Combo FTW Smile Sep 10, 2013

Thsi place needs no introduction, popular for its indonesian bbq style offering. I opted this time round for the combo - including both the grilled fish and grilled sotong. The fish has already been pre fried then heated up on the grill again before dipping into the sweet sauce prior to serving. Sotong is grilled from scratch though. This set sets me back at $6.75 only due to the 10% discount for kopitiam card users. Couldn't ask for more. With an additional fried egg and some cabbage as side, the curry drained rice is a perfect dinner option at a food court. Special mention to the sambal chilli which includes onion inside, not overly spicy and complements the meat well.

The season is in. So i joined in the durian fever. This stall has always been one of the highlights in that area infront of library, with its rows of durians and styrofoam packed durians on offer, owners shouting marketing chants etc. Price update, for D13/24 (i've no idea the difference actually), the smaller ones are going at $5 per durian, buy 4 get 1 free. After buying you can opt to eat at the small tables behind the stall or request them to be packed into styrofoam boxes for take away. The former option not for people who are fussy about cleanliness. There is a water tub available for hand washing after eating but they do not offer tissue or plain water as a perk though. Anyway the larger ones are going for $10 each and buy 2 get 1 free. The other premium durians are sold by weight from $8 per kg onward. i forgot to take my 5 durians but i can tell you on average it has around 4 seeds, medium size. Remember to request for 红肉instead of white, i feel that taste better.

Curry Fish Head Next Smile Aug 19, 2013

Yes, that's the dish i would definitely want to try next when i return again. Wanted to actually go to Penang Kitchen for lunch but decided to try out its neighbor instead. Initially when i was standing outside the shop, i struggled to find menu for 1 person i.e. individual portion. That's where a middle age man (i suspect he's the boss) came out and pointed to me there is a jumbo set and comes in 3 different variation. I opted for the jumbo pork chop set and chose to sit indoors. Interior wise its very much like next door, small and cosy, different combination of square and rectangular tables. The air con is sure a comfort to the sweltering heat outside. I also ordered a ice barley to quench my thirst. While seated, i observed many tables eating curry fish head, which is served on metal hotplate instead of clay-pot. And from far it looks really good. I also see the otah being a common dish ordered. From the wall deco i also see other potentials like the ngoh hiong, loh bak and sambal sotong.

When my dish arrives, i could understand why is it called a jumbo bowl, with a huge plate, you get one chicken wing, one potato, one hainanese pork chop in sweet sauce, one chap chye and a small portion of sambal belecan chilli. Curry gravy is poured over the rice, kind of reminds me of curry rice. i would like to give 2 recommendations here:
1 - to include at least 1 more potato
2 - cut the chap chye into small pieces
3 - provide more sambal chilli, the current portion is way too pathetic
4. check in advance with client whether they want curry or hainanese sweet sauce on the rice beforehand and offer more gravy if desired

#3 is suggested as that chilli packs a real good punch, comparable to those prepared by muslim counterparts for nasi padang stalls. The hainanese pork chop is also nicely prepared, with tomato and onions as well. the chap chye is nice but i really felt the vege slices was a tad too big for diners consumption. My bill adds up to be $11, $8 for the jumbo rice, $2 for drink and 10% service charge. I parked at kings centre beside this building and parking costs $1.50. I will return for the curry fish head and otah one day!

Wanted somewhere cool and quiet for lunch and decided upon this new joint along havelock road. Yes its air-conditioned smile. Parked near mscp blk 28A at beo crescent but i realize it may be better to park at blk 51 mscp instead since its just directly opposite. Simple interior deco with nice marble top tables and old style chairs. Likely a 40 seater restaurant. The staff speaks English so it was easy to make orders. There's also a lcd tv on the wall screening local tv, i enjoyed that and watch TV while lunching. From the menu it seems their signature dish is the stone pot rice so i opted for the lunch set meal, which includes one stone pot rice (i chose pork), one vegetable and one soy beancurd dessert and Chinese tea. I was also given some achar as appetizer. This achar is really thinly slice and the sour nature does bring out your lunch hunger LOL. My vege was served first, liked the sprinkled garlic on the vege. When the rice was served, it immediately reminded me its somewhat a in between of traditional Chinese claypot rice and Korean bibimbap. Served on a wooden holder, the bowl is so hot that anything that touches it sizzles for minutes. The bottom of the bowl is probably coated with oil, making the layer of the rice touching the bowl golden brown and crispy. The server was nice to prepare the dish for me, adding dark soy sauce to it and mixing it well for my consumption. She also explained a little the difference between this and claypot rice is the rice would get burnt so easily yet making the rice crispy and hot. Lup Cheong, minced meat slices and xiao bai chai makes up the dish. i wish there was a little more meat though for a $10 set i paid for. But indeed the rice was crispy yet not burnt, i guess its about the temperature and flame control that made it possible. One thing to mention is the belacan chilli went very well with the rice and they are quite "conservative" for the quantity served so just ask for more smile. Dessert was just a small soya beancurd, the lao ban toufu type, pretty average. Total bill $10.35 including the 50cents wet tissue. Hope to return next time to try the rice with their soup. if they could produce good quality tasty soup, it would be a pretty good combination.

But the dining experience can further be enhanced with more messaging either on the menu or the wall about the history behind this fusion styled cuisine, or maybe even showing in-house dishes recommendation on the TV.

i strongly feel for $4.50, this kway chup dish is probably one of the best value in money. In this semi restaurant style located under hdb flat, Teochew Cuisine Restaurant has since established itself as a popular dining place, especially for supper. My kway chup dish comes with duck meat, big intestines, bean-curd and some peanuts. Its not always about the quantity, the quality justifies its $4.50 price tag. With the kway cooked nicely, the slightly salty soup just opens up your appetite to finish up all the ingredients. The accompany 3 sauces also allow you to explore the different taste combination, vinegar sauce, chilli, and bean paste sauce. Anyway the fish soup and porridge is popular orders here as well. This place recently upgraded to electonic parking, so you just park and eat in peace, no more running after summon aunties smile
