Peppery Soup Cry Nov 07, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Coffeeshop | Chinese Soup | Rice

Dad has ordered Ba Kut Teh($5) with plain rice($0.50). The pork ribs are quite tender, but the soup is too peppery for me.

Dad also ordered Braised Pig's Trotter($5) which is mostly fatty skin on bones. Not much meat. We are quite disappointed.

Overall we are quite disappointed with the food. Especially when we see that the next table has bigger serving than us for the same dishes. So non regulars are treated differently, so double standard.

Set meal Cry Oct 22, 2013

Categories : Chinese | Coffeeshop | Zi Char

What can one find in Yishun Industrial Area on a wet Sunday night? That is what I am wondering. It turns out there is a coffeeshop under a industrial block. At the coffeeshop, there is a brightly lighted Zi Char stall. The Zi Char stall is currently having a promotion for its set meal called 3+1 with priced at $29.80, $39.80 and $43.80. Father orders the $43.80 set which consists of a Red Grouper Steamboat, Specialty Dry Crab, Shark's Fin, and Dried Shrimp French Bean.

Father asks the staff to serve sliced chillis and is served chopped chilli padi twice despite repeating our requests. (Shake head) Wet tissues and peanuts are also served. As those are chargeable, we request that to be taken off.
French Bean with garlic

French Bean with garlic

The Dried Shrimp French Bean is quite crunchy and garlicky in taste.

Red Grouper

The sliced red grouper looks not bad. The yam pieces in the steamboat taste quite soft, but I somehow feel the soup base is not flavourful enough.
Claypot BeanCurd

Mom has the Shark's Fin Soup replaced with Claypot Beancurd. The sauce covering the beancurd is too gluey and lacking of flavours.
Salted Egg Yolk Crab

Salted Egg Yolk Crab

As for the Specialty Dry Crab, we decide to replace the spicy flavour with Salted Egg Yolk with a $2 topup. We are surprised by such a small serving. The crab is cooked till very dry. There is no sauce at all. The crabmeat tastes quite dry like chicken meat.sad I never thought crabmeat can taste like that.

At the end of the meal, we are served a plate of cut watermelon with toothpicks on. Total damages with 4 plates of plain rice, the meal costs $48.20. Overall it is a very disappointing meal. No wonder need promotion to attract customers.

Categories : Taiwanese | Chinese | Restaurant

As it is already past 9.30pm, most of the eateries have already closed and there is not much choices left. After walking around, we end up here.

The place is brightly decorated in traditional Chinese style with red brick wall, paper lanterns and black and white photos. Seating is simple with just wooden tables and stools. It is a no frills self service. One has placed order, made payment in cash and collected food from the counter.

Fried Rice Noodles
Set 4 is consists of Fried Rice Noodles and Meat Ball Soup and costs $5.90. The noodles is not fried at all. It is more like cooked rice noodles topped with minced meat sauce. sad Worse the noodles does not have any flavour.  The noodles does not have any characteristics of the traditional Taiwan Hsichu Bee Hoon. Hsichu Bee Hoon has a extremely fine texture as Hsichu is considered a rather windy county.

Meat Ball Soup
The meat ball seems to have too much flour inside as there is no bite of meat.

Taiwan Soup Noodles
Set 5 is consists of a bowl of Taiwan Soup Noodles and a drink ( choice of winter melon tea or red tea) and costs $5.50. The impression of the noodle soup that hit us is that it reminds us of the prawn noodle soup we usually found in hawker centres. It smells like one and tastes like one too. And of course not what we are expecting. Another disappointed dish.

Winter melon tea ($2.20)
The winter melon tea does not taste too sweet but the winter melon taste is a bit faint.

Overall it has been quite a disappointing meal. There is none of the Taiwanese taste to be found here. Don't think I will be back in the near future.

Dessert Time Cry Sep 06, 2013
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Chinese Desserts | Desserts and Cakes

We are showed to a very small table, with worn out menu.

Double Boiled Milk with Baked Walnut and Almond ($5.50)
I am surprised that there is only cold version for this dessert. Kind of remind me of breakfast.

Durian Pancake ($4.80)
A rather small serving, with mostly whipped cream in the filling. I could barely taste the durian flesh. Feel very je la after eating a mouthful. Feel like throwing out.

Toddy Palm in Vanilla Sauce with Thai Black Glutinous Rice ($5.30)
The ice cold vanilla sauce tastes a bit out of place with the warm rice. There is small cubes of taro in the glutinous rice.

Baked Mashed Taro Sago Pudding (Hot) ($4.80)
The taro flavour is quite faint. Be prepare to wait for this dish. Served piping hot. Not too sweet. But can be quite jelat after a few bites.

Overall the desserts leave a bad taste and I do not feel quite alright after eating. Stomach feel quite bloated.

Italian Granita Cry Aug 19, 2013
Categories : Italian | Ice Cream and Gelato

At this gelato outlet, it also sells Italian Granita which is a refreshing beverage made of all natural and fresh ingradient.

I order a cup of each flavour each to try. Oh what a bad choice. It looks like there is few orders for this item as the staff has a hard time making the drinks. We wait quite a while for our drinks. It is very cold and extremely sweet. The crushed ice is too big. If it is finer will be better. The flavour of lemon and green tea is quite faint. I feel that it is also quite small cup and not worth its price.
