Value for money deals OK Oct 07, 2014

King louis is a theme restaurant which offers many value for money options. For example, there's 1 for 1 main course deals during weekdays, on top of the daily set meal deals.

During my last visit, I had the following under the Halloween Feast:

1) Highlander Pumpkin Soup
It was very rich with a bit of grainy pumpkin texture to it, complemented with a well toasted garlic bread. Not over the top in terms of taste, but if you like a huge bowl of soup before your mains, you may probably like this.

2) English-Style Bacon Caesar Salad
The bacon Caesar salad is one of my favourite, just nice to whet my appetite. Tangy sauce, fresh crunchy vegetables n aromatic bacon. yum yum!

3) King louis platter
It was a mixture of onion rings, wedges and chicken sausages. Basically, a fast food platter you will see at any restaurants, but i would prefer the platter to come with different kinds of sausages and each sausage to match the size n juiciness of bratwurst.

4) Queen Isabelle Platter

The dish comprised of a heap full of beef, lamb, chicken n pork ribs n greens. Good for carnivores.

The roasted beef with black pepper sauce was definitely not a high quality cut, but they have done their best to tenderise the meat. It was a slim cut, not the typical thick juicy slab.

The premium BBQ baby back ribs was very tender and soft. 1 of my favourite among the four meats. I would have liked it even more if the chef goes slightly easy on the marinate.

The roasted English- Style queen pullet was an OK dish. Quite difficult to go very wrong with chicken dish, I feel. It's generally well seasoned and decent.

The lamb Steak with rosemary herbs did not quite taste like mutton, instead it tasted like rubber with herbs.

5) Coconut ice cream with (lots of) almond flakes, I love it!! To begin with, i am not a coconut ice cream fan, but this desert treat changed my opinion.

As the above is part of Halloween set meal, I thought the dishes could have a closer connection to Halloween. Say if pumpkin soup with coconut ice cream? Or food served in pumpkin jack-o lantern?

Overall, it's value for $ and the standard of food is ok, good place to catch up with friends who are abit tight on budget.

The atmosphere at Brotzeit reminds me of the rambling yet cosy biergartens found in Munich. The staff were friendly and accomodating, even when the restaurant is near full capacity.

I had pork knuckle which is crispy on the outside and tender inside, flanked with generous helpings of sauerkraut, which is very appertising. The beers are all fresh from the tap and tasty, but my personal favourite is a beer mixed from lager and vodka, which adds a refreshing twist to the typical lager. On such a breezy evening, accompanied by great company, all in all, it is a very good way to spend a Friday evening. TGIF!!

Value for money choice Smile Nov 22, 2010

Typical chinese restaurant which boasts clientele from tourists to young and old heartlanders. Food was pretty average, good food portion and affordable pricing which range from $218 for 8-10 pax set meal and $15.80 to $29.80 per pax for ala-carte value lunch.

Many of the waitresses are old-timers and they are really friendly and truthful with their food recommendations. Durian Mochi ($2 per piece), if still available, will always top their recommendation list as dessert. It is because this crowd pleaser is a small chewy dessert, wrapped in a thin glutinous skin filled with creamy, fragrant durian puree, blended with D24 durian pulp. The mochi simply oozes durian puree with 1 bite and the glutinous layer then automatically melt in your mouth. it's simply heavenly!

Good dining experience Smile Nov 22, 2010

Tried this restuarant for their value set dinner. Seatings were spacious and the waiters/waitresses were attentive to our requests. Ordered the braised duck for the main course and it reminded me of the braised duck rice I had in kopitiam with rice and braised egg, less tau pok and cucumber. It tasted quite good. Perhaps it's an attempt to create french-Chinese fusion dish by Chef Daniel but i found the resemblance too uncanny. Found their soup of the day minestone soup appetising and dessert cake simply lovely for my liking. Their liveband starts at 830 and it heightens the pleasant roof-top dining experience. On the whole, it was value for money considering the ambience and the food. I would definitely want to go back with my friends again.

Heard from a friend that Ginza Bairin is an established outlet (started in 1927) based in Tokyo Ginza, so I was expecting that their specialty, Tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) to be somewhat tastier or at least on par than the ones from Tonkichi (Isetan Shaw) and Tampopo (Liang Court).

However, my taste buds went largely unsatisfied.

The deep fried Tonkatsu failed to retain the moisture and juiciness of the meat and it lacks the special sauce, that comes with sesame, to further enhance the flavor and aroma of Tonkatsu. Usually, lots of crispy cabbages are given to reduce its oilyness, but here only a tablespoon's worth of shredded cabbage are given.

Well given the price, I would rather stick to my favourite Tonkatsu choices in Tampopo and Tonkichi.
