Cheap Japanese Buffet Smile Aug 07, 2011
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi | Buffet | Kids-Friendly

My boyfriend and I went to Somerset where we decided to try out probably the cheapest Japanese Buffet in Singapore.
Tarafuku is located at the basement of 313@Somerset and the lunch buffet costs only about $17.60++ an adult. That's very cheap if you compare it to the other Japanese buffets in Singapore.

We went in and to our surprise, it was packed. So we ended up having to wait for about 20 minutes before there was a table for us.

Once we got in, we took a quick scan around the buffet spread. And when I say 'quick', it's not because we wanted to rush to the eating, but rather because the spread was very limited.

I guess we should've prepared ourselves for that, especially for the price we paid.

There was sushi, sashimi, chawanmushi, miso soup, ramen, udon, variety of salads, deep fried chicken wings, potato wedges, deep fried taro sticks, shishamo, fried mackerel, fried rice, porridge, tempura, pasta, vegetables topped with melted cheese, fried chicken cutlet, fresh fruits, ice cream, desserts, coffee, etc.

The quality of the food met my expectations, once again, considering the very low price of the buffet. However, I won't raise your expectations either by saying it was superb. Tarafuku is very much like Sakura, except you get less variety with the dollars saved.

Don't Walk Past, Walk In Smile Aug 06, 2011

Categories : Hainanese | Restaurant | Chicken Rice

I, together with my boyfriend and his parents went to the famous Pow Sing Restaurant at Serangoon Gardens. As usual, there was a long queue outside, so we waited.

We ordered their Nonya Fish Head Curry. Tasted really goood… but being a true blue bibik ( I come from a Peranakan family), I personally felt it should have been better.
After all, this is a food business and it is only natural for me to expect more from it. My mum’s Fish Head curry could easily win this hands-down.

Even my boyfriend didn’t quite like it. He took nothing more than a few small bits of the fish cos the taste was too strong for his liking. *?* Beats me too.

How can you call yourself a Singaporean when you don’t like fish head curry? Haha. But it meant more for the rest of us!

We also had the Sambal Cuttlefish Kang Kong. Taste wise, not bad. But what I really loved about this dish was the cuttlefish. It was melt-in-your-mouth smooth and soft.

And we ordered one spicy otah for each of us. Perhaps one of the best otahs I’ve tasted. Really good.

Those who’ve visited this restaurant would already know that the steamed chicken here is a popular favourite. Quite honestly though, it wasn’t meeting my expectations that evening. It's supposed to be good, but turned out not to be as tender and tasty as expected.

I would recommend this place for dinner. Just remember to come early!

You Won't Go Wrong with Saizeriya Smile Aug 05, 2011

Went to have lunch at Saizeriya with my boyfriend a couple of weeks ago. It was our 5th time visiting this Italian casual dining restaurant. It's quite hidden away in Liang Court and it's a pity I only learnt of it recently.

For such a convenient and central location, I honestly think that the food there is absolutely affordable and undeniably worth the price you pay.

They have everything from salads, soups, pastas, steaks and believe it or not, escargots!!

Almost everything on the menu is below $10.

From all our past visits, including this one, we have found that the quality and portions of their food are consistently good and completely worth it.
Top up $2.80 with your food and you'll get to enjoy free flow of drinks that include milo, iced lemon tea, hot coffee, soft drinks, etc.

Pretty cool huh? tongue

You guys should really try it out if you haven't already done so!

P.s. Sorry, I have many more pics of the other pages in their menu but OpenRice allows only a maximum of 8 pictures. sad

The Famous Tian Tian Chicken Rice Smile Jun 01, 2011
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chicken Rice

Was in search of a place for lunch after a game of tennis. The bus my boyfriend and I were taking passed by this row of shophouses along Simpang Bedok at Jalan Pari Burong. When I saw the bright blue signboard, it immediately caught my attention.

I was in disbelief at first. Could it really be the same Tien Tien as our favorite Tien Tien Hainanese Chicken Rice stall from Maxwell Food Centre? The signboard looked exactly alike!

We alighted at the bus stop just opposite the row of shophouses and headed to check it out.

The famous restaurant was humbly nestled along the skirts of this peaceful housing estate. The ambience is perfect for one of those lazy, laid-back weekend lunches.

We ordered the white steamed chicken with a side of chicken gizzards and a plate of beansprouts.

The chicken, as usual, was tender and very flavorful. The meat was soft and juicy and the chicken skin was melt-in-your-mouth.

The rice did not meet the usual Maxwell Food Centre standard. The texture was nothing impressive and taste wise, it proved a disappointment. My first mouthful and I turned to my boyfriend saying, "it tastes like the chicken rice I cook at home." I expected more from them.

The beansprouts tasted pretty good. However, I would have enjoyed it more if it weren't so oily. I felt it was a tad bit too oily for my liking. But other than that, it was soft yet slightly crunchy and i enjoyed it smile

Long Queue But Worth The Wait Smile Mar 31, 2011

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Food Court | Noodles

It is impossible to keep count of the number of times i've eaten at Food Opera's 3rd Generation stall. And being their oh-so-loyal customer, i have to warn you that there is always a queue at this stall. Well, unless of course you're one of those who have your meals at weird hours of the day.

I always come here for the Laksa. Tell myself constantly that i need to try something new but most of the time, i give in to temptation.

The Laksa is so irresistible. The gravy is deliciously lemak, with the right balance of coconut milk, spiciness and prawn stock. Taste awesome, really!

I know they preach about calories and fat in the gravy, but i'm telling you to forget about all that - just for one day. lol

The thick beehoon is pretty al dante (is it legal to use this word for chinese noodles?). I have though, on one unfortunate occasion, experienced eating noodles from this stall that was definitely not boiled long enough. I was disgusted at the texture because it just tasted so bad. So remember to check before you leave the counter.

The portion of cockles is okay for me. But the portion of prawns is very much desired. Why so stingy?? Fishcake and bean sprouts are okay too.

For that $5, i think it's really worth the try!
