Gourmet Burgers Smile Apr 22, 2013

Visiting Bergs on a Saturday evening at around 7, the whole place was a ghost-town. Super quiet and the shops all looks 3/4 empty. Wanted to try Bergs after hearing about their burgers that were supposedly fresh and healthy. I opted for the Mumbo Jumbo which is cajun chicken in a lemon mayo sauce, aioli, lettuce, onion and tomatoes in a bun. I added on fries and a lemonade (at $4) for the bill to come up to $17.50 in total!

Mumbo Jumbo!

Mumbo Jumbo!

The cajun chicken was really succulent and had just the right amount of flavour, the sauce was tangy and refreshing, and the bun wasn't too oily. I guess for most people the chicken wouldn't be salty enough and it would be just right with a sprinkle of salt. With or without, I'm still fine since I don't take my food too salty anyways. The burger is also really big -you can opt for the large one or the small one. The large one is ...really pretty large, so don't opt for the fries if you're not too hungry.

The fries were really good, thick cut -you can bite into the crisp golden potato. The dip is supposedly barbecue (I would think) but it had a faint trace of danggui. I have no idea why but it tasted like barbecue sauce with someone accidentally pouring chinese medicine into it. Not my kind of dip. Other than that, the fries were perfect.

The lemonade was very sour, with lemon sacs in it, but the taste grows on you as you eat it. The iced tea was definitely more palatable -homemade, sweet but with a slight bitter aftertaste of the tea. Nothing to shout about.

Ambience and service wise, this place is great! It's quiet especially during the weekends for a quiet dinner with friends/family, the service is good too -staff are friendly. The decor is simple and no-frills, wooden benches and tables... A nice chillout place with okay prices for great, healthy food!

fun experience! Smile Apr 14, 2013

The Chupitos Bar is the go-to place for a variety of shots that are not only fun, but also outstandingly creative. They offer pair shots which go for $12, group shots/drinks (i.e. Russian Roulette, Gas Chamber) that go for around $60-80, indivudal shots (either $12-$15) as well as drop shots (i.e. Jagerbombs) that go for around $15-$18.

I say that this is a go-to place not just because of their tongue-in-cheek creations, such as the dare shots which involve activities that are strictly for the adventurous and sporting, but also because of the lively atmosphere. The staff are always pleasant and friendly, and the whole atmosphere of the open-air bar concept (they have an indoor and outdoor seating) where friends can come and hang out is just eclectic.

We ordered four rounds of the pair shots, Illusion, Crouching Tiger, Paddle Pop as well as Paradise. Each shot comes with an interesting colour based on the liquer used. Illusion and Paradise were green, Crouching Tiger was blue, and Paddle Pop is a milky pink/blue. Each shot had a nice balance of fruitiness from the fruit juice and liquer (usually lychee or midori which is a musk-melon liquer), as well as the spirit used. The shots were tasty and interesting and extremely fun.

The Paddle Pop shot tasted exactly like a melted down Paddle Pop ice cream, but with a shot of alcohol in it. It was not only interesting, but also potent -definitely something you'd want to drink. The dare shots are also definitely a must-try with a group of friends. It's an extremely novel concept! that I've not seen elsewhere in Singapore.

For reasonable prices, this tongue-in-cheek shots bar has definitely made it to the top of my list for the best place to go to to have fun with friends!

Strawberry breakfast Smile Apr 14, 2013

The McDonald's at Potong Pasir has revamped for quite a while now and I thought I would go back to see the changes. The interior is now complete with cushioned bar-top seats and new, wooden tables -definitely more chic! I decided to have hotcakes for breakfast and chose to try the new-on-their-menu Strawberry Hotcakes. Not really a huge fan of hot fudge with pancakes so I opted for a fruitier option.

The hotcakes meal is $5.50 be it whether you choose the hot fudge or the strawberry and it comes with a hash brown and a choice of coffee or tea. I opted for coffee with milk, no extra charge there.

