Overpriced simple dish Cry Mar 22, 2016

Categories : Malaysian | Singaporean Chinese | Bak Kut Teh

Recently a Bak Kut Teh restaurant had taken over the space formerly occupied by a Japanese restaurant. There was both indoor and outdoor dine in area and all were in air con area.

Order was self service style, taken with the ipad at the table. The restaurant served its signature Black Herbal Soup (Malaysia Style) and White Peppery Soup (Singapore Style) for its Bak Kut Teh. It also served the dry version style.

Menu was a simple booklet.

There was dark soya sauce, sliced chilli padi and soya sauce to help yourself to.

I tried the Basic Black Herbal Soup ($5.90++) for 1 person which required minimum 1 topping as it did not come with any meat. Where got people have Bak Kut Teh without any meat. So topup

Pig's Stomach ($2.90++) and

Pork Tenderloin ($2.90++). The soup was bland with just hints of herbal taste. The pig's stomach was too thinly silced. The pork tenderloin was over tenderized. There was no natural meat texture or taste.

As the soup did not come with rice, so topup Soup Udon in white soup ($5.90++). The udon was more like the chinese style handmade noodle than udon. The white soup was bland with hints of peppery.

Fried Tofu ($3.90/ half portion)
Served simply with shoyu based sauce, it actually tasted not bad.

Overall the food was average and was way overpriced.

Bad experience Cry Jan 07, 2016

The restaurant was newly opened in Sun Plaza and we decided to try it. We arrived at the restaurant just before the dinner crowd. The place was not crowded. But we patiently stood at the Wait To be Served queue, although there was empty tables with unclear cutlery around. In the end no people came to assist us and we walked to one of the unclear table. Requested for the menu from one of the staff, who just pulled out a drawer from the table and left. Turned out that the menu was on the ipad which none of us knew.
Just as I was about to submit my order, a staff arrived with an order of pig's liver soup ($7.20++) and insisted that I had ordered it. I was furious with this attitude from the staff. After much fireworks, the bowl was removed.

Soon the food started to be served. But cutlery was not served so we asked the staff for it, who just declared it was at the table. Turned out the cutlery was in a hidden compartment at the side of the table. Thank to the helpful customers from the neighbouring table. Turned out that they also faced similar experience when they first dining in here too.

Remember to help yourself to the various sauces such as sliced chilli, minced garlic, chilli sauce, dark soya sauce, light soya sauce, and sesame sauce at the counter. None of staff care to advise us on it.
The food arrived in batches with different printout. Take note of having sets. Ordered a Set B which turned out one of the dishes in set had not arrived even after a long wait. Told the staff who gave a disbelieve look.

Set Menu B ($15++)
Premium Loin Ribs($11.80 ala carte) + You Tiao($2 ala carte) + Beancurd($2.30 ala carte) + Rice ($0.80 ala carte)
The meat on the rib was quite tender. Soup was average. Surprisingly the first dish to arrive, turned out to be the dessert - sweet cold beancurd. Last to arrive was the you tiao.

Preserved Vegetable ($3.90++)
Felt that it was overpriced. The dish was not stewed soft enough. Could not taste the sweetness from the vegetable.

Braised Pig's Intestines ($8.50++)
It was the worst dish in the whole meal. The intestines was bitter and not soften enough. A sign of not enough cleaning of the intestines being done. Awful dish to have.

Mee Xian ($2++)
The noodles was lumpy and powdery. Quite awful to taste.

Braised Pig's Trotter ($10++)
It was tender but still not to the melt in the mouth texture yet.

Pig's Stomach Soup ($7.20++)
It was average.
Sour Plum ($2++)
It was served hot without ice. Tasted ok.
With another bowl of rice ($0.80++), total bill was $58.10 which I felt was overpriced. Overall the food was awful. The service was the worst kind. Furthermore there was GST and service charge when one was expected to walk to the cashier to make payment oneself. The queue at the cashier was quite long too. Didn't think of visiting this place in the near future.

