Fish Belly's a Surprize Smile Oct 01, 2013

First of all i must say i missed out taking photo of the samsui chicken, my bad. Came by with my family, 4 of us, ordered 1 normal set of chicken, Hometown Fried Fish Belly and potato leaves. Its my 1st time trying the fish belly and i must say i'm impressed, i think cooking the dish with scallion, green onion and red cut chilli really enhanced the flavour a lot. The fish belly taste just like fish meat with a bit of skin as well. Its probably fried beforehand then stir fry and thicken with sweet sauce. Its a perfect companion for plain rice. We chose the ah gong fan shu ye which is the spicy version and it was delightful as well, the potato leaves were the young skinny stalk type, though its clumped together, its really nice tasting. My total bill works out to be $63.44 for an early dinner at 430pm. This includes 4 bottomless chrysanthemum servings. The place is pretty empty at this time.

Bar Seats FTW Smile Jul 02, 2013

Decided to eat lunch here since there was no queue at all at around 1215pm. Given a counter seat and turn up a good experience to see the sushi chef go about preparing his food. 3 chefs behind the counter which is mainly the raw food section, cooked food kitchen is closed concept. Cleanliness is definitely a priority here as all the chefs were gloved properly. Also got to see how to 40cents salmon soya sauce sushi is prepared. The chef actually have it all prepared in a box container, prior to serving he will torch with with a portable flame from a canister. As usual you can only order 2 pieces per pax. I also ordered the unagi don $12 which is grilled eel with scrambled egg on rice. Comes with a miso soup as well. I counted there are 8 slices of eel given but egg was quite in abundance. The rice went went with the scrambled egg sauce and the eel was perfect. Above $10, your green tea will be foc. Total bill $15.05 including service charge and gst.

Yu Kee has francise stalls everywhere in Singapore but this Toa Payoh koufu outlet impressed me on this occasion. Ordered a $4 kway chap with the mini kway teow type. My mixed set includes, eggs, braised pork, fish cake and big intestines. I would say what makes this yu kee stall different is the richly flavored sauce and soup taste. its just a little more than the usual franchise stalls i've tried, and i must say i liked it alot. Eating the nice kway tiao kia with the sauce is a perfect combination. Definitely prefer this version of the kway as it will not clump together if left for long. Also eating kway chap with the anchovies mixed belachan chilli is also a delight.

Early Bird Gets The Worm Smile Apr 23, 2013

For many months, i have been hoping for a chance to review this kway chap stall. I only come near this area on Sundays and the stall will be closed by the time i finish my games at the secondary school nearby. I happen to have a chance to come here at 1030am and i could witness the bustle of the stall with the old grandma, behind the stall, serving out dish after dishes of kway chap combinations. Ordered the mixed set without pig skin of course, it came with tau pok, big intestines, fish cake and eggs. Especially like the big intestines as it doesn't have those usual foul smell of a improperly cleaned intestines, and more importantly its easy to bite and yet chewy, perfectly done for a braised item. The chilli also enhances the other arts as well. Th soup is also to die for, overshadowing the kway itself. Without a doubt i gulped up every bit of the soup smile Last but not least, they most impressive item got to be the price. Whens the last time you find a place that serves $2.50 kway chap including the kway as well. Lai Xing does. Sure hopes grandma passes on the skills to the what seemingly family members looking helpers so that we can continue to enjoy such hawker goodness.

Rare Opportunity Smile Apr 01, 2013

Have always wanted to try this but gave up at sight of the long queue. The opportunity came where there was no queue at this stall, it was 845pm already. Though i'm not a fish lover but decided to try this ikan panggang after seeing quite a few table of diners eating it. At $5.50 ($4.95 after kopitiam card discount), you can one grilled fish, rice with curry sauce, some vege, a sunny side-up and a bowl of soup. The fish given is more of a fish fillet than a whole fish. The fish is dipped into their special sweet sauce after grilling on a bbq stove. the sauce "stains" the fish well and combined perfectly with it. i like the fact the fish is grilled to bite worthy - crispy in texture. The sambal chilli offered at the counter is also worth mentioning, similar to yukee type with ikan bilis inside, it just brings out the indonesian cuisine very well. The soup that came along is a disappointment though with no ingredients in it and tasted very blant. I would love to try the chicken version next time, which looks a little like breaded fried chicken (imagine fish and chip texture look alike drumstick)
