Moved by their sweetness. Smile Jan 31, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

The Sweet Movement sits in a cozy little corner of Somme Road, a stone's throw away from City Square mall. It is under the same flagship of D.C Bakery (or Dessert Cup Bakery from Raffles City). They now serve petite bite-sized desserts accompanying great coffee, and the serene atmosphere and environment makes The Sweet Movement a great option for a lazy afternoon read. This hole-in-the-wall dessert cafe is a one-stop dessert haven to satiate my hunger pangs for sugar cravings... and I thought it may an ideal party place or even for business meetings!

From time to time, they will change their decorations with sweet little notes. These quirky notes are usually quotes that would provoke your thoughts, providing inspiration if you need any.

Do note that these bite-sized pieces are not actual sizes as it was for their pre-launch event. Do visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TheSweetMovement?directed_target_id=0 for more details! smile You can also message their Facebook admin, although they do take quite awhile to reply because they are rather busy with managing both The Sweet Movement and Dessert Cup Bakery.
Still, I love the service in the place as the staff is very friendly and smiley.

Vanilla Milk Jam - SGD2.80 ea, SGD10 for 4 pcs
This is a delicious crispy toast topped with their homemade vanilla milk jam. It is rich in flavour and sweet at all sides! The vanilla was strong and fragrant to my tasting, I felt like I was eating crispy vanilla ice-cream.

Milk Caramel Jam - SGD2.80 ea, SGD10 for 4 pcs
Similar to the vanilla jam, a daub of caramel is added to the toast. It was a tad too sweet for me, but my friends loved it! It was as crunchy as potato chips and I think it'll make a great replacement for popcorn in the movie theatres.

Left: Nutty Seasalt Caramel; Center & Left: White Chocolate muffins - SGD3.50
Forget about molten gooey lava cakes. The muffins that The Sweet Movement delivers is a perfect decadent dessert! I just can't help but want more and more. This isn't the creamy sort of paste, but it sticks true in making their muffin base the focus. The decorations are just a bonus, but the warm moist texture is really fresh as they bake it fresh daily!

The coffee has a strong aroma and is very rich. I think it's quite a strong fix which may leave me a sleepless night if I drank it too late. The froth sits perfectly on the coffee essence, and they are quite good at their latte art too!

I would prefer their latte as compared to their cappuccino because of the rich smooth finish made by the coffee. The cappuccino, as expected, was too frothy to my liking! It'll make a lovely drink for OpenRicers who desire a creamy drink.

The following are their standard muffins with various designs. Each muffin costs SGD3.50, which is the market price of most muffins in the desserts industry.

I thought all was equally tasty, but if I were to make a choice, I would choose the flower. This is because of their additional white chocolate... though the rest tasted quite similar too! I love the moist base, and I could eat all 4 of them in one go. It's highly addictive, these desserts, mind you!

If you're heading to The Sweet Movement, don't forget the following:
1. Bring your camera, they have cute looking desserts and the lighting is quite good to take pictures.
2. Bring a book for a lazy afternoon off the urban district.
3. Bring lots of water and get yourself hydrated from the desserts and coffee!
4. Bring an umbrella in case it rains. This is because even though the cafe is sheltered, you may be drenched if the wind blows!

Recommended Dish(es):  nutty salt caramel

Spending per head: Approximately $10(Tea)

I don't have to be in the area near Changi to drop by Guru's Banana Leaf anymore. The verdict is this: the food is so good that I am willing to travel from the west to the east for their delectable cuisine. On my virgin trip to this store, it was conveniently by chance because I was there after a trip to Pulau Ubin, and the food was extremely satisfactory after a long, exhausting day of hiking and cycling. I also do appreciate their friendly service in recommending the different choices that they offer, as well as patiently waiting while my dining partner and I contemplated over what food items to select.

The green banner usually symbolises that all food is Halal, so I'm glad that I can bond with my Muslim friends and indian nationals in this place.

The recently renovated store now includes a open-kitchen concept where you can appreciate the chef's prata-making process. There are indoor and outdoor seating, and you can smoke in a restricted area. I was a little shy to go up front to look at him make the food, so I pretended walking up and down to see how he prepared the food. Here's what we ordered:

Roti John - SGD5.00
The Roti John looked rather flat at first. The omellete sandwich included minced meat from both chicken and mutton. It also has slices of onion, lots of eggs, and a delectable spread of tomato-chilli sauce on a baguette-type loaf.

I must say that they did not go easy on the tomato-chilli sauce and the eggs, giving it a mouth full of flavourful sweetness and extreme spice. The meat was rather fresh and it didn't taste as fatty or oily as I thought it would be.

Garlic Naan - SGD1.50
I love Naans as it always taste less oiler than Roti Prata. The garlic naan sold in Guru's banana leaf was strong in its fragrance, and I love how parts of the Naan was crispy, while the other parts were fluffy. I really loved it!

Cheese Naan - SGD2.50
The cheese was evenly spread throughout the naan, though it did require some washing down of the throat. However, i wish that the cheese was more sticky in texture like the Mozzarella cheese found in pizzas. If you were to ask for my preference, I would recommend the Garlic Naan over the cheese naan because the cheese naan lacks crispiness.

