Juiciest Burgers In Town? Smile Jan 20, 2013

Make Your Own Burger

Make Your Own Burger

When the Fatboy's chain started a few years ago, they were quite well-known for making one of the juiciest burgers in town. What's even more interesting about their concept is that you even get to "Build Your Own Burger" and choose whatever toppings, bread and add-ons that you want. I was there for a food tasting with the OpenRice team and had a really fun time making my own patty. Bernie (the founder), brought out 2 huge metal bowls of meat and showed us how to make our own burger patty. We then got some hands-on experience making our own patties. OVerall, their burgers are pretty awesome and they even serve up some boozy drinks to go with your burger!

Chicken Soup For the Soul Smile Jan 20, 2013

Chicken Soup Ramen

Chicken Soup Ramen

On cold and rainy days, the best place to have some comforting Chicken Soup is at Imperial Treasure. They have few outlets but I usually visit the one at ION. Their Chicken Soup La Mian ($8) comes in a small soup bowl with a separate bowl for the ramen. You can tell from the golden, clear soup that it has been brewing for quite some time to bring out the deep essence of the chicken. The chicken meat was also very tender and just melted off the bones. The soup was clear and very comforting, especially on a cold day. I don't take much starch, but their handmade ramen is not too bad either. I will usually take a spoon of ramen and soak it in the soup before eating it. Try it the next time you're there! The service staff is made up of exceptionally friendly aunties and one of them even offered me a glass of warm water when they heard me coughing (I had a bad cough that day).

Blueberry Muffin

Blueberry Muffin

I visit this branch everyday because the staff here are really friendly and put in an effort to remember my regular order. I usually don't have breakfast at Starbucks but decided to grab a Blueberry Muffin today. What I like about their Blueberry Muffin is that it smells absolutley gorgeous! Especially after you heat it up, the entire room will be filled with the sweet smell of Blueberries in the morning and it's a rather refreshing way to start your day. Of course, I also had my usual Venti Dark Mocha Frappuccino which is one of the most awesome beverages at Starbucks! =P

Korean BBQ

Korean BBQ

I've had Korean BBQ when I visit Seoul and Busan, but never really had the chance to try a Korean BBQ restaurant in Singapore before. Tucked away in Tanjong Pagar is this cozy restaurant not too far away from the MRT. We tried the Galbisal (beef short rib), Ohgyeopsal (pork belly) and Chadolbaegi (thin sliced beef brisket). The meats were grilled over an infra-red BBQ unit that produced very little smoke and kept the restaurant relatively smoke-free.
Magic Cup

Magic Cup

We also had some Korean Rice Beer that was served in unique tin cups that kept the drink chilled even after leaving it on the table for 30 - 40 minutes. The boss explained that he had these "magic cups" specially flown in from Korea and that you wouldn't be able to find a similar cup anywhere in Singapore! It was a great evening spent with good company, over GREAT FOOD and the drinks were awesome too!

Makan Hunt @ Shi Wei Tian Smile Nov 11, 2012

Tucked away in a cosy shophouse along Joo Chiat Place, 食唯天 Shi We Tian is one of the many restaurants you will find along that lively street. But one of the distinct features that sets it apart from the rest is an alfresco dining area that transforms into a cool hangout place for you and your soccer buddies to kick back and watch a match over some beer. The crowd that you will find here are mainly residents who live around the area and regular customers who frequent the restaurant for family gatherings.

As you step into 食唯天 the first thing that catches your attention is the huge collection of antiques - an old sewing machine that my grandmother used to have sits beside a 19th-century vintage gramaphone. And as you venture deeper into the restaurant you'll find lots of old posters, paintings and even more antique items used to decorate the interior. Like taking a stroll through time, the decor of the place is very reminiscent of colonial Singapore.
HK Noodles, Drunken Chicken Ginseng Soup, Chao Ta Bee Hoon

HK Noodles, Drunken Chicken Ginseng Soup, Chao Ta Bee Hoon

As you would imagine, the food served here is based on the heritage recipes that were passed down from the owner's grandmother, giving it a very homely and unique flavour. The Drunken Chicken Ginseng Soup was one of the dishes we had and the soup base was sweet with a rather strong ginseng taste to it. I rather enjoyed the soup since I had not eaten ginseng chicken in a long time, but it pales in comparison to the ginseng chicken soup that you get in Korea.

One of the more unique dishes that they served, and also a favourite of mine, is their Golden Pumpkin which is basically slices of pumpkin coated with salted egg yolk and fried in a light batter. The combination of the salted egg yolk and pumpkin leaves a very refreshing taste, and you can't help but want to eat more of it.
Salted Egg Crab

Salted Egg Crab

To end off the feast was a magnificent Salted Egg Crab! You can tell just by looking at the size of that pincer that the crab is full of juicy, succulent meat. I'm not much of a crab lover, mainly because most of the crab dishes are spicy (Chilli Crabs, Black Pepper Crabs, etc.) and I'm one of the few Singaporeans who don't take spicy foods. Anyway, I took a smaller piece of the crab and while I had a difficult time prying open the shell (another reason I don't like eating crabs), the salted egg sauce was fantastic and probably very sinful. The thick yellow sauce was glistening under the light and its texture was velvety smooth probably because of the butter base. I completed my meal with a piping hot mun-tou (fried bun) dipped into that thick, creamy sauce.
Candy Floss Machine

Candy Floss Machine

They even have a candy floss machine and will make one for you on request. It's one of those childhood snacks that you used to buy from the "pasar malam" (flea market) and you don't see many of these around very often nowadays. Having candy floss definitely adds to the whole nostalgic feel of the restaurant and the kids definitely love it too! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at 食唯天 and will drop by again if I'm ever in the area.