Dinner Cry Sep 25, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

As it is late and I am planning for a quick dinner, I decide to stop here for a meal as the place is not crowded.

Miso Tonkotsu Ramen ($7.80)
Miso Pork Base Soup + Home Made Pork Char Siew
It looks great but the taste is disappointing. As it has prickled ginger in it, the soup tastes mostly of the ginger and also too salty too. Other than that, the dish is average.

Mini Soboro Don ($3.50)
It is plain rice, topped with minced meat sauce. Kinda of similar to the taiwanese Lu Rou Fan 滷肉飯. The minced meat braised in a slighlty sweet dark sauce. Simple but nice.

Overall the rice dishes seems to fare better. I could hear that the kitchen soon telling customers that they have ran out of rice.

Food Tasting Cry Jul 01, 2015

Categories : Café | Burgers and Sandwiches

Tonite I was invite to a food tasting session at this cafe. It is located at somerset area, which is just above the mrt station. The cafe is small but has a nice view of the busy orchard stretch outside.

The menu is simple but colorful looking.

Frozen Hot Chocolate
($8.90)
The ice chocolate is smooth and rich. It tastes great.

Pina Colada Ice Blended Shake ($7.90)
It is a refreshing drink but a bit too sweet for me.

Big Breakfast
The dish looks great. But I have a big shock when I taste it. The scrambled egg is slightly cooked and is over salted. The rest is also quite salty, except for the sliced fruit and yogurt.

Portobello Burger
The burger is not bad with the juicy big mushroom as the patty. But it feels a bit too plain.

Mixed Grill Platter
The chicken yakitori stick tastes great with the meat tender and flavourful. But the beef stick is rather tough and difficult to chew. Guess wrong cut of meat is used here. Similar to other dishes, the fries is a bit over salted.

Tagliatelle Seafood Marinara
I think this dish has the best presentation out of all the dishes tonite. Although the dish looks a bit dry, it tastes not bad with the big and juicy seafood around it.

Chocolate Waffle
The dessert looks not bad. But the waffle is not crispy to my liking. Inside it is not fluffy at all.

Overall the food has more misses than hits. But the food are priced reasonable and the cafe is located at a nice and quiet centralized place. A great choice to relax and chill after a day of shopping. Another thing which I notice is that although the cafe is not full, the staff goes around asking if we need the glasses. Seems that the cafe is suffering from a shortage of glasses. Cannot think what happen if the cafe is full.

Slow service. Cry Oct 02, 2014

Menu

Menu

The place is located just above the departure hall. Prices on menu looks reasonable and we decide to have a quick meal before flight.

Curry Koay Teow with Curry Chicken ($7.00)
The curry powder taste is a bit strong here. But the Koay Teow is quite smooth

Sparkling Calamansi ($5.00)
Just normal lime juice.

Iced Mojito ($5.00)
Tastes like 7-up to me, with some mints for decoration.

Roti Bakar Susu ($3.00)
Waited quite awhile for this. It is actually toasted thick bread with lots of melted butter and condensed milk on top. Sinful but yummy.

Ipoh Koay Teow Soup with Steamed Chicken ($7.90)
We have finished the above dishes when finally this arrived. The Koay Teow Soup is light and silky. Little JJ has quite an amount of it. Not sure if he is too hungry, especially after waiting so long for food.

The staffs have forgetten the desserts (Lemon Grass Jelly with Ice Blended Calamansi, and Sea Coconut, Black Jelly with Lychee) despite reminding them a number of times. In fact, I have asked them to serve everything together including the dessert when placing the order. In the end, I decide to cancel the order of desserts when billing at the cashier. The dessert aunty who standing to the cashier, still has to cheek to say that she is making the dessert now when questioned by a senior staff. Hi aunty, I have been sitting right in front of you during the whole meal, but none of the orders is for me.

Total the meal costs $31.43. Overall it has been a horrible meal for me. Do not think will be visiting this place in the near future.
