Gelato on a Saturday! Smile Jun 22, 2013
Categories : Italian

Gusttimo Gelato can be tricky to find if you're not familiar with ION. It's located at the corner of the first level, next to Alfresco Gusto bistro. Just a small stall, it can attract quite a crowd despite its steep prices. It's $7.20 for a piccolo, or a cup with 3 flavours -don't be deceived by the '3 flavours', the cup size is actually quite tiny!! You can only opt for the $8.40 cup, with 4 flavours but really -the 3 flavours are more than enough!

*There is also a takehome pack for $20++. A bit pricey if you ask me.

They offer a good range of flavours including fruitier varieties such as Peach Lavender, Mango, Kiwi and Strawberry. They also have more decadent choices such as their (top favourite, no surprise) chocolate, walnut, Caffe Latte (coffee) and Cookies & Cream.

They close from 4.30 to 6pm, so it's best to go at 4pm or even before, or else the favourite flavours run out!
Mango, Caffe Latte, Strawberries & Cream

Mango, Caffe Latte, Strawberries & Cream

This combination is both fruity and creamy. The mango had a fragrant mango aroma, which reminded me of preserved mangoes...Surprisingly it wasn't too sweet! The strawberries & cream were delicious, it wasn't too icy in texture and had the faint taste of real strawberries instead of just the artificial flavouring that we have become accustomed to. The coffee was fantastic, slightly bitter aftertaste -but I liked how creamy and smooth it was.
Latte, Caffe Latte, Cookies & Cream

Latte, Caffe Latte, Cookies & Cream

Latte is presumably a milk flavour -it gave a contrast to the otherwise sweet flavours I had chosen. Caffe Latte had offset it slightly with its bitterness, but latte gave it a creamy finish that wasn't too sweet -it didn't have the sickening milky aromaa, it was instead plain but not boring, simple but not inadequate. The cookies & cream flavour was sightly more interesting. It had the distinct flavour of cookie dough, but without the cloying sweetness of it. It was a nice rich addition, complementing the smooth Latte as well as the mildly bitter coffee. A good combination.

I also tried the Panna Cotta flavour, which went much better than expected! It had more body compared to Latte, but compensated with its sweetness that was slightly too much for me if it were paired with stronger flavours such as Cookies & Cream or Caffe Latte. It was rich and had the creamy taste of an actual panna cotta -this i wasn't expecting. Delicious -but best paired with something slightly fruity and mild like the strawberries & cream.

While the flavours weren't totally controversial and the price is...well, not exactly desireable, this place serves gelato which isn't too sweet -this we all enjoyed. The gelato was dense, smooth and creamy without being sickeningly sweet. The portion is just right, but the price is a little steep.

Unique Makis! Smile Jun 22, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar is situated at the Food Republic level of Wisma. Nondescript, cramped and noisy (or rather, vibrant..haha), this place still attracts hoards of people nevertheless. We arrived at 12.20 on a Saturday afternoon and there was already a queue...which we waited in for 45 minutes before getting a table for 4. The bar counters get freed up pretty fast, so if you're in twos its best to just go ahead -anything more than 2, it gets tricky to share the sushi!

The service is relatively slow, there is little attention to detail (e.g. I had to refill my own green tea!) -I suppose I would have been slightly happier if they had displayed a greater sense of urgency in clearing the tables to increase turnover rate...But they were relatively understaffed, unable to cope with the volume of diners. If you're willing to wait, (adding on another 15-20 minutes for the food to be served!) this place will be OK for you!

They don't serve water here, but try out their green tea (SWEETENED!). I find the sweetened version less bitter, but it's not too sweet like the canned versions. Delicious and refreshing -I honestly really liked it and I would come back to have my sushi complemented with this perfect glass of green tea!

We ordered a variety of cooked dishes, appetisers as well as makis to try -We ordered Sashimi Moriawase ($20), Original Koh Maki ($12), Shiok Maki Gen 1 ($16.80), Crappy Maki ($18), Yaki Udon ($10), Seaweed appetiser ($5), Agedashi Tofu ($4), Miso Eggplant ($5) and a Pitan Maki ($16.80).

