My friends and I happened to walk past Canton-i and decided to give it a try. The place looked very posh and the service crew were rather friendly. We ordered roast pork, roast duck and chicken platter to share. I particularly liked the roast pork because the skin was not over roasted and they weren't too fat as well.

I had sour and spicy soup while my friend had a pot of soup of the day (it happened to be radish and pork ribs soup that night). They were generous with the ingredients. You can find shredded tofu, mushrooms, radish and minced meat in them. It tasted extremely good especially when it was a rainy night we visited the restaurant. smile

Another dish to recommend was the salt and pepper fried tofu. It was an appetizer, tasted really delicious. The tofu was crispy on the outside and really soft and sweet on the inside.

Generally the food was not too bad but the price was on the high side. The soup cost about $8 per pax. We paid about $42 per pax for the meal. sad

love the ramen Smile Dec 27, 2010

I simply love the ramen here because its salty but not over done. I had Tao Kuro with egg. Love the egg to bits as it was really runny and soft. The taste of the soup was much stronger than Ippudo Shiro, which my friend ordered. If you prefer a lighter soup base, you can opt for Shiro instead.

We also tried the steamed bun with braised pork, aka Kong Ba Bao. The fatty meat melts in your mouth and you will not feel over-whelmed by the taste of pork. Buta Kakuni Onsen Tamago (which is the tender pork cubes in Japanese soy sauce) was fantastic too. It is served with an egg and once again, they did it just right, not too oily at all.

The service is fantastic and you get to see how the chefs prepare the food just right in front of you.

Another ideal place for supper Smile Dec 27, 2010

Categories : Singaporean Chinese

This is yet another good choice for supper if you have sudden craving for peppery soup late at night. Or perhaps you feel like having some hot soup after a night of partying, Ya Hua will certainly be a good choice.

I love their bak kut teh because it is very peppery. And the fact they will always refill your soup whenever you request for it. The youtiao goes very well with the soup but they are usually sold out by 11plus. So if you are heading there for supper, you may be disappointed.

Another dish that i will definitely order will be the Zhu Jiao. They will always try to serve a mixture of lean and fatter meat. Thumbs up for that!

dim sum for supper?  Smile Dec 27, 2010

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Coffeeshop | Dim Sum | Halal | Zi Char

When I first heard about Tang Tea House, I had to admit I was quite skeptical about the quality of their food. Well, partly because they serve halal dim sum. As you would know, most dim sum items have pork in them, thus, I cannot imagine siew mai with chicken. However, I was totally wrong about them.

I was very impressed with their dim sum such as siew mai, har gau, fried prawn fritters etc. The har gau even had "soup" in it, so be careful when you are eating that. I tried their xiao long baos as well. As usual, they are filled with chicken and lots of soup, but the taste of the soup was a little too sweet for my liking. I still prefer crystal jade's clear-soup xiao long baos.

There is one item that I will like to recommend. That is Crispy Fried Bee Hoon. Something really different from the usual fried bee hoon that we had in chinese restaurant. Worth trying if you are there. smile

One more plus point for them is that they open till late, so this is an ideal place for supper if you have cravings for dim sum.

up to expectations Smile Nov 08, 2010

I have heard good reviews of Putien for awhile but never had a chance to try out. Finally had a chance to try some of their signature dishes over the weekend. There was a long queue but the turnover was quite fast. We only had to wait for about 15 minutes.

There were some recommended signature dishes which we tried. One of which was the bitter gourd (appetizer). The bitter gourd was served with ice and honey dip. I'm not a fan of bitter gourd but the taste was tangy and fresh. Not a bit bitter at all with the honey. Its a very interesting appetizer.

We also had herbal prawn soup, sweet & sour pork with lychee and fried yam with duck. The herbal prawn soup was fantastic. The prawns were fresh and the herbal taste was not overwhelming. It costs $4.90 for one portion (as seen in the photo) and the portion is just right for one pax.

The sweet & sour pork is nothing to rave about. Pretty normal. However, we tried the fried yam with duck. The outer layer is very crispy and the duck meat is wrapped with yam. The taste of the duck and yam compliments each other and you won't get too sick of the yam since you get a slight taste of the meat too.

Oh and we tried their signature lor mee as well. The lor mee is not our usual traditional lor mee you tried at hawker centres. The soup is clear with plenty of ingredients such as clams, prawns, chicken, vegetables etc. They are pretty generous with their ingredients. The smallest portion (priced at $7.90) is sufficient for 3-4 pax.

Generally, the taste of the food was of good standards. The service was acceptable for a chinese restaurant. It is a good choice for family eat-outs. smile
