Tiong Bahru Chwee Kway  OK Nov 29, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre

Tiong Bahru Chwee Kway seemed to be branching everywhere in Singapore.

This take-away packet of 6 pieces Chwee Kway costing $1.80 at 30 cents each.

Breakfast bought by a friend from her neighbourhood market.

I find the texture of the chwee kway slightly soft probably due to the rice flour mixture.

The "chai poh" or preserved radish is not too sweet nor salty just right and I like the colour of the radish which is not too dark unlike, some chai poh.

I can only taste the radish and there were definitely no dried shrimps as part of the ingredients for this topping.

Dry Brasied Beef Hor Fun OK Nov 28, 2013
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Desserts and Cakes

Going through the Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert menu, I decided to order a plate of dry braised beef hor fun for early lunch.

Priced at S$7.90++

I like the silky texture of thin strips of Hor Fun which is a bit unusual from other restaurants.

There were a few pieces of chunk braised beef shanks and tendons cooked together with chunk white carrots.

The gravy that goes along with this dish was light and tasty. A few pieces of the blanched Hongkong baby Kai Lan
added freshness to this dish.

It would have been a better meal if the beef shanks are braised longer when the meat becomes extremely tender almost gelatinous.

Lotus Seed Dessert OK Nov 28, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

Its not easy to find a dessert stall that provides a good bowl of Lotus Seed dessert also known as Lien Chee Suan.

I happened to stop by at Bedok Interchange and by-pass this Happy Dessert stall and order a bowl to try.

I paid S$2.30 for a small bowl of hot dessert with a generous amount of cooked lotus seeds in syrup.

The taste was not very sweet and the lotus seeds were not too soft.

There were not enough pandan leave flavour in the making of this dessert which makes the taste a little bland.

Finally, I managed to buy a few pieces of Cempedak from Mr TehTarik Coffeeshop since I was early.
These Cempedak are so saleable and are sold out very fast.

Each Cempedak pulp dipped in battered and deep fried in hot oil.

It has to be taken immediately after frying for its fragrance and crispiness.

The Cempedak taste is sweet and closer to a Jackfruit family with a gummy taste, but not quite as strong as the smell of the durian. I prefer the taste of Cempedak than Jackfruit.

The Wadai I bought from the same stall has nothing except flour and some small pieces of vegetables.

I believed this is the vegan version of Wdai.

Normally Wadai are prepared with a few pieces of small prawns scattered in each dough.

I like the salty taste of the Wadai.

If there were a few pieces of small prawns added it would be even be more flavorful. The green chillies that goes with the Wadai is just Ommph.

Both Cempedak and Wadai are priced at 50 cents each.

First Visit to Sushi Express OK Nov 26, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Today is the first day of Sushi Express opening at Tampines One.

No chawanmushi only miso soup available.

They serve hygienic tea bags and wasabi sachets.

Limited to only 50 minutes of feasting the sushi.

It's like finding oneself fighting for food since everyone are surrounded with a shared conveyor belt.

The prices are very reasonable and affordable to students.

All the items are priced at only S$1.00 from today until Friday. The normal price is S$1.50 per plate.

We have never visited any outlet of Sushi Express before and since we happened to be at Cold Storage for our grocery shopping, my husband and I decided to try this outlet since there were still seats available.

We are small eaters. In total we paid S$13.00++ for thirteen plates of sushi.

Hamaguri Clam Nigiri Sushi

The sushi was resh and succulent.

Kasunoko (Yellow Herring Roe)smile

They were crunchy and salty with lots yellow roe chunks.

Mock Abalone

Though its not the genuine abalone, the taste is similar to fresh abalone.
When consumed raw, the aromas of the sea are enjoyed along with a very crunchy flavour.

Surf Clam

The surf clam was crunchy and fresh.

Tako - Octopussad

Lightly marinated tentacle. The meat was tough unlike fresh ones which are crunchy.

Royal Size Scallop

The giant scallop was indeed value for money. I could taste the freshness of the seafood flavour.
Which is the highlight of this sushi meal.

We were far away from the kitchen area therefore we did not get the first dibs of some other varieties of sushi.

By the time we left the place, there were about 30 to 40 people outside the restaurant.

Drop by to Sushi Express if you like their sushi.
The promotion for S$1.00 each plate is valid until this coming Friday.
