Good Food @ Chinatown OK Oct 24, 2012
Categories : Hawker Centre

I had never gone to the food centre at Chinatown. It was until this afternoon that I came to this place. I decided to try out the food from this stall because I heard that the food from this stall is good.
Chee Cheong Fun with Yam Cake

Chee Cheong Fun with Yam Cake

First off, a dish of chee cheong fun and yam cake is what I had. The cuts of chee cheong fun are put on top of the pieces of yam cake. The yam cake and chee cheong fun are served with sesame oil, chili sauce and dark sweet sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds that make the dish appetising. The yam cake is pale purple and does not have any cube of yam appearing on its surface. It is soft and springy. It has a slight yam taste. The chee cheong fun is factory made. It is smooth but not as soft and springy as handmade ones. However, the sesame oil, chili sauce and dark sweet sauce add flavours to the dish. Hence, together with the yam cake, the chee cheong fun tastes better with all three of these. smile
Glutinous Rice Dumpling

Glutinous Rice Dumpling

If yam cake and chee cheong fun is not enough, a glutinous rice dumpling is included in the list of what I had for lunch too. The dumpling is unwrapped and cut into pieces before serving. It is stir-fried glutinous rice dumpling with salted egg yolk. The glutinous rice on the surface is brown and looks oily and glossy. The rice is sticky and chewy. The meat in the dumpling is minced. That surprises me because I thought the meat should come in big chunks. Nonetheless, it still has a bit of its meaty flavour but is a bit too hard to chew. The chestnut is soft and becomes a gritty mash in my mouth. The salted yolk is crumbly and not so golden yellow. However, it is best to have a salted egg yolk in the dumpling. The egg yolk is not too salty. It adds its unique eggy flavour to the dumpling. smile

Well, I have never had such nice food before. The dishes looks and tastes good but can be improved from my point of view. I do not mind coming there once more.

Beef hor fun

Beef hor fun

I have never had hor fun for a long time. Hence, during lunch hours, I came to this stall at Ghim Moh Food Centre for a dish of beef hor fun. This is something the stall is known for.

There are slices of beef on top of the hor fun and pieces of vegetables on the side of the hor fun. The whole dish is covered in gravy that contains bits of eggs which make the dish appealing. The hor fun is smooth and springy. The beef is tender and chewy. The pieces of vegetables are crunchy. The gravy is smooth but a bit too salty. The whole dish tastes great with some pickled chili. tongue

The beef hor fun is a wonderful and tasty dish. I won't mind coming to the stall again. smile

Simple but good.

Simple but good.

I have never been to Geylang Serai Market and Food Centre before. I learnt that there's a stall selling cendol. Hence, the afternoon, I made a visit to there for a bowl of cendol to cool myself down.

The cendol from the stall is made up of only coconut milk gravy, strips of cendol and a ball of shaved ice with gula melaka syrup on it. The strips of cendol are springy. The dessert has the rich fragrance of the coconut milk and the sweetness of the gula melaka. The shaved ice makes the dessert cool and refreshing. smile

The cendol looks simple. It has not much of ingredients in it. However, the cendol tastes good. As the saying goes, "Simplicity is the best policy."

Outram Park Fried Kway Teow Mee Smile Sep 27, 2012

Mmm......!!!!

Mmm......!!!!

I've never had char kway teow for long. I decided to have a plate of it from this stall at Hong Lim Food Centre in the afternoon. The stall looks old but is highly reviewed for its char kway teow.

The char kway teow is not just fried kway teow. It is kway teow stir-fried with yellow mee. The dish looks oily and mostly dark. The bits of egg make the dish more appealing. The yellow mee is springy. The kway teow is not only springy, it is also smooth. The cockles are bouncy and juicy. The bean sprouts do not lose their crunchiness after stir-frying. The pieces of lard are crunchy as well. They make the dish more flavourful but leave an oily burnt aftertaste. The whole dish tastes savoury and sweet. A bit of sambal makes the dish looks and tastes better.

Overall, this plate of char kway teow is simply delicious. lol

The Daily Scoop Ice Cream Cafe Smile Sep 23, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

The Daily Scoop in Clementi is an ice cream cafe situated in a peaceful neighbourhood. The cafe inside is cooling and ambient, with music soothing to the ears.
"OKAYAlah"

"OKAYAlah"

A few days ago, I went there to try one of the ice cream flavours. I had the kaya ice cream the cafe called "OKAYAlah" ice cream served on an ice cream cone. The ice cream looks like vanilla ice cream because it is as white as vanilla ice cream. The ice cream is chilling, soft, smooth and melts in the mouth. It has the sweetness of the kaya probably due to the fragrance and richness of the coconut milk. There are bits of kaya in the ice cream. The ice cream leaves a sweet milky aftertaste. The wafer cone is hard, crispy and crunchy. A scoop of ice cream on cone costs $3.20. Well, I'll accept that. smile
Lychee Martini ice cream on waffle. Great!

Lychee Martini ice cream on waffle. Great!

This evening, I went to the cafe once more. I had this time a scoop of Lychee Martini ice cream served with a waffle. The golden brown waffle is sprinkled with icing sugar and topped with chocolate syrup. A scoop of the ice cream is put on top of the waffle. The waffle is thick and round. It is crispy on the outside but soft and spongy on the inside. The chocolate syrup is bitter and sweet. The ice cream is sweet and fruity with a bit bitter alcoholic taste. There are also pieces of lychee in the ice cream that gave the ice cream crunchiness and make it taste more fruitiness. The aftertaste of the ice cream is sweet, milky and fruity. The waffle tastes great with the chocolate syrup and better when eaten with the ice cream too. The waffle with the ice cream costs $5.80. Wow, so expensive, but I'll accept it too. smile

Well, there is nothing to describe the home-made ice cream from the cafe. Nothing BUT two words: SIMPLY DELICIOUS! mad