The agedashi tofu is crispy on the outside yet wonderfully soft and fluffy when you sink your teeth into it. I would have preferred slightly more soy sauce and it was a tad bland for my liking. The outside could have been slightly more crisp, but texture wise it was decent.

The seaweed was nothing special - just ordinary seaweed in a tangy, savoury salad mix. It was refreshing and slightly savoury though, much to our delight. The Miso eggplant really surprised me however, it was piping hot, straight off the grill, with the skin edges charred. The miso gave the eggplant a different taste -it was almost like the miso had melded with the soft eggplant. There was also a slight BBQ aroma to it. Deliciously fragrant and worth the price!

The Pitan maki had bits of raw fish in it (salmon?) and was rolled with fish roe and a special "pitan", or century egg, sauce to cover it. I thought it was a little strange as I'm really not a fan of century egg (there were cut up bits in the sauce!), but I was slightly surprised as the aroma wasn't overpoweringly strong, and it added a nice creamy texture to the maki. Not an ideal complement to the raw fish sushi, but interesting and unique enough to try if you're feeling adventurous.

The yaki udon wasn't served as hot as we would have liked (there wasn't steam wafting from itsad) -Ignoring this fact, the taste was deliciously perfect! The noodles had a slight spring to it and the gooey egg just coats every strand. It's slightly sticky and the flavour combination goes well with this consistency. There is a trace of Japanese soy sauce in this dish, lots of egg, topped with bonito flakes, making for an extremely savoury and mouth-watering main dish. We recommend you order one of this to share, plus a good few varieties of sushi to ensure that you try both their makis and their cooked food!

The Crappy Maki (I hope I saw this right... i could have sworn it was a Crappy Maki) had soft shell crab (deep fried!) rolled into this maki, topped with a slice of seared fish. I must warn you though, the smoky aroma of the seared fish may not be appreciated by everyone -it has a really strong BBQ aroma! Other than this slightly unpleasant (only to me perhaps? my dining companions were perfectly content with this maki!) smoky flavour, the crunch of the soft shell crab is a delight as it provides contrast to the otherwise somewhat-delicate maki.

The sashimi comes in various portions and prices, we ordered the medium range $20 one, with a good assortment of 5 different fish varieties (4 actually, with octopus!). There is a $38 portion which gives more fish, so this would be better for sharing with a larger group. The sashimi wasn't cold when served and that bugged me a little. However, the slices were thick and had a slightly creamy taste to it that was not only refreshing, but bordering on indulgent! Imagine if it were served cold... perfect!! This assortment also gives us a good chance to try the different fish -my favourite is definitely the swordfish as well as the salmon. Yum.

The Shiok Maki has a thin layer of fish (lightly grilled) on top of the sushi. It has avocado inside, and a rich sauce of what tastes like mayo + melted cheese ...Feeling the calories yet? That's not it, the maki is topped off with fish roe for the savoury crunch. LEGENDARY -but the creaminess proves to be a bit much for me as I couldn't go beyond 2 pieces ....hmm maybe this is because it was served later on, haha. It has a faint smoky smell as well, albeit not as strong as the Crappy Maki. This one is really rich in the flavour though -not for those who like their Japanese food clean-tasting and light!

The Koh signature maki had assorted seafood rolled into it (cooked seafood!) and you'd want to know that if you're looking for a conservative, sure-win, sure-to-be-popular-with-everyone maki -this is it. it is neither overly heavy on the sauce and flavour, not oddly unique (think: century-egg unique!) and not too controversial in taste/aroma. The bits of sesame made the sushi really aromatic, and I liked how the whole sushi turned out. Safe but delicious nonetheless! We unanimously agreed that this one is a sure-win!

Koh Grill & Sushi may not have been worth the 1 hour wait (including waiting for food to be served!), but it still gave a decent quality for the prices. The sushi is great to share, and for those who want quicker fuss-free dining (ironic since waiting for tables already takes a fair bit of time haha), they also offer set lunches. These range from $10-$17, and have sets with unagi, teriyaki chicken, yasai tempura etc etc.

