In the heart of Tanjong Pagar, beside the hawker centre, coffee shops and restaurants around there, there is also a food court on the 4th floor of Amara Shopping Mall, another popular lunch time eating place for the Tanjong Pagar CBD crowds. Amara Shopping Mall has been in the district for quite some time already and their selection of food stalls there are popular and well liked by the CBD crowds.

There is a stall there at Amara Shopping Mall Food Court, that sells Japanese Cuisine and it is sold by the locals, there is an inevitable debate and discussion on whether non-Japanese natives like us locals would be to cook and produce authentic Japanese cuisine as good as the Japanese. For Benkei Japanese Cuisine, I believe that they are able to match up to the standards and authenticity of the native Japanese cooking.

During lunch time, they have a nice steady crowd of customers queuing up to order their food from them, quite a wide variety of Japanese set meals at a decent price too ! They also opened for the evening crowds too for dinner and having eaten at their stall for a number of years already, it’s still as good, tasty and delicious! The folks at Benkei Japanese Cuisine stall are a bunch of friendly folks and it’s nice chatting with them, if they have the time since they can get really busy during lunch time !

If you are there at the Tanjong Pagar Shopping Mall during lunch time, do drop by and take a look, they have quite a variety of Japanese cuisine dishes, all at a great value for money pricing and the portion is quite big too. When I visited them recently, I chose the Saba-Chicken set, like it a lot and the miso soup taste great too !

Customers return to them for their quality, quantity and pricing, that's why they have a queue of customers at the stall especially during lunch time. During the evening, whereby most CBD workers would go home or out of their area for dinner, you can still find their stall open during the dinner hours till maybe 7-8pm or till they sold out their set meals and food.

Do drop by and enjoy Benkei Japanese Cuisine - the Amara Stall !

Formerly tucked away in a small shophouse along Purvis Street, in hot and humid conditions, patronised and followed by beef noodles lovers, I had enjoyed their beef noodles at their Purvis Street outlet and did not realise that they moved to the other street beside them and gone through a revolutionary change in their layout, design, decoration and history.

Before I go further, let me introduce their famous trademark dish, the Hock Lam Street Popular Beef Kway Teow. The gravy is not too thick, nice and smooth (if you choose the dry noodles option), holding it up well even when the noodles/kway teow is mixed with the beef portions.

There are different varieties of beef portions that you can order with your beef kway teow and I chose the mixed Beef dry Kway Teow set, a nice mixture of beef slices, beef balls, beef intestines and liver.

The beef portions are tender and tasty, not overcooked and definitely fresh. Take a closer look at the crushed peanuts and pickled vegetables on my beef noodle, that's 2 key ingredients that makes it special too ! The chili and fish sauce, along with their soup, is a must have combination of spices and seasoning to complement your beef noodles/kway teow.

The current outlet at 38 Seah Street is so much nicer and better, in terms of floor size (hold more customers), nice air-conditioning, beautiful walls fitted with history of Hock Lam Beef, nice tables and chairs. From the days I had their beef kway teow at Purvis Street a few years ago, their standards have remained and their beef kway teow still taste just as authentic and delicious.

If you around Beach Road / Seah Street area, do drop by and try them out !

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hawker Centre | Roasted Meat

The lunch crowds at Tanjong Pagar Plaza are usually crowded and packed, with many people eating and queuing for their favourite food stalls. Among those stalls at Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market and Food Centre, there is roast meat specialist that stands out, with its queue, popularity and very yummy looking roast pork, char siew and roast duck.

This is the Old Tiong Bahru Roast Specialist and I tasted their Char Siew and Roast Pork combination with boiled egg. Nice meat portion sizes, tasty, the roast pork was tender and skin was crispy. It wasn't too oily nor having too much fats either ! The gravy for the roast pork and char siew was sweet and the thickness is just nice for my liking an taste great on the rice.

