had my meal today, there was only this stall and another economic rice stall open in the whole coffeeshop. I believe that once again, it might be renovation time for the coffee shop and getting in of another round of tenants.

Ordinary beef noodles OK Sep 06, 2013

Categories : Food Court | Noodles

As I'm quite fond of beef noodles, I decided to try this stall at AMK Hub. Generally, the taste was not bad, acceptable for a usual foodcourt normal standard. Soup had a little bit of herbs in it, and the beef slices given were quite generous. The sauce accompanying the beef noodles was nothing special and just a little salty for my liking. Oh well, it's still ok to try the beef noodles here. Just that it's nothing special.