There is great variety here, and we suggest the signatures to be safe -Shiok Maki (oh yes, they have this in 1st and 2nd gen. We only tried the 1st gen though!) and their Koh signature Maki. All must-tries! If you want to avoid a lunchtime queue, go before 12pm, or make a reservation -but don't expect stellar service here! You also have to walk to the counter to make payment which can be very messy when there are others waiting to pay (there is no proper line/order for making payment!). One good thing however, is that they accept credit card payment. There is also 10% discount for passion card members during weekdays!

Hokkien Mee for Lunch! Smile Jun 21, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Food Court | Noodles

Newton Hokkien Mee in koufu is one of the better Hokkien Mee I've tasted in a food court. It's difficult to miss it, given that the storefront has two large prawns printed on their glass....Yes, it's tacky but it does the trick! The foodcourt is decorated in a sports-stadium style, with basketball hoops and wallpaper resembling stadium stands...A bit strange if not for the fact that it's located right next to the Singapore Indoor Stadium and the to-be sports hub.

This stall gets quite busy during the lunchtime so expect a queue to form! The service however, is brisk, so no need to worry that the waiting time will be excruciatingly long. Besides, one can also watch the cook fry the noodles from the glass panels smile

Food court's pretty large, and spacious -there are enough seats, and some tables are long/large enough to seat up to around 8. Turnover is high and even if you don't get a seat immediately, tables are usually freed up fast.

This stall specialises in the Hokkien Mee, but they also offer other things like Oyster Omelet, Char Kway Teow and their newest addition, Pork Rib Hokkien Mee (hmm, not too sure how that will pan out!). The noodles go for either $4, $5 or $6 depending on the portion. The $4 portion is definitely substantial enough for one person, though! There is also no extra charges for takeaway smile

Although I wouldn't recommend for you to takeaway the noodles as it absorbs all the prawn stock leaving it slightly on the dry side, it isn't all that bad. The noodles are well-immersed in the deliciously rich prawn stock and hence the flavour becomes more intense -overlooking the fact that it's also drier. Pros and cons, I suppose.

The chilli has a distinct hae bi hiam taste, which is lovely because it ensures that this potent blend of chilli does not fall flat in a disappointing attempt to spice up the dish. The noodles aren't overcooked/soggy even though I had it take-away. The lime also gave the whole dish a nice touch. A good mix of both white bee hoon and yellow mee, this hokkien mee is not only flavoursome, but the tastes also balance out nicely as it wasn't overly salty.

We recommend that if you like your noodles with more stock that you can actually slurp up in a delightful, slippery mess, have your noodles on the spot! Chilli lovers should also ask for extra chilli because I certainly didn't think that that meagre spoonful of sambal was going to be enough! Their Char Kway Teow is not as fantastic as their prawn noodles, so give the prawn mee a go if you can only try one item on their menu.

I might point out that one thing disappointing about my noodles was that there were only 2 prawns in it. I was a bit surprised as I had expected at least 3 given that the price was $4. No matter, it (sort of!) compensated with its sizeable portion of noodles. Filling and delicious.

Snack anytime! Smile Jun 21, 2013

Categories : Frozen Yogurt

A real fan of ice cream and all treats frozen, frozen yogurt tops my list of frozen desserts because of its low fat and calorie content, as well as its customisability. Everytime I'm in the vicinity, I'll stop by for Yoguru's frozen yogurt. It's been in the market for a good few years now, and I've been religiously eating their froyo since 5 years back.

Initially drawn to their yogurt because of the enticing 0% fat, I was hooked on it because it was so smooth and creamy. Sheer delight in one's mouth, every spoonful of froyo is delightfully sweet with a slightly tangy aftertaste. The yogurt isn't sickeningly sweet nor cloying as one would expect with typical frozen desserts, instead, it has a distinct yogurt taste without the intense sourness. It's free from lumps (yikes!) and the frozen iciness that one will get at some yogurt kiosks, and the yogurt is cold & creamy enough to be mistaken for yogurt flavoured soft ice cream.

They also offer add-ons such as fruits and nuts, or for those who prefer something heartier -cereal or even chocolate bars. A personal fan of the true, original yogurt taste, I rarely add on any toppings. The toppings are merely $1.10 each (if I remember correctly) to jazz up your yogurt.