Even though I didn't get to try the Roast Duck today, looking at the Roast Duck from the outside, I am pretty sure, it is just as delicious ! Besides their roast meat selection, they also have noodles and wanton soup, something I would like to try in the future. Oh yeah, if you would like to order a who roast pig, you can contact them too !

Old Tiong Bahru Roast Specialist is one of the food stalls that it would be worth the time and queue for their roast duck, roast pork and char siew !

Go check them out today & have a tasty hearty roasted meat meal !

Categories : Hainanese | Chicken Rice

Chicken rice, is one of our popular dishes in Singapore, well known and well liked by both the locals and tourists too. Hainanese Chicken Rice is a wonderful cuisine, loved it greatly and I do regularly eat Hainanese Chicken Rice.

Situated in one of Singapore's oldest shopping centre, on the 5th floor is this food outlet known as Hainanese Delicacy, a Hainanese Chicken Rice store that had been there for quite a number of years. During lunch time, it's always crowded and have lots of people queuing up to eat there. One of their specialty is that their Hainanese Chicken Rice is boneless and customers don't have to take away the bones before enjoying their chicken meat.

Take a look at the Hainanese Chicken, it's tender and delicious, nicely cooked and not oily. The sauce that accompanies the Hainanese Chicken taste great too, bringing out the flavour of the Hainanese Chicken, a perfect compliment. For the rice, you would be to taste the aroma and chicken flavour that are inside the rice, not too soggy and their cooking style suits my taste buds. Their chili is not too spicy and have lots of “power” spiciness nevertheless, mix it nicely with their ginger paste and thick black soy sauce, you have an awesome combination for your Hainanese Chicken Rice.

Hainanese Delicacy has been there for many years and they still maintains their high standards of Hainanese Chicken Rice. Till date, they still have a loyal and strong following customer base at their outlet, this alone, is a strong testimonial to their Hainanese Chicken Rice and that's why they are a specialist in Hainanese Chicken Rice.

If you are looking for Hainanese Chicken Rice, Hainanese Delicacy at Far East Plaza is an outlet for you to visit and enjoy them !

Nasi Lemak , a very popular rice dish that comes along with many different dishes filling up the plate, different varieties between different cultures in South East Asia. What does Nasi Lemak means ? In the most simplest analogy, it’s rice cooked in cream whereby the rice would be soaked with coconut milk, steamed/cooked and pandan leaves would be thrown in to give a nice fragrance to the rice.

Ponggol Nasi Lemak, cooked and prepared by the Chinese, is a popular outlet for the residents living in the Upper Serangoon/Hougang area and people from other parts of Singapore too, especially in the late hours and a highly popular supper location. What makes this Ponggol Nasi Lemak that popular ? Before I go in depth further, take a look at the combination of dishes on my Nasi Lemak !

My plate is filled with ikan bilis (deep fried anchovies) with peanuts, egg, deep fried chicken wing and curry vegetables. There are other dishes available as well and it would be up to you what kind of combinations you would like to have on your plate of Nasi Lemak.

Let’s start with the rice, nice and delicious fragrance, the ikan bilis with peanuts is nicely fried and crispy. The chicken wing / chicken drumstick is one of the main attraction there and it is highly popular among the people queuing up for the Nasi Lemak. The sambal chili is not too spicy and I am fine with it, although I personally would prefer it to be more "powerful" a.k.a spiciness and sambal chili fragrance.

That's always a queue for Ponggol Nasi Lemak, that shows its popularity and following among Singaporeans. Even for me who live on the western side of Singapore, I do go there once a while for Nasi Lemak and would endorse it as one of my favourite Nasi Lemak eating places!

Of course, there are many different combinations of dishes that can accompany your Nasi Lemak set, what kind of dishes combination would you like to have ? You have to visit Ponggol Nasi Lemak and choose your favourite dishes combination !

Enjoy the delicious and tasty Ponggol Nasi Lemak !
