Just Behind Bugis+ Smile Dec 21, 2012

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Chinese | Coffeeshop | Roasted Meat

New Rong Liang Ge is situated within coffeeshop located at 269B, just behind the revamped Bugis+. Its a pretty small coffeeshop and i remember there used to be a famous scissor cut rice here.

But now the STAR stall is this roasted meat stall. The queue itself explains the popularity of this stall to food hunters in the region.

In fact i also see quite a few couples who look like tourist coz of the maps on the table. The stall front is filled with all variety of roasted delicacies, from the usual char siew to roast pork to roast duck to roast chix to bbq wings. There is also a tower-like steamer just seen behind the preparation area, thats where they keep warm the soups. Its self service here, you collect your own cutlery and help yourself to the sambal chilli. I ordered the triple mix of cs,rp and rd for two, also had a herbal chicken soup to go along.

Quantity wise you will not be disappointed and a key point is the meats do not look fatty, mostly the lean meat version. i like my rice flooded with gravy like the photo below. Taste-wise, i do prefer the roast duck and roast pork over the char siew. The roast duck especially had nice roasted skin.
Though i've had better, it was overall a good eat. If i have to complain is the additional dark sauce added to the char siew makes the gravy slightly salty.

The herbal soup came with one whole drumstick and very edible herbs, sign of the soup being boiled for long. Total bill was for $13.70 only, quite value for money. For my next visit i probably want to try their noodles next. And ya do come by early for dinner coz the close about eightish.

One of the best dinner options for a rainy day, Seng Kee kidney mee sua. This stall has been expanding continuously, now it actually almost the entire row of shop-houses less the motorbike shop.

There's even air conditioned option now, not sure if there's a difference in price though. But i will usually sit at the main shop front.

That's where you get to choose the different fish slices on offer. Most of the seats at the main stall area is outdoor style with plastic chairs, nice and cooling i would say since the lane is closed for them to put all the tables around the stall.

As i came alone this time, i ordered the big bowl of mee sua all for myself. There was no more kidney left so i settled for pork and liver combination.

I must say they are pretty consistent with their soup taste standard and be warned, the chilli offered is really spicy but being a flavorful soup base, with that additional tinge of spice its always quite exciting smile .

The mee sua is also garnish with green onions and fried shallots. Next time i will opt for just green onions to make the soup less oily. Anyway I strongly recommend diners to have the big bowl individually, you will not be disappointed. I've never tried another stall with such unique soup taste. Soup is dark colored and not too starchy. The mee sua is also of good quality and does not stick together. You pay after all your food is delivered. My big bowl costs $6. Place is a popular supper joint as its opened till 4am.

Sauce the winner Smile Dec 10, 2012

Categories : Noodles

Had been to this stall a few times already but have never shared the review which this time i will not fail coz its really worth the recommendation. Most drivers will notice this stall driving along Balestier road. This is a coffeeshop style set up where you place your order at the counter, pay up first then wait to be served. Ordered the normal abalone noodles with home made sauce toufu and 2 fish cake. noodle quantity given is small but the minced pork, chilli and dark sauce mixed is a pleaser. The abalone is the smaller head type and served on a satay stick in 3 slices. Also it comes with one fish ball and 1 meat ball. For me its not the noodle sauce that's the winner ,its the toufu sauce, thick and starchy, it went so well with the fried toufu and minced pork. Actually half the time, i was pairing this toufu sauce with my noodles instead. The preparation style also help to enhance it, kept warm in the typical xiao wan mian metal hotpot. Dun miss this out if you are here!

Glass Noodle for the Win Smile Nov 23, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Thai

Been to this place a few times already but have not tried their fried glass noodle ($7) before. The glass noodle color is darker than the usual fried tang hoon of cze char stall. It's fried together with chicken pieces, baby kailan, carrots and egg. I would give its taste 8/10 being a person fond of unhealthy fried stuff smile Both the food portion and taste were just right for me. I also ordered fried chicken to go along but i would rate that pretty normal and for the price of $10, its on the high side.

$1 KoSong Prata Smile Nov 23, 2012
Categories : Indian | Halal

In my opinion these days, value for money $1 kosong prata is rare but i was terribly wrong after my visit to Zam Zam. Talking about pratas, it has always puzzled me why crispy kosong prata is always smashed up before serving, i guess it makes it easier to tear? Thats exactly why when my order for zam zam kosong prata caught my attention that it came unsmashed! The 1st words that came out from my friend's mouth was "it looks crispy". Sure it does, and it taste well also. Eating it with the fish curry and sugar is a winning combination for me. Also the prata shape looks more like the typical egg prata instead of kosong. To sum up, i must say for $1, its well worth the money spent. I will definitely come back again.

On the otherhand, the bandung served was a little too sweet but its more positive than negative.