The hotcakes are fluffy and warm, when I opened the lid of the styrofoam pack there was actually steam! The butter melted nicely on the warm pancakes, and when I poured the strawberry syrup on top, it was chunky with the berry bits -delicious. The strawberry syrup is sweet, but fruity, and the chunks of strawberry provide texture. The stack of three pancakes is just right and the butter gave a semi salty creaminess to the whole dish. Definitely worth every penny of my $5.50. Definitely a 4.5/5.

The hashbrown wasn't as hot as I'd liked it to be, but it was still fresh and the oil hadn't coagulated. It was savoury and crispy -but not burnt, and on the whole decent. My coffee was also strong, and I'm glad I took it with milk. I also helped myself to the sugar packets until it was sweet enough to taste. Strong yet milky coffee, that was piping hot -definitely a pick me up in the morning.

Service is also really brisk. Every order is timed using a mini hourglass such that if they exceed the 60 second mark for completing your order, you get a free vanilla cone coupon. This really pushes the staff to do even better -not only serving the food quickly, but at the same time, not compromising the quality of their service.

Potong Pasir is an idyllic, quiet place, for a lazy Sunday breakfast, and it definitely is one of my favourite McDonald's -the staff is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and the food has heart.

Happy hour drinks Smile Apr 14, 2013
Categories : Bars/Lounges

Apart from serving up relatively good food (I've tried the aglio olio once and it was really tasty!), the happy hour drink promotions are really reasonable too -$28 nett for a jug, $13 for a pint, $8 for a glass of housepour and $10 for a glass of wine. Happy hour ends at 9 though, but it's more than enough for you to get a drink or two. We ordered a jug of tequila with lime juice, and it came in a nice tall rectangular jug with lime wedges in it.

The drink was tasty -not too strong, and the lime was refreshing. The choice of mixer can range from soft drinks to juices, the extensive selection is really varied. The servers will mix the jug before pouring out the drinks into individual glasses so be assured that the drinks are well mixed.

I've been coming back here multiple times for drinks and the atmosphere is delightful. We usually sit outside because the inside gets really cold, and sometimes I'd rather people watch than enjoy the live bands performing inside. The setting is dim, with electronic candles on each table, with cushioned swivel seats that alternate blue and white, on black matted tables. Service is quite efficient, even though they take quite long to return you your card if you paid using a credit card, and when they're busy you may have to remind them!

The best thing perhaps about this place during happy hour is that you get reasonably cheap drinks (nett! that's the best!), a chill setting and decent service. You will want to try their cocktails as well, it comes in a good-size glass for $18-$21, as well as their bar foods/main courses. The presentation of the food is also way better than expected and it's also worth the 20-odd dollars that you'll be paying for it. Will definitely come back for the food and drinks.

Relish! Smile Dec 05, 2013
Categories : Burgers and Sandwiches

Located on the second floor of Cluny Court is Relish by Wild Rocket! A gastronomic dining concept that specialises in burgers in a semi-casual setting, relish does it all -With a tasteful decor that fashions artful, giant lamps hanging from the ceiling, to the strong, wooden tables and nifty bar counter, this place is really perfect to impress a date ;)

While burgers can be pretty pricey for $19-$20+ for a beef burger, (my tofu burger was $18!), it's definitely worth a try!
They also serve mains like spaghettis (hae bee hiam spaghetti, anyone?) and a small range of desserts (speaking of which, you do not die happy until you've tasted the strawberry cheesecake)

The tofu burger is literally tofu with portobello and cheese -I really liked the grilled tofu! The texture was just right, and the flavours were subtle. Served with greens and relish (which was amazing, by the way -can you imagine if relish served crap relish?! lol) and fries on the side, this was effortlessly delicious. I would have liked the portobello a bit more seasoned though -it had the raw, earthy mushroom taste that some may like? The fries were crispy on the outside and so fluffy on the inside. I just couldn't get enough of it! Super addictive.

Please do yourselves a favour and spend a good $9.80 on the deconstructed strawberry cheesecake. It's their signature dish and it's the best thing ever created in the dessert history of mankind. With the cheesecake middle and berry compote, the texture is balanced out by nuts and bits of graham crusts, finished off with a smooth dollop of cream on the top. Served up in a martini glass, this dessert gets you drunk with love. The euphoria from the creamy texture, salty biscuit and perfect richness hits the sweet spot. 5/5
