Fruit Juice Mee Siam Smile Apr 20, 2013

It is my first time coming to this stall in Hong Lim Food Centre & Market. For the short time I have been sitting down, I have noticed that there is always people queuing up at the stall. Not much items on the menu, just 3 bestsellers : 1. Laksa, 2. Fruit Juice Mee Siam, 3. Mee Rebus, priced at $3, $4 and $6. All 3 are one dish meal commonly found in Singapore. What is so special about them? Today I am going to find out for its Mee Siam.

Today is a food tasting session by OpenRice.

Goodies from OpenRice. Thank god for the paper fan. It has been a super hot day today.

Cold freshly squeezed sugar cane juice for all. Wow it cools me down at once.

The star of today meal : Fruit Juice Crayfish Mee Siam (usual : $6).
Unlike the usual version of mee siam, the version here has a more light and tangy taste. So tangy that you do not have to squeeze the lime served with the dish. Therefore I suspect that lime juice has used in the making of the gravy and thus the name "Fruit Juice Mee Siam". The crayfish and the prawns accompanying the dish, taste fresh and juicy, as well as, the tender chicken too.

Lastly thank you OpenRice for the invite. It has been a very enjoyable and informative meal for me.

6th stop on the food trail.

Homey decorations.

Boo Boo ($6.80/slice or $62/whole)
nydc friends’ chocolate cake with piped swirls of light whipped cream. So good, diners come back or this time and again.

Chocolaty.

Goldmine Cheesecake ($7.20/slice or $68/whole)
It’s Ally’s New York Cheesecake with chocolate chunks, slathered with irresistible chocolate fudge topping. And did we mention a solid Oreo cookie base?

Rich and creamy.

3-some (mudpie) ($11.80/slice)
It’s ménage à trois of the guilt-free kind! Get wild and gooey while sandwiched between 3 layers of chocolate chip cookie dough, strawberry and strawberry cheesecake ice creams and graham crackers.
The multi texture in mouth. Wow.

Jedi Mudster (mudpie) ($11.80/slice)
The force is tempting us with this one. Double Chocolate Chip and Macadamia Nut ice cream on an Oreo base with homemade cookie chunks. Complete with chocolate fudge and whipped cream.
Delicious.

Cheap sushi Smile Apr 15, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

First time coming here to eat. Very cheap for rotating sushi at $1.50 per plate.

Tea bags and hot water are available at the counter table for free flow DIY hot tea. Tea at this place is free.

Miso soup
Served in a paper bowl with pieces of salmon and tofu. Tastes just nice, not too salty.

The various sushi which we have tried are fresh and juicy.

The maki here have interesting variety.

The side dishes are also very tasty.

I could see the sushi chef is kept busy to fill up the rotating belt, stacking as much as he could. The staff counting my plates has super eyesight. With a look, she knows how many plates on the tables.

Chicken Pie Smile Feb 14, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Bakery | Restaurant | Desserts and Cakes | Kids-Friendly

Chicken Shepherd’s Pie ($5.80) : A variation of Don’s signature chicken pie, Don steams and mashes all the potatoes in house to create the soft, yet firm texture you see on the chicken pie. Cooking and mashing the potatoes in house keeps the pie fresh.Chunks of chicken, mushroom slices, carrot, corns, peas under the mashed potato. Tastes very peppery. Tasty mash potato on top to balance out the pepperness.

Kid’s Pie ( $5.80 ) : Removed the peppercorns from his trademark chicken pie to make his trademark pie suitable for children of all ages! Feels that the pastry is too thick and not crispy enough. The pastry has a rather strong shortening taste.

Simple buns Smile Feb 09, 2013

Categories : Bakery

Soft cake ($2.20) : Very soft, even the little one likes it. Not too sweet for the kaya filling.
Bailey custard ($1.40) : Inside filled with big amount of tasty custard.
Nacho cheese ($1.50) : One of my favorite, with the melted cheese flowing on the mashed potato.
Hawaiian pizza ($1.60) : One of the best I like this bun is that the hotdog are inside the bun, unlike the usual when the hotdog slices are on top of the bun.
