Sinful desserts @ EWF Smile Oct 20, 2012

Awesome

Awesome

Everyone knows EWF's famous Nutella Tart - no doubt it's 'da bomb', but I've come to realise that the other desserts on their menu are pretty underrated.

One such example is the Banana Cream Pie. The pie filling is perfect; the cream adds a mellow touch to the very fruity taste of banana. However, to me, the crust is what really makes a pie, and EWF does it so incredibly well. Moist, yet not tooo crumbly. Great texture!

I'll make it a point to sample other desserts on their menu the next time I pop by... all of them look so promising! lol

Excellent!

Excellent!

Excellent!

Swee Choon is by far the best dim sum restaurant in town. Great food aside, it's really cheap too! And the fact that it opens till late at night is an extra plus point for me.

Pork dumplings are firm on the outside and super juicy on the inside - be careful not to bite too hard into each! Xiao long bao is definitely unrivalled; it's so full of flavour. As for the custard & salted egg bun, it's extremely tasty and not too sweet.

The only 2 issues I have with the place are 1) the location and 2) the longggggggggg queue. But it's always worth the journey and the wait.

The best bak chor mee in SG Smile Sep 23, 2012

I honestly think the bak chor mee at Meng Kitchen @ Upper Thomson is the best in Singapore. There's nothing average about it! The best way to enjoy this dish is to order it with extra chilli and extra vinegar. But of course, if you're not a fan of chilli, the version without the spice is also pretty good. If you've a big appetite, you might want to consider adding noodles because the portion for a normal bowl of bak chor mee is small.

Disappointing desserts OK Aug 05, 2013

Categories : French | European | Café | Desserts and Cakes

My friends and I made reservations for lunch at 1pm but to our dismay, they weren't offering the full menu until after 2:30pm so we were stuck with limited choices. BOO!

I ordered the brunch set which was about $58++ for one main and one dessert or appetiser.

I chose the appetiser of French onion soup. This was the best thing I had during lunch here. Super strong broth that hits you instantly and the amount of cheese was amazing!!!

We ordered a side of truffle fries to share. Every table seemed to have this so we thought why not? Verdict: good but the truffle wasn't evenly distributed. Some didn't have truffle on them at all.

The duck confit was my main course. The chocolate sauce that accompanied the mash potatoes was just plain weird for me (although my friends thought it was okay). It has this weird aftertaste. As for the duck itself, one word: overcooked. The skin was nice and cripsy but the meat was just too tough. Sigh.

Also, not pictured, we ordered 4 desserts to share - cheesecake platter, banana nutella crepe, bread and butter pudding cake and raspberry chocolate cake. All of them were really bad and disappointing, maybe except for the banana nutella crepe but even that barely passed. sad

Milk powder pork ribs FTW! OK Aug 04, 2013

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Zi Char

Came here for a little celebration with a bunch of friends. This place sure is 'ulu'. I almost got lost, even though I took a cab here! Apparently the block doesn't show up on GPS so.. that was a bit tricky.

Anyway, we ordered plenty of dishes to share:

Vegetables & egg (can't remember the official name) - this was pretty average. Forgettable.

Herbal chicken - not bad! One of the better versions I've had. Chicken is very tender and the broth is wholesome.

Milk powder pork ribs - my favourite dish of the evening. Milk powder's an interesting topping, and picking off the little milk powder bits is the second best part next to eating the pork ribs lol

Prawn paste chicken - not bad, but I wish they'd use more prawn paste. The flavour wasn't strong enough.

Salted egg yolk prawns - can't say much about this dish cos I skipped it.. too messy!

Drunken cockles - pretty good as well but, I think the flavour wasn't soaked in enough. Heard the Commonwealth branch does a better job with this creation.