The smallest cup (the one I bought!) goes for only $3.20 and is one of the more reasonably priced ones in the market that really give you good value -as you can see, the yogurt fills the cup and it swirls up to a good height! They come in several other sizes and the prices come up to about $4+ for plain yogurt. They also offer seasonal flavours such as blueberry, mango, pomegrenate etc, but these a several cents more expensive. The take-home pack is also available for those who want to bring some of this lovable goodness home to share with the family smile

Even though the cafe space is small and most people takeaway their yogurt, they do offer a small seating area with several tables. The place is generally clean, and quiet (for the most part!) as Kallang Leisure is generally a quiet mall catering to the residents living nearby. The signature purple yoguru panels are a must-have here, and the flavours/toppings rarely vary from outlet to outlet.

Staff is always friendly and they'll greet me with a "Hi what can I get you!" with a smile that hits like a ray of sunshine -not sure how the staff manage to do that every time but I've never been let down by their service. At such a reasonable price and with low calories/fat, Yoguru is my all time favourite go-to place for a snack.

Fantastic Taiwanese Dessert! Smile Jun 19, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Taiwanese | Chinese Desserts | Bubble Tea/ Tea

Although I've not had the privilege of flying to Taiwan and personally savouring their street food and delectable desserts that are oh-so-famed, I admit being pretty skeptical of the introduction of Blackball desserts into the local culture. Even though it's still distinctly Asian, with elements such as sweet potato not being an ingredient alien to desserts in Singapore, it's no secret that the youths of Singapore aren't fans of such "traditional dessert ingredients" such as yam/sweet potato.

Blackball has a handful of outlets sprinkled all over Singapore, and Marine Parade is the most convenient for me. Located on the second floor of 112 Katong, this small dessert stall is more than meets the eye. Located just round the corner from the entrance, it's opposite New Balance. Hidden away from the central mall area, it can be easy to miss!

The ordering style is pretty much the same as all the other kiosks like Gong Cha -except that this dessert stall offers seating. The tables can seat up to 4 persons, or you can choose to sit at the long "bar", facing the kitchen. Not a large space, but cosy enough for a post-dinner get together over fantastic desserts/drinks.

In black and in trend!
Blackball Signature

Blackball Signature

I ordered a Blackball Signature ($4.90) to share for 2 persons, with the choice of having it "icy". You can choose between hot, cold or "icy". Their signature is their best seller, with various sweet potato jellies/golden sweet potato as well as yam, their home made grass jelly, pearls, red beans and a tiny saucer of (coconut?) milk to pour over this seemingly messy dessert. What would seem to be sweet potato 'Q's, and golden sweet potato have the distinct sweetness of sweet potatoes, but without the carrot-like texture of it. (Those who aren't fans of sweet potato will know what I'm talking about!) Instead, it's chewier and has a texture like the jellies you'd find in Bo Bo Char Char -so this easily captures the hearts of the teens while still maintaining a taste that the older folks would like.

The grass jelly is chewy, not too sweet, and goes perfectly with the pearls and red bean. It is however, the coconut sauce is elevates this dessert to the next level -it gives it a rich and creamy flavour that complements the slight bitterness of the jelly. The centre has shaved ice which has a syrup drenching it -surprisingly it's not overly sweet, and the ice is smooth -not coarse. It reminds me vaguely of ice jelly, the local dessert, but with a dilluted dash of gula melaka. The subtle flavours all come together very neatly.

Blackball offers drinks as well as other desserts where you can customise the composition of Yam balls, Golden Sweet Potato and Yam 'Q's in your dessert -a very unique and thoughtful touch, we thought. However, the KING of all would be their Blackball Signature -a lovely amalgamation of the best. If you're thirsty, you may try the drinks but we highly recommend going for the desserts. The yam and sweet potato jellies/balls are also deceptively filling, so share this with a friend and it'll make for a perfect dessert portion!

Service is quick and the staff is friendly, they're also very helpful to those who are ordering for the first time. Try the signatures if you're caught in a dilemma of what to order -you can't go wrong with them! Much better than Honeymoon dessert/ HK Sheng Kee in my opinion. The unique creations you can find here seem like a strange combination, but give it a chance and it may just surprise you...