Palak Paneer - SGD6.50
The thick curry sauce overwhelmed the base of the pureed spinach, and honestly, I would prefer so!

It also comes with chunks of cottage cheese that was delicious to taste. It was mild against the strong flavourful taste of the spinach-curry.

Here's one column of the menu to show you the wide variety of the food that they have. I felt that the food was delicious and it was sold at very reasonable prices.
If you're thinking of heading down today, here's some recommended tips for my fellow OpenRicers!

1. Don't sit in the interior of the shop as it may be rather warm.Try to avoid the outermost outdoor seating area as well at night, because there was a strong burning rubber smell which probably came from the main road.
2. Do drink lots of water if you are ordering the garlic naan to avoid embarrassing bad mouth odours.
3. Be prepared to google some items that you have not heard before. I am not well-versed in Indian cuisine, hence my dining partner and I were googling away the names of the items because of the lack of pictures.
4. The parking space is very limited. Try to take the public transport or park elsewhere because there was a traffic jam on the main road due to the queue of cars waiting to get into the carpark.

Dessert at Hot Tomato? Smile Dec 31, 2013

Categories : Steaks and Grills

Hot Tomato has been around in Singapore since 2007, opened by an experienced chef who loves to travel and was inspired by the world's food. I totally love this delicious lava cake, which is not too awfully sweet, but just right. my friends and i were there to celebrate a beloved girl's birthday!
so we just went there to order a cake and relax~

The ice-cream was actually by King's or Wall's, and i love the art of drizzling the chocolate syrup across the plate and the lava cake.Inside the cake, the chocolate actually melts and it is warm on the inside, with cold ice-cream at the top. it is a perfect combination and is extremely delicious. the best thing is, it costs even lesser than other famous chocolate brands such as awfully chocolate! The lava cake was only $4.50. THE SERVICE was superb! the waiters and waitresses were all friendly and nice smile

The call of nature Smile Aug 11, 2013

Categories : Fusion | Café | Vegetarian

What's Real Food about? We know that they practise healthy living because of their strict vegan menu, but there is something more about what this restaurant chain offers. It is that 'zen' feeling which I get when I step into the restaurant. The dim yellow lightings and wooden furniture makes me feel at home, and the kitchen concept is extremely open. This is not any vegetarian diet that the hawker center offers, because there is absolutely NO MOCK MEAT. This is the true diet of a health-conscious individual, and I just love soaking in the atmosphere where everything seems a little pace slower, because they are serious in offering a healthy meal from.. scratch. When I mean from scratch, it means that they do all the mixes THEMSELVES, no pre-made (yes, they aren't off the shelves of a supermarket). shocked

There is also a pop-up store where you can browse for health magazines and healthy takeaways such as sauces and vegetables. In addition, there are health brochures for you to take home, free. The furniture in the store is light and easy to carry, thus providing an extremely homely ambience for all. It is not a fanciful restaurant, but really emulates the setting of a cozy home.

Oat Milk with Almond (Top Right)
$ 4.00

So I ordered a cup of Oat Milk with Almond. It is apparently made from unpeeled and unbleached almonds to ensure better aroma and nutrition. Honestly, I'm not a fan of almonds and the oat milk tasted funny. I could hardly taste the oats, sad but the strong stench of almonds (haha yes, the smell of almonds is a stench to me) really lingered in an aftertaste. I felt super perked up by it though, it definitely did not taste like any of those in a carton or milk packet.

GARLIC / ONIONS
Genovese Pesto Pasta
$ 9.80

The Pesto Pasta is an organic pasta, tossed with homemade organic pesto, fresh grilled courgettes, olives and crumbled boiled potatoes. It is topped with delicious feta cheese and fresh basil leaves. chopstick

I have never tasted vegetables that are so fresh and so good. lol There is a crunch in every bite, due to the courgette. Even the boiled potatoes were full of flavour, who says healthy food can't be that good? I really had a misconception that any food that is linked to healthy would be bad, but Real Food really made the effort in ensuring their food is not only presentable, healthy, but it also taste great!

Original Strawberries and Banana Pancakes $ 9.80
**
This delicious, organic gluten and wheat free fluffy pancakes is topped with strawberries, bananas and organic agave. It took 25 minutes for them to make this, and they did give us a heads-up before preparing that their pancakes would take longer because they would do the mix from scratch. True enough, their pancakes really took 25 minutes and IT IS ABSOLUTELY HEAVENLY. All the pancakes in the world suddenly pale in comparison to their made-from-scratch pancakes, and even though its' not something that they boast of, the kitchen staff secretly works behind the scene and all of the employees there have one philosophy and passion: to make healthy food that taste good too.

Dripped with honey over the pancake, the batter was not only fragrant but also moist and juicy. The organic banana and strawberry is a blend between sweetness and sourness, and if there is any dish that would define a state of bliss, the Original Strawberries and Banana Pancakes would be it. Who else can trademark or patent such a claim that their pancakes are original? Only Real Food.

Posting this photo just for fun to show how delicious it is. I would wipe their plates clean (no need to hire dishwasher anymore, Real Food!) tongue

I would recommend you to try the original strawberries and banana pancakes if you are a newbie in starting a healthy diet. Go slow and steady, but don't stop!
